Chapter 24: I Wish This Moment Could Last Forever
As we let the crowd carry us deeper into the park, past tempting carts selling popcorn and churros, we finally arrived at the entrance of our chosen attraction.
The wait time was already 40 minutes, and even more people were lining up behind us.
“Good thing we didn’t stop to get popcorn first.” “Yeah, if we had, we’d probably be waiting even longer now.”
Though I wanted a bit more time to mentally prepare for the thrill ride, the sparkle in Kana’s eyes made it impossible to say no. So, I quietly got in line beside her.
While Kana buzzed with excitement, I glanced up at the massive structure towering before us.
“…Wait, is this safe? I’m not gonna die, right?” I could feel my legs trembling like a newborn fawn.
Logically, I knew this ride was designed to be safe; otherwise, they wouldn’t be operating it. But I couldn’t fathom how people actually enjoyed something like this.
Kana, standing beside me, was no exception. How could she be so excited with screams echoing all around us? Those sounds only fueled my fear.
“You’re not gonna die, so relax. Just make sure you don’t forget our memories, alright?”
“…Sorry for being such a wimpy boyfriend.” While other couples around us featured boyfriends soothing their nervous girlfriends, we were the complete opposite. It was a little humiliating.
“That’s one of the things I love about you.” “And I love that you accept me for who I am, Kana.”
“… …” “… …” “…This feels kinda weird, huh?” “Yeah, we’re not used to saying stuff like this.”
We hardly ever get to act lovey-dovey without worrying about prying eyes. Whether it’s classmates or Kana’s sister, Mizuse, and Samidare constantly interrupting us, we rarely get a moment alone.
Even when we’re at home together, we don’t get much time to ourselves. So, moments like these still feel unfamiliar.
How do other couples casually toss around “I love you” or “You’re the best” so easily? Part of me admires them, but I also don’t want to lose the specialness of these words by overusing them.
“It’s nice to be alone together like this. I don’t have to worry about anything.”
Trying to shake off her embarrassment, Kana changed the subject. “No one’s butting in, no teasing… It feels like we’re just a normal couple enjoying our time.”
“It’s fun having Minase and Samidare around, but it’s moments like these, when I can stick close to you, that I really treasure.”
“Every time we even start flirting, Minase immediately teases us, and my face goes bright red.” “You’re not the only one who blushes, Kana. But, for the record, Minase isn’t the reason my face turns red.”
“Then what is?” “It’s because you’re so cute.” “…W-well, I think you’re… um, handsome, too.”
Our eyes met. Kana’s big, round eyes held my gaze as if she were daring me to look away.
In those few seconds, our faces began to heat up in unison, turning increasingly red.
Is waiting in line always this much fun?
For a moment, I wished this time could stretch on forever—a private world for just the two of us, free from interruptions.
…Though, if I’m honest, a part of me also wished the line would never end because I didn’t want to ride this thing.
Still, I was grateful no one we knew was here to witness this embarrassing exchange. If someone spotted us and teased us later, I might actually want to vanish on the spot.
Hopefully, there’s no one with a telescope watching from afar, right?
Nah, that’d be impossible. This theme park is packed; finding someone you know here is like spotting a needle in a haystack.
But if we did run into someone we knew by chance, I’m not sure I’d survive the mortification.
