Chapter 23: I’ll Hold Your Hand the Whole Time
“It’s as crowded as ever.” “It always feels packed, whether it’s a weekday or a weekend.”
“Wish we could’ve come on a quieter day.” “For high schoolers, coming here on a weekday is pretty rare. Just gotta suck it up.”
Kana tried to cheer me up as I grumbled about the crowd.
Having such an upbeat girlfriend is a lifesaver at times like these. Her energy is infectious, and before I know it, I start to feel more positive too.
If I’d come here with friends instead, I’d probably be whining nonstop about the sheer number of people. By the time we’d lined up for a few attractions, my mood would have soured entirely, and this “dreamland” would’ve turned into a “nightmare land.”
“Alright! What should we go on first?” I slapped my cheeks with both hands to shake off the gloom and refocus on the date.
We were here to escape the monotony of daily life and have fun together, so I resolved to throw myself into the moment.
“I wanna ride that one!” Seeing the shift in my mood, Kana lit up with excitement and eagerly pointed toward an attraction.
Yes, this is how a date should be. “…Wait, don’t start at full throttle!”
Kana had chosen the park’s most towering and eye-catching ride. Even from here, I could faintly hear the screams of people who had already boarded.
“We’re here to forget our troubles and have fun!” “If I ride that, I might forget the last two weeks entirely…”
“Oh, right. You’re bad with thrill rides, huh? Slipped my mind.”
About six months ago, Kana and I had gone to an amusement park with four other classmates. On that day, I’d ridden a roller coaster and ended up looking ghostly pale while everyone else had a blast.
It’s not the speed that scares me—it’s that heart-in-your-throat sensation. This particular ride, though, takes things to the next level, plunging from a height equivalent to a nine-story building multiple times. It’s like a roller coaster, but more intense.
I just can’t handle that feeling of having the air knocked out of me.
Honestly, I’d be fine with something a bit more low-key, but…
“Don’t worry. I’ll hold your hand the whole time,” Kana said, looking up at me with those big, trusting eyes.
Well, now I couldn’t exactly refuse. Ideally, it’s the boyfriend’s role to reassure the girlfriend in situations like these, to show off how cool he is. Unfortunately, I’m the one who’s terrible at thrill rides, flipping the roles entirely.
“Just… don’t make me forget the last two weeks, okay?”
“I’ll do my best.” “No, you have to promise! If you lose those memories, you’ll forget we started dating!”
Kana clung to my sleeve as she said this, her grip tightening. What is this adorable creature?
The sweet, vulnerable side of Kana that she only shows when we’re alone is ridiculously cute. Yep, I love her. I love her so much.
I felt an overwhelming urge to pull her into a hug right then and there, but the thought of doing that in public embarrassed me too much, so I held back.
