- Chapter 44 - Errand Boy?
Day 2 of the cultural festival, inside the classroom. There is nothing fresh about the continuation from yesterday, the novelty is lacking as the classroom has transformed into a maid café.
However, even on the second day, there’s something captivating about the girls in their maid outfits.
Naturally, my eyes were following Yuki’s figure as she moved around, but today, she was in her student council uniform with an armband since she was on patrol.
Seeing her in the long-skirted maid outfit was something I wanted to witness, so I felt a tinge of disappointment from the depths of my heart.
“Morigami-kun…”
As I observed Yuki, an unfamiliar male voice reached my ears, and it made me uneasy. I worried if they had noticed that I was staring at Yuki for too long. Turning around hesitantly, I noticed that it was Fujiwara and Tsujiuchi, classmates from my own class, who called out to me.
“Is it really okay for you today?”
The subject of their sentence wasn’t clear at first, but I quickly realized they were talking about my shift at the café during the cultural festival.
It wasn’t that they had figured out I was watching Yuki; it was more of a relief. I answered them while exhaling a sigh of relief.
“Of course. In fact, it’s only natural. I was the one who asked to switch for the day.”
“That’s true, but weren’t your old friends here yesterday? It’s only natural to prioritize them.”
“That’s right. Friends are important. It’s not like he’s skipping for some weird reason, and since Morigami-kun told us the reason already, there’s no need for him to work full-time.”
I hadn’t really talked much with my classmates. I was always focused on baseball and maybe played the tragic heroine by building walls around myself, not knowing how to make friends or how to interact with others. But now, after I had talked openly with Yuki yesterday, those walls were gone. Maybe it was because of the atmosphere of the cultural festival, but they were speaking kindly to me. It could be just an easygoing conversation to them, but I felt that they genuinely meant it.
That’s why I shook my head.
“Thank you, but it’s a promise, so today, Shogo and I will work the full shift.”
I casually included Shogo in my response as well. Well, considering he had been playing around all day yesterday, it was only natural for him to work.
“Oh, I see. If Morigami-kun says so.”
“Sure, let us know if you run into any trouble.”
“By the way, we don’t have Morigami-kun’s contact, do we?”
“Ah, right.”
As they said that, they took out their smartphones from their pockets.
“Let’s exchange numbers.”
“Yeah, we’re classmates after all.”
It was the first time. Not even in elementary school or middle school had I exchanged contact numbers with anyone other than Shogo and Yoshiki. I suppose that’s the magic of the cultural festival. Of course, I know it’s not a big deal to become friends or anything. Maybe it’s just for situations when the maid café gets busy and they need extra hands. I understand that.
Even so, when my classmates asked to exchange numbers, I honestly felt happy.

The second day of the cultural festival began. Today’s starting point is Year 2 Class F, right from the kitchen of the maid café. The menu is simple, just omelets and coffee, so anyone can do it… right?
Or so I thought…
“Whoa!”
In the kitchen, as I tried to crack an egg into a bowl, the egg broke just from being held.
Until now, I had never cracked an egg before. This is my first time attempting it…
“Whoa!”
Another egg broke just from being held in my hand.
“Haha, look at Morigami! The golden warrior from some far-off land!”
“Haha! I remember that! The one who becomes a golden warrior and trains with eggs to control their power.”
The classmates started teasing me after witnessing the scene.
“Sorry, really sorry.”
“It’s totally fine. See, you do it like this.”
One of my classmates, Hirose, who was wearing glasses, gently showed me how to crack an egg.
He cracked the egg with only one hand to demonstrate.
“See, it’s easy.”
“Like… this?”
But, the egg broke the moment I tried to hold it.
“Hahaha! Morigami’s grip is like a gorilla’s!”
Others also laughed at the classmate’s joke.
“Hey, hey, Akira. Let me show you how to do it properly.”
Suddenly, Shogo stepped in and grabbed an egg. Just like me, the egg broke the moment he held it, but he managed to put it in the bowl with brute force.
“Whoa!”
And then, still full of energy, he cracked the whole egg, shell and all, with his hand.
“Wait! If you push with enough force, the shell disappears, see?”
“Konoe-kun… This is a bit…”
“Whoa! This is Konoe’s egg breaking special trick!”
“It’s already lunchtime. So it’s not a bad idea.”
I don’t think that’s how it’s supposed to be done.

Unfortunately, the ones in charge of running the café saw my poor egg-cracking skills and asked me to leave.
In the past, there was a popular fully automatic egg-cracking machine on a Sunday anime show that went viral on the internet, but I couldn’t make fun of it. I want to buy one from a store right now…
Regaining my composure, we headed to the frying pan team. Our task was to cook eggs and make chicken rice.
“We can’t even crack eggs properly, and you expect us to handle frying pans?”
“When it comes to handling things, it’s my job as the former Number 5 First Baseman.”
“Can you, the typical pull hitter, handle a frying pan?”
Amidst the banter, we poured the beaten eggs into the frying pan.
“Huh? Oh? Ohhh!?”
Wait, isn’t this turning out somewhat decent? Could it be that I have a talent for cooking?
But my excitement was short-lived. When I tried to make an omelet, it turned into a messy scramble instead.
“Ah… hahaha…”
Even my male classmates could only show us wry smiles of sympathy.
“Here it goes!”
Shogo swung the frying pan with his own sound effects. The egg launched into the air with a sharp swing, only to land directly on Masato’s face.
“Whoa! Hot, hot!”
With a scalding egg mask on his face, Shogo writhed in pain, then proceeded to eat the eggs that fell on his face like a vacuum cleaner.
“Whoa! Hot! Freshly made eggs taste great!”
“…..”
The scene was filled with awkward laughter after the weird display.

Well… in short every single thing we tried was a huge blunder.
If we were to work on a real café, then they would have fired us on the very first day due to our amateurish skills
So, that’s how most of our day passed by. Shogo and I could only play the roles of errand boys, disguised as shopping trips.
However, being former athletes, we finished the errands swiftly with agile moves, one after another. Though our performance was praised, it was no more than a complement of a kindergartener managing to do some shopping.
**Gulp! — Gulp!** [SFX for Drinking sound]
Shogo chugged his glass of juice as if it were alcohol, trying to show a sense of accomplishment.
“Wow, that looks satisfying. You really enjoy your drinks.”
“What are you talking about? Our contributions are significant.”
“Can you really call being errand boys a contribution?” I sighed, lamenting our behind-the-scenes roles.
Now, with no additional errands to run, we were waiting in the corner of the kitchen. If there were any additional eggs or coffee to buy, we’d dash for it. But it seems like we’ve surpassed peak hours.
“You two,” Hirose spoke up as he approached us. He smiled kindly even at the likes of us.
“Peak hours are over now, so take a break, okay? You don’t need to work until the end,” he said.
“Are you sure? What about additional errands?”
“Nah, it’s fine. Thanks to you two, it was a big help. Maybe you even became the top sales contributors. It’s all thanks to your speedy errands. Thank you so much.”
And indeed, there’s no need for us to be around if there are no errands left, and we’d probably just get in the way, not knowing how to handle a frying pan or eggs properly.
“In that case, we’ll take you up on your offer.”
“Yeah, we appreciate it.”
“Yes, thank you very much,” we said in gratitude to him.
Acknowledging his gratitude, we left the kitchen.
In the hallway, I noticed that the cultural festival was nearing its end. Shogo, who also noticed that, asked me about what we should do next.
“What else do you want to do?”
“Well, we pretty much conquered the cultural festival yesterday.”
Indeed, yesterday we made the most of the cultural festival.
Well, we didn’t visit the couple-oriented places like fortune-telling booths and haunted houses.
Haunted houses were out of the question for Shogo; it turns out he’s surprisingly afraid of ghosts.
We’ve already seen the performances at the gymnasium, both from the sports clubs and cultural clubs, so honestly, there’s nothing left for us to regret.
“I’ll just hang around in the gymnasium for a while. How about you, Shogo?”
“Ah, well, I haven’t eaten much, so I’ll go around trying different foods,” he replied.
“Okay then, shall we split up for a while?”
“Sounds good. We spent all of yesterday together, after all. A little time apart won’t hurt. I’ll let you know if I get lonely.”
“You better be honest about it and come find me at time.”
“I’m an honest guy, you know. See you later.”
With a smile, Shogo waved his hand and walked down the hallway.
Now then, I’ll just leisurely pass the time in the gymnasium…
“At last, I found you.”
“Huh…?”
Suddenly, a familiar voice reached my ears, and before I knew it, my left hand was grabbed, and I noticed that I was being pulled forward.
“Wait, huh?”
When I looked ahead, I saw a silver-haired girl in a long maid outfit, leading me into the maze-like structure as she held my hand and ran down the hallway.
