- Chapter 36 - On the Veranda
“Piron.” [TL/N : SFX for Notification]
After taking a bath and roughly drying my hair with a bath towel, I returned to my room and heard that sound. It seemed like I accidentally turned off the silent mode on my smartphone. Perhaps it was when I took it out or put it back into my pocket that the silent mode got disabled.
I picked up my smartphone and sat on the bed, switching it back to silent mode.
Judging from the sound, it was a LOIN notification. If someone had sent me a message at this hour, it would probably be Shogo.
As I checked the screen of my smartphone, it turned out my assumption was both right and wrong.
Shogo had created a group and already invited me in, and the message was sent by Yoshiki.
“Tomorrow, right? What time should I reach there?”
Just as I was about to reply to Yoshiki’s message, Shogo sent a message first.
“Akira. What time would be best?”
That’s just like Shogo. While those of us from our group could just attend school as usual, the people coming from outside haven’t been informed about what time they could enter the school grounds.
I tried to recall the teacher’s explanation as I looked at my smartphone… My smartphone…
“What time was it again…?”
Certainly, Nekoshiba-sensei had said that outsiders could come from a certain hour, and had also asked us to inform them about the ones we will be inviting for the cultural festival. There is no mistake about that. However, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t remember the specific time.
“I shouldn’t have relied on Shogo for this.”
Disappointed in myself, I tried to remember Nekoshiba-sensei’s words. I stood up and wandered around the room, trying to retrieve the memory from my brain, but it overheated, and I gave up thinking.
However, if I didn’t tell Yoshiki the time, he would be in trouble. With that in mind, I went out to the balcony to cool my head for a moment.
The November night was filled with a chilling breeze. My overheated head quickly switched to cooling mode. Perhaps it had gotten too cold. But even after cooling my head, Nekoshiba-sensei’s words didn’t come back to me.
Suddenly, my eyes caught the words written on the thin wall of the balcony: “Break here in case of emergency.” Next to it was Yuki Ohira’s room. She would probably know at what time outsiders could enter. As it was an emergency situation for me, should I break this and ask Yuki about the time?
[TL/N : Lmao]
That would be too foolish of me. I mean, I could just go out through the front door and pay her a visit like a normal person. If I broke this, it wouldn’t end up as a funny story.
“Oi! Yuki-chan! If you’re there, answer me!”
Humans are lazy creatures, so even though it would only take a few seconds to walk there, I held onto the possibility that if I called her from the balcony, she might come out.
Of course, things wouldn’t go so conveniently, so I ended up calling in a strange voice and also used some strange words…
“Don’t make those strange sounds and call out to me at night!”
“Whoa!”
Peeking slightly out of the thin wall, a silver-haired beautiful girl appeared and glared at me cutely, which surprised me.
“W-What are you doing?”
“I’m collecting the laundry…”
Ah, well, that’s a normal reason.
“Well, ‘What are you doing?’ should be my line. What’s with that weird voice and strange way of calling me out? It’s embarrassing, you know.”
“I’m really sorry about that.”
Apologizing, I also took on the same appearance as her.
“Do you need something?”
“Oh, well, it’s about tomorrow’s cultural festival…”
“Cultural festival?”
Perhaps she suspected something and gave me a sharp look.
“Are you trying to invite me too?”
Her voice sounded somewhat delicate, causing me to smile wryly. It was because of what happened earlier today. A large number of boys had appeared before Yuki Ohira earlier, and every single one of them asked her, “Please accompany me around the cultural festival.” Yuki Ohira ruthlessly turned them all down, saying, “I’m sorry.” It could be expected that the members of the student council would be busy on that important day.
“That must have been tough.”
I said with a laugh, and she made a slightly angry expression.
“Don’t think it’s someone else’s problem. It’s not a laughing matter. Even the one refusing feels mentally drained.”
“Yeah, I know. Refusing is tough. And yet, even knowing that Yuki will be busy with the student council on the day of the cultural festival, they still invite you out.”
“Y-yes. The student council is busy with patrols and such.”
As she said that, she murmured softly while lightly playing with her hair.
“But, um, just for a little bit, maybe? I do have some free time…”
“Are you planning to go with someone?”
When I asked, she responded with a slightly sulky face and pouted adorable before speaking.
“Well, I don’t have any plans, though.”
“I see. If Yuki had time, I wanted to treat you, as a gesture of gratitude for everything.”
“Huh…”
Yuki’s face brightened a little at the words that naturally came out from my mouth.
“My middle school friends are coming. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen each other, so they take the first priority.”
“Oh, right. You mentioned that earlier.”
“Yeah. So, the gesture of gratitude can wait for another occasion.”
“It’s important to prioritize long-time friends. I understand.”
Yuki, who seemed to be trying to convince herself, once again threw a question at me.
“We’ve deviated from the topic. What about tomorrow’s cultural festival?”
“Oh, right, right. I wanted to ask about when external visitors are allowed to enter.”
“I see. You need to know because your friends are coming. I believe it’s from 10 o’clock, if I remember correctly.”
“Oh, I see. As expected of the student council president.”
She had all the plans firmly stored in her mind.
“Is that all you needed?”
“Yeah, thanks.”
I thought of telling Yoshiki right away as I got to know about the timings, I turned around and said, “Alright… sorry for bothering you,” and started to go back to my room…
“Wait, please.”
“Hmm?”
Suddenly being stopped by her, I felt a sense of doubt.
Yuki, who had been staring at my face, had a somewhat uneasy expression.
“Are you good friends with that person?”
“Well, yeah.”
“I see… Then why…”
She muttered some words under her breath, but her voice was so faint, like a mosquito’s buzz, that it didn’t reach me through the November night breeze.
“Oh, sorry. That was a strange question. Please let your friend know quickly.”
“Ah, thanks. I appreciate it.”
Thanking her once again, I returned to my room.
As I replied to Yoshiki’s message, I quickly received a reply saying, “Understood. Thanks.”
Thinking that there was no need for a response from me to that reply, I placed my smartphone on the bed and lay down as if abandoned.
“I wonder what Yuki wanted to say?”
When Yuki looked at me for the last time, she seemed to have a sense of unease, but what she wanted to say remained a mystery.
