- Chapter 29 - The past that defines us
At the entrance, Yuki Ohira rushed and hugged my mother without any concern for her own appearance, and I was so surprised that I couldn’t react. It seemed my mother was also taken aback as she froze for a moment. However, she quickly regained her composure and gave her a loving expression, placing her hand on Ohira’s head and stroking it gently.
It was the same gentle expression that my mother had when she used to soothe me in the past. Ohira looked like a relaxed kitten being petted by my mother. It looked like an emotional reunion between a mother and child.
“Long time no see, Yuki-chan.”
I felt out of place, like I was not supposed to belong there. I couldn’t tell if it was jealousy or something else, but I decided to speak up and asked them to explain their relationship.
“In any case, could you explain the relationship between the two of you?”
Upon my request, Ohira suddenly moved away from my mother.
“I-I’m sorry. I just…” Ohira stuttered.
“It’s okay. I’m glad I can enjoy Yuki-chan’s grown body. Would you like to do it again?” My mother replied, spreading her arms open with her maternal instincts fully activated. Yuki Ohira blushed and shook her head, probably because I was still present in the hallway. If I wasn’t there, Ohira would have jumped right there without any concern.

After the touching reunion, my mother led us to the living room, and the three of us gathered around the kotatsu table. Ohira was sitting opposite to us, and me and my mother sat beside each other. While thinking hard about the current situation, I asked my mother about their relationship.
“So… What is the relationship between the two of you?”
“She’s the daughter of my boss from my part-time job.”
“Even if you say that…”
Surprisingly, Ohira provided more details about this matter in hand. “She used to work as a part-time housekeeper for my family until I finished elementary school.”
“Oh, I see,” I replied, finally understanding what was going on.
“I really enjoyed working there. The pay was good, and taking care of Yuki-chan was like raising my own daughter. Now, she’s a beautiful high school girl,” my mother said with a smile as she stroked Yuki’s head again.
“Misaki-san…”
Ohira’s eyes glistened with joy as my mother was stroking her head again and she purred like a kitten.
“I wanted to keep taking care of Yuki-chan, but when you entered junior high, I had to quit doing that job, as at first you could easily reach your baseball practice location alone on a bicycle but later it became impossible when the location changed and you were too young to go there alone.”
That was certainly right, at first the practice location was really close to my house, so I had no problems commuting there by bicycle. But later the location shifted to a mountain side, which was too far away for me to go there alone and my mother used to drive me back and forth, for the baseball practice.
“I see… So you were telling the truth when you told me that you are quitting because of your son’s baseball.”
“To be honest, I didn’t want to quit that job. But I also wanted to be able to watch Yuki-chan grow during her junior high school days.”
“Somehow, it feels like I’m the one to blame here for separating both of you.”
Hearing my response, my mother laughed out loud and said, “What, are you jealous?”
“It’s not like that, but…”
“It’s not your fault. Akira was going to the Senior League, so it was a given that you were the top priority. You’re my son, who fought against the world in baseball, and I’m proud of that.”
Saying so, she reached out and ruffled my hair.
“Stop it. It’s kind of embarrassing to be petted by my own mother as a teenage boy.”
“Oh, come on. Whether it’s teenage years or when you were still a kid, Akira will always be my son, so just let me pat you a bit more.”
“I don’t want to be in a situation where my mother in menopause is ruffling my hair.”
Watching the exchange between the mother and son, Ohira Yuki said, “I see,” and looked at me and my mother with a gentle yet sad look.
“At that time, I was lonely when Misaki-san quitted, but in the end, it was really good that you gave priority to your son. You became who you are now because of that. I admired Misaki-san and wanted to become like her. That parting made me stronger. Thank you very much.”
With a refreshing expression, Ohira Yuki said what she wanted to say for a very long time.
My mother’s eyes became moist and she hugged Ohira gently.
“There are circumstances in Yuki-chan’s family that Yuki-chan cannot tell me about. I’m in no position to push you on that, but there’s one thing I can still say now. I’ve taken care of Yuki-chan as if she were my own daughter. I still feel that way. You will always be my daughter, so please tell me anything. Yuki-chan has a bad habit of enduring things. It’s okay to be dependent.”
“Yes…”
It was a touching scene, revealing the bond between the two.
However, my mother broke the scene by stopping the hug and asked both of us which made us freeze on the spot.
“Now… May I ask you a question next?”
“A question?”
“Well, what else can I do but ask a question? It would be weird not to say in this situation.”
With that, my mother said something obvious.
“Why is Yuki-chan at Akira’s house while wearing a maid outfit?”
Both Ohira and I looked at each other and decided to answer my mother’s question honestly.

“Then I’ll leave the lovebirds alone.”
We explained everything, from start to finish.
It looked like my mother was about to collapse from her seat when she heard our reasoning.
My mother seemed to understand our situation and decided not to interfere anymore. We then saw her off to the entrance together.
“Oh, and Akira,” my mother called out to me by name as she put on her shoes in the entrance.
“I understand your situation, and I won’t say anything about it, but there’s one thing I want to say.”
It was about to be the usual warning not to do anything perverted. I already knew that without being told.
“Call Yuki-chan by her name.”
“Huh?”
I let out a strange sound as if she had said something unexpected.
“I want you to call Yuki-chan by her name.”
“Well, isn’t that up to her?”
“No. It’s an absolute requirement. Otherwise, she will remember the harsh past which she had suffered once.”
“Ehh? Is it that serious?”
Seeing my reaction, my mother laughed loudly and opened the door.
“Well, see you later, both of you. Akira, come home to visit once in a while.”
“Sure thing.”
“Goodbye.”
I let out a sigh of relief as I heard my mother’s footsteps heading toward the elevator.
However, she wasn’t joking about calling Yuki Ohira by her name until the very end.
I glanced at Ohira, and saw that she had a wry smile on her face.
“It looks like she remembered it.”
“What do you mean?”
I picked up on the words which she murmured, but she corrected me and said it again.
“I told Misaki-san that I hate my last name, so I wanted her to call me by my first name. I think Misaki-san remembered that and asked you to call me by my given name.”
I see. So that’s why Mom calls her Yuki-chan. Well, even though she said something like “She’s practically my daughter,” she probably would have called her by her first name anyway.
“The only person who calls me by my name is Misaki-san. Nobody else does.”
It seemed true judging from the conversation. Her parents probably don’t call her by her name either, and I’ve never seen anyone around her call her by her first name.
I watched her say this, looking sad and mournful.
“Yuki.”
Surprisingly when I tried saying her name, it came off rather naturally from my mouth.
But as soon as I called her name, I felt somewhat embarrassed and turned my face away.
“Is it okay if I call you by your name from now on?”
When I asked her that, she gave me a bright smile like a sunflower, only for a moment though.
“Yes.”
After giving a short reply, Yuki looked at me and said,
“Akira-kun.”
My heart raced and pounded loudly.
It was too sudden and I had really not expected it. It was the first time a girl had ever called me by my name. Yuki’s cute voice calling my name contained all those meanings. My heart kept beating faster and faster like it was about to burst open any moment.
“But, please don’t call me that at school…”
“Oh, okay.”
It was a strange feeling that made me feel excited and nervous at the same time. A bittersweet, ticklish feeling. But I felt really comfortable.
“I-I’ll go prepare dinner. P-please sit down and wait, Akira-kun.”
“Y-yeah. Thank you, Yuki.”
We continued our conversation, just calling each other by our names, feeling awkward but comfortable at the same time.
The dinner that day tasted somewhat sweet.
