- Chapter 25 - Who made this Bento?
“Wait, Akira.”
As I sat next to Shirakawa Kohaku and exchanged some conversation, Shogo noticed my presence and brought over a dish on a tray.
Looking at Shirakawa Kohaku in front of me, her greeted her and said, “Hey there, Shirakawa-san,” to which she lightly raised her hand in response, “Hello, Konoe-kun.”
“I wasn’t able to find an empty seat, so Shirakawa offered to sit together.”
Although the situation of us sitting together was somewhat understandable, I explained it just in case.
“Thanks, Shirakawa-sam.”
“Oh no, this is a WIN-WIN situation, so it’s okay.”
“WIN-WIN?”
Shogo tilted his head slightly and said, “Well, it doesn’t matter,” and tried to sit next to me without caring.
“Wait a minute.”
“What?”
I could somewhat understand why Shogo would want to sit next to me in this seating arrangement, but I had to stop him.
“Since a while ago, there have been various things said about you and me. If you sit next to me as the final straw, I might not be able to make any more excuses.”
“What are you talking about?”
“It’s about my dignity.”
“Huh?”
Shogo didn’t understand anything. Although his words were also part of the problem, he didn’t seem to care.
“Shirakawa-san, sorry, but is it okay if this guy sits next to you?”
“Huh? Yeah, I’m fine with it.”
Shirakawa-san readily consented. She seemed to be the type who didn’t care whether a man sat next to her or not.
“Hey, Akira. What kind of nonsense are you talking about? You and I are one and the same, right?”
“Don’t say things that are so manly. It’s gross.”
“Isn’t it terrible!?”
Shogo, with his cool eyes welling up with tears, sat next to Shirakawa-san. He probably didn’t realize it, but Shirakawa-san was a cute girl. He should be grateful that he can sit naturally next to her. I shouldn’t say anything that would make the atmosphere awkward though.
Since Shogo came over, I spread out the blue wrapped lunchbox that Ohira gave me this morning.
“By the way, Morigami-kun brought a bento, huh?”
Shogo reacted to Shirakawa’s unexpected voice.
“It’s the first time I’ve seen Akira bring a bento.”
“Oh really? Normally, doesn’t your mother or someone else make it for you?”
“Well… ah…”
Shogo’s words made Shirakawa-san tilt her head.
With a look on his face like he was about to cry, as if he had let something slip, Shogo turned to me. I smiled at him and said, “It’s not like I’m hiding anything, so you can tell me.”
“Sorry! Akira!”
“It’s okay. I’m not really hiding anything.”
Shirakawa-san was repeatedly twisting her neck in confusion over our insider jokes, so I quickly gave her an answer.
“Well, I’m proud to say that I’m living alone.”
“What!? You’re living alone in high school!?” Shirakawa-san exclaimed, wide-eyed. It was undoubtedly quite rare for a high school student to live alone, so it was natural for her to be surprised.
“That’s amazing. You seem so grown up now,” she said, impressed.
She couldn’t help but let out a few words of admiration for me.
“Shirakawa-san, please don’t go around telling anyone else about it.”
“Okay, okay. We’ll keep it a secret just among us,” said Shirakawa-san, who seemed surprisingly easygoing, as if she were a female executive of a secret society.
“This secret will go to the grave. Amen,” she added.
Perhaps she had a similar mindset to Shogo or was simply a bit of a fool.
“But, Konoe-kun, doesn’t it look like a bento made by his girlfriend?” she asked with a mischievous smile, making my heart skip a beat. I didn’t show it on my face, so Shogo didn’t react and instead turned his gaze to Shirakawa-san.
“What do you mean?”
“Well, you’ve been eating at the school cafeteria up until now, right? So, the fact that he suddenly brought a homemade lunch today…”
She gave a sly smile and laughed, while making a cute face.
“Wha… what!?” Shogo stood up and slammed his fist on the table, ignoring the commotion in the cafeteria. The startling sound of his voice caught everyone’s attention, but soon the noise returned to the bustling cafeteria.
“Fufu~ Did you get jealous of his girlfriend?”
“Don’t tease me!” he snapped back, but Shirakawa-san continued to enjoy herself by teasing him.
“We have to congratulate him! It’s a celebration of Akira’s new girlfriend! Um, how much does a wedding dress cost for these kinds of occasions?”
“Calm down, Konoe-kun. Your conversation is leaping all over the place and it’s hard to follow.”
“Oh, right. First, we need to cut the wedding cake,” he said, flustered.
“Why is he in such a hurry?” I wondered, ignoring Shogo’s agitation and opened my lunchbox.
“Why are you so calm, Morigami-kun, when there’s a muscular guy right in front of you who’s shaken up?”
“Maybe because I’m an idiot?”
“Oh, I see.”
Shirakawa-san seems to understand his stupidity because we’re classmates.
“Hey, Akira? Should I wear a necktie or a bow tie when greeting someone?”
“Isn’t a tank top good enough?”
He doesn’t seem to care who he’s greeting, so it’s best to give a random answer.
“Okay. If it’s a tank top, I have three, so I’m relieved.”
That’s quite a specific and realistic number.
“By the way, Shogo, and Shirakawa-san too, I don’t have a girlfriend, so this lunch is made by me.”
Although Shogo seemed to be in a hurry, I explained it to Shirakawa-san because she seemed suspicious.
Due to the contract with Ohira, there was no other option but to say that, so for now, I claimed to have made it.
“Made by Morigami-kun himself, huh?”
Shirakawa-san says with a suggestive tone as she looks inside my lunchbox. She seemed to have something to say, but Shogo spoke first.
“I panicked. I thought Akira got a girlfriend, so I planned to withdraw all my savings to throw a grand party.”
Shogo seemed to believe it without any problem. I should be careful of this guy because he seems overly dramatic.
Shirakawa stopped making any comments on this and looked at both of us with a fond smile.
“You guys are really close, aren’t you?”
“Yeah, we’re more than just friends, we’re practically a very close family.”
“That’s gross… Well, that’s probably how it is.”
“Oh, really?”
Shirakawa-san looked envious as she compared us and said, “It’s nice to have that kind of relationship. I wish I had a best friend like both of you.”
Shirakawa-san answered without any hint of embarrassment to Shogo’s question.
“Maybe there are people I could call friends, but we don’t have the same kind of relationship as the two of us. ‘m really envious.”
During lunch break, her classmates envied her, and although she felt a little embarrassed, she managed to steer the conversation away from the topic of Ohira’s lunch box for the time being.
