- Chapter 11 - Starting from Zero
The apartment I live in is located along the national highway. When we stepped outside, our foot landed on a wide sidewalk and we could see a few cars driving on the road further back.
I walked in the opposite direction of the south where the school is, toward the north.
A large convenience store with a parking lot is located a few seconds walk to the north. It’s my second home where I always go for shopping. It is about 200 meters north from our apartment.
I’m already sweating after walking for only about three minutes, but the moment I stepped into the supermarket, the cool air wrapped around us, making it feel like heaven.
“What do you want to eat?”
Yuki Ohira, who is wearing a patterned T-shirt, didn’t appear to be exhausted at all, as she asked me while picking up a shopping basket near the entrance.
“I’ll carry it.”
Before answering her question, I reached out to take the shopping basket from her.
“It’s okay. You’re my master, so all you have to do is answer my question.”
“Whether I’m your master or not doesn’t matter in this case, after all this is a man’s job.”
I forcefully took the shopping basket from her.
Perhaps she thought that arguing here would be a waste of time, so she quickly let go of the shopping basket.
“Thank you.”
“It’s not a problem.”
After exchanging a few words, we finished the issue of who will carry the shopping basket. Then, I started thinking about the first question she asked while entering the convenience store.
“What do I want to eat…let’s see…”
“I think you already know, but please choose something that can be made from ingredients available in this supermarket.”
“I know.”
“I’m not sure…you seem like you might ask for something outrageous.”
“You’re judging my personality when we’ve just met today.”
“Please fix your shallow personality that is so easy to understand even when we’ve only just talked today.”
This maid is sarcastic. She spits out venom. I don’t feel like I can win a verbal argument with her.
Originally, I didn’t plan to make any strange requests, but I don’t want to know what she would say if I made a really weird request.
On the other hand, being scolded by such a beautiful woman might be worth it?
No, it’s probably better to avoid it since being scolded is definitely not good.
What do I want to eat….. what do I want to eat.
In order to answer her question about what I wanted to eat, I looked around nervously for something to use as a reference.
“Ah!”
“Do you have something in mind?”
“This one.”
I said, and as I tried to put the item into my shopping cart at the supermarket, but, Yuki Ohira grabbed my wrist with a force that could even catch a shoplifter.
“Hey! What are you trying to put in there?”
“Huh? A fried chicken bento box.”
“A fried chicken bento box! We are going to cook something for dinner, not something already prepared!”
I explained to Yuki Ohira, who showed some anger at my behavior.
“Convenience store fried chicken bento boxes are good, but don’t the ones at the supermarket look delicious too?”
“Are you stupid? Are you really that stupid? Why do you think I came with you to the supermarket? It’s for groceries! I said I would make you something homemade! Are pre-made boxed lunches something you categorize as homemade? Yes or no?”
“Well, I guess the staff at the supermarket’s delicatessen makes them, so they are homemade, right?”
“I, the maid, would make them! If it’s between the lunch made by the supermarket employee and the rice made by your dedicated maid, you should choose the dedicated maid! What are you thinking?”
“Come on, it was just a joke.”
Her piercing retort was so sharp that it frightened me, and I put the fried chicken bento back where it belonged. However, the fried chicken bento here looked so delicious that I couldn’t help but pick it up. I’ll come back and buy it next time.
“What is it? Do you really want to eat fried chicken that bad? Should we also make fried chicken for dinner?”
“Nah, I’m not in the mood to eat fried chicken right now.”
“Then, what was that all about just now?”
She put her hand on her forehead and let out a deep sigh.
If I make her any angrier, she might start spewing poison or something.
I decided to stop joking around and seriously thought about what I wanted to eat.
In fact, I usually have convenience store onigiri or cup noodles for lunch, so I honestly have a hard time deciding what to eat. In my mind, lunch is supposed to be easy and simple, unlike dinner. When I was at my parents’ house, all we ever had for lunch was instant ramen, udon, and fried rice.
So, the request for lunch didn’t come up easily.
When I glanced at Yuki Ohira, she looked at me as if to say she couldn’t do anything because I hadn’t made a request. Or maybe it was a little pressure to answer quickly.
But wait a minute, a maid shouldn’t pressure her master like that.
Hmm…? Maid? Maid cafe. Speaking of a typical dish at a maid cafe…
“Omurice?”
“Omurice, is it?”
Yuki Oohira surprisingly gave a response that seemed like she knew what she was talking about.
“Omurice sounds good. It’s my specialty.”
Her specialty is omurice, the classic ideal maid dish. Did she really change jobs?
“Because it’s omurice…”
Yuki Ohira mumbled to herself while recalling the recipe in her head.
“Hmm…”
As if she had remembered something, she hesitantly asked me a question.
“Umm… You have a frying pan, right?”
“No, I don’t.”
“I knew it.”
She had a stunned expression on her beautiful face, but she seemed to have expected that answer.
“Morigami-kun, if you don’t even have a frying pan then you should think that there’s nothing in your house.”
“Well, you cleaned up for me, didn’t you?”
“You’re really a sarcastic person.”
Feeling a bit insulted by her sarcasm, I decided not to fight back and pretended to remember something.
“We have a stove, though. An IH stove.”
[TL/N : IH = Induction Heating]
“The stove that comes with the apartment, right?”
As we live in the same apartment building, it’s only natural to know that the stove is already provided and doesn’t count as an item which I bought.
“Well, that’s fine. It’s actually easier to go shopping when there’s nothing in the house. Starting from scratch will definitely be more fun.”
I can understand that feeling. It’s easier to start from nothing rather than having some things which are needed to do a task.
