Chapter 9 : My Angel Brings Me Good Luck
After finishing our secret conversation, I decided to head home.
Looking up at the sky, I noticed it was getting darker and according to the weather forecast, it was supposed to rain soon.
On my way back, I thought about looking into Linlin’s situation. However, I didn’t want to ruin the good mood I had just managed to recover. Burying the faint guilt in my chest, I decided to forget about it for today.
Then, another notification popped up on my phone. Despite ignoring all the unread messages, Chiya kept reaching out to me persistently.
It’s annoying now, but knowing her personality, it would be even more troublesome if I left her messages on “read.”
That said, if I ignore her and end up meeting her at school tomorrow, it could lead to an equally bothersome situation.
I decided to deal with it later when I had calmed down.
Speaking of which, Miumi should be home by now. I’m pretty late… How should I explain myself?
Also, I wasn’t sure whether I should tell Miumi that she was secretly photographed.
It’s a sensitive topic… Having more people living together inevitably leads to more things to worry about.
I felt bad for Akito, but for Miumi’s sake, it wouldn’t hurt to alert her about the matter. What should I do now…?
“I’m home, Charo.”
“Chao~! Chao~!”
As I stepped inside, Charo, as usual, greeted me at the entrance.
However, Miumi was nowhere to be seen. In fact, I couldn’t hear any sounds from within the house.
“Huh…?”
I wondered if she hadn’t noticed I was back. As I was about to take off my shoes, I felt something off.
The entrance looked the same as always… but then I realized what was strange. There were no shoes other than mine. Miumi’s shoes were gone.
“…!”
In that instant, a chill ran down my spine.
I couldn’t brush it off as her simply being out.
Why? Because I had just realized that Miumi might not be able to get back into the house.
This morning, Miumi had left earlier than I did, saying she had student council duties. And I didn’t remember giving her a house key.
Right now, she had no way to get inside the house.
“…This is bad. Really bad.”
Panic started setting in as I quickly scanned outside from the entrance. I had no idea where she could be.
To make matters worse, I hadn’t exchanged contact information with her.
The sky was getting darker, and the rain was about to begin. I had to find her before it got too late.
“Chao!”
“Sorry, Charo. I know I haven’t fed you yet, but this is more urgent.”
Charo pawed at my feet, crying out, but I couldn’t afford to pay attention right now. The biggest issue was that I didn’t have any way to contact her.
‘Should I report this to the police…? That might be the safest option.’
Damn it. Things had been going wrong nonstop since yesterday. If it weren’t for Akito’s good news, I might have gone mad.
No, this time it’s entirely my fault. It’s because I took a nap yesterday evening instead of dealing with things properly.
If I’d gotten proper sleep, I would have noticed in the morning that Miumi didn’t have a key for the house.
There’s no time to make excuses. I need to contact the police immediately—
“Chao! Chao! Chao!”
“Charo, I know you’re trying to tell me something, but I’m really in a hurry — what is it?”
As I reached for the landline phone, I realized Charo was trying to communicate something.
Charo was a smart cat. After living together for years, I’d learned to understand his gestures.
Time was precious, but I decided to see what Charo was trying to convey.
“You’re saying I should follow you?”
“Chao!”
Following Charo’s lead, I was taken to Miumi’s room. Inside were several unpacked boxes stacked up.
I sighed, thinking how she hadn’t even started organizing her room before helping out in the living room.
Scanning the room, I noticed a white box sticking out from one of the open boxes. Hoping for any clue, I reached for it.
“Chao! Chao!”
I turned at Charo’s cry to see him gracefully climbing the boxes and knocking something down.
When I picked it up, I found it was a B6-size notebook. Flipping through it, I found something that caught my attention.
“Charo, you’re a lifesaver.”
“Chao!”
Inside, I found Miumi’s phone number. Following Charo’s lead had been the right call.
I immediately dialed the number, hoping that the call would connect. I prayed silently and on the third ring, the call went through.
“Hello? Miumi! It’s me — Riku, your cousin. I’m sorry about this morning; I forgot to give you the key—”
“Wait! Please hold on a moment!”
A panicked voice echoed through the phone, and then the call ended abruptly. Well, it made sense. It was strange that I had her phone number, and I’d have to apologize for that later.
At least I’d confirmed she was safe. Just as I was feeling relieved, my phone rang again almost immediately.
I answered in a flash.
“I’m sorry for calling so suddenly. I was just so worried—”
“…Huh? What are you talking about, Riku?”
The voice on the other end was unmistakably Chiya’s.
“Chiya?!”
“Yeah! And why are you ignoring my messages and saying things that don’t make sense?”
“No, um—”
“You’re probably shocked after hearing from Akito about that VTuber girl, right? But did you at least ask about the favor I mentioned?”
“That’s why I need to talk—”
“But before that, don’t you think leaving my messages unread is just plain rude?”
I understand what Chiya is saying.
She’s absolutely right — I’m the one at fault here.
It’s true that I don’t have any excuse for putting off replying to her.
But still—
‘The timing is just way too bad!’
I’ve already confirmed Miumi’s safety, so it’s not the worst possible timing. Even so, right now, I’m waiting for her to call me back so I can hear her side of things.
I know I’m being unfair to Chiya, but I just don’t have the bandwidth for this right now.
“I really am sorry! But for now, forgive me.”
“What exactly are you apologizing for—”
“I promise I’ll get back to you later, but I can’t talk right now. Please, just give me a break… It’s work-related!”
“Huh…? Oh, I see. You’re busy. I’m sorry.”
“Sorry for yelling.”
“No, it’s fine. It can’t be helped, but you better call me later, okay?”
Chiya quickly backed down in response to my desperate attempts to explain.
She’s always been understanding like this, and I’ve appreciated it since forever.
It’s true that this was an urgent situation, so I wasn’t lying.
The moment I hung up, another call came in from a different number. I checked it just to be sure, and this time, it was Miumi’s.
“Hello, I’m sorry about earlier.”
“You don’t need to apologize. More importantly, where are you right now?”
“…I’m still at school. The student council ran longer than usual. I was supposed to finish much earlier, but…”
Oh yeah, she’s in the student council.
Even if it’s by chance, it’s fortunate the meeting dragged on.
I was glad I hadn’t contacted the police yet.
“Sorry. It seems like I was worrying for nothing.”
“Worrying for nothing…?”
“I didn’t give you a spare house key, did I?”
“Now that you mention it…”
“I just got home a little while ago and realized it. I panicked a bit.”
“No, I should have contacted you in advance to avoid this.”
“No, it’s my fault. Don’t worry about it.”
“I even caused trouble for your aunt… I’ll head home soon, so please don’t worry.”
I found her number in a notebook, but it seems she assumed I got it from my mom.
That would’ve been a more straightforward way to do it, but I must’ve been too flustered to think clearly.
“For now, I’ll head over to Nishikiba. Wait for me at the school gate — or better yet, near the school building.”
“Huh? I can go home by myself…”
“You don’t need to pretend. You’re not good with the dark, are you? I noticed back when you insisted we share the same room.”
“…Well, that’s… true.”
“Besides, it’s dangerous for you to be alone at this hour. It’s already started raining, so I’ll bring an umbrella. I’ll call you when I get there.”
“…Thank you.”
She probably didn’t know it had started raining so she agreed without resistance.
As soon as I hung up, I poured some cat food into Charo’s bowl and grabbed a spare umbrella. With that, I dashed out into the rain.
