Chapter 33 : Argument and Conflict
The day after the break.
On a day like today when Miumi doesn’t have student council duties, I took my time eating breakfast before heading to school.
As usual, I struggled with drowsiness in the morning. Since I had plenty of time, I ended up letting my guard down and left for school later than I should.
As I thought, drawing on Sunday night was not a good idea. Lately, I haven’t been drawing as frequently, so I decided to sketch a rough draft before bed. I was worried that my skills might get rusty, so I felt compelled to do it.
Since I ended up going to bed at the same time as Miumi, I’m at least doing much better than usual. But even so… I may have gotten a little greedy. The sleep I cut from the night before is catching up with me now, making my morning sluggish.
Meanwhile, Miumi, who supposedly slept for the same duration, looks completely fine. I guess habits really do shape a person.
Just as I was thinking about this and walked into the classroom, I felt a tense atmosphere. Since the homeroom teacher entered at the same time as I did, the class remained relatively settled, but the atmosphere was clearly different from usual.
“What happened?”
“Just got tangled up in something annoying. Don’t worry about it.”
That was all Akito said when I asked, which only made me more curious. If it was really something troublesome, I’d be better off not getting involved.
I decided to stay quiet until lunchtime. But during class, Chiya kept making eye contact with me as if she wanted to tell me something, which made it clear that this was some real trouble.
When lunchtime arrived, the tense air spread through the classroom again. At the same time, I noticed a guy walking toward us.
“Akimitsu, let’s continue our conversation.”
“I have nothing to talk about with you, Yuto.”
“No, I need a proper explanation. Don’t think you can just walk away from this.”
“About what?”
“You had some contact with the Nishikiba student council, didn’t you?”
I thought it had nothing to do with me, but I was wrong. This was trouble that directly involved us.
I should have asked Chiya about it properly beforehand.
The conversation was just between Akito and Yuto, but it was drawing the attention of everyone in the classroom.
And from the looks of it, most of them were on Yuto’s side. He must have rallied them before school even started.
“So what if we did?”
“That’s a problem. I’m a member of the Higashikiba student council.”
“Who we hang out with outside of school is none of your business.”
“If there’s going to be any interaction between schools, you need to get approval from the student council first.”
“Hah? And who told you that?”
Akito was right. This whole thing made no sense. Even if someone saw us hanging out somewhere, we never discussed who we were meeting inside the classroom.
The fact that Yuto had this information was suspicious.
“I heard it from someone I know in Nishikiba. It’s true, isn’t it?”
“This isn’t something for you to stick your nose into.”
“No, this is something I have to get involved in.”
“What? That makes no sense.”
“In the future, Nishikiba and Higashikiba will likely be working together more. You’ve heard rumors about a potential merger, haven’t you?”
“Hold on, Yuto-kun. That’s just a rumor.”
In the midst of the heavy, unapproachable atmosphere, Yuto dropped a statement I couldn’t ignore.
If Yuto had the upper hand when it came to school-related information, then letting him control the conversation would be dangerous.
“Yeah, Kaido is right. There’s no merger happening.”
“Then stop spreading false information and stirring things up.”
“But the fact that such rumors exist means that the higher-ups in both schools are already building relationships. If students act recklessly and mess things up, it’ll be a problem.”
“Yuto, what you’re saying is just speculation. Besides, I can’t imagine our interactions causing any issues.”
“Kaido… that kind of carelessness is dangerous.”
“I was with Akito during the break, and as far as I’m concerned, we were just building friendly relationships.”
“Akira has been involved in romantic troubles before. Nishikiba is an all-girls school. That alone is reason enough to be cautious. Don’t you all agree?”
With Yuto’s words, murmurs spread through the classroom.
Yuto was already at the center of the boys’ group, which had formed in opposition to Akito. Given the situation, his influence was at its peak.
I could hear words spreading among the boys, and this sentiment gradually extended to the girls’ groups as well.
However, the girls mostly supported Akito:
“Calling Akito a troublemaker? Seriously, and you call yourself an honor student?”
“Akito isn’t that kind of guy.”
“Yuto is so gross.”
The backlash was aimed entirely at Yuto alone.
That was how impactful his speech had been.
The boys were likely supporting him because he made it easy for them. They didn’t have to worry about the girls’ opinions, since Yuto was willingly taking all the heat.
This ability of his — this charisma — was probably why he was able to become the vice president of the student council.
But honestly, everything he’s saying just sounds like selfish nonsense. Yet, because the majority of the class agrees with him, dealing with this is tricky.
Akito must have realized this too, because he decided to take a different approach.
“Yuto, you’re misunderstanding something… The one who planned this whole thing was Riku. I had nothing to do with it.”
Akito’s ;different approach’ — was to dump the problem onto me.
It was a pain, but given his current situation, it was a smart move.
Yuto’s argument only seemed valid because he was directing it at Akito. If I was the one who initiated the interaction, then his entire premise would be incorrect.
But Yuto wasn’t really after the person who planned it. His real target was still Akito.
“It’s not about who suggested it. The problem is you, Akira.”
“You—!”
“Stop it!!”
Just as Akito was about to snap, a third voice interrupted.
“I was there too, and Akito-niisan didn’t do anything weird! It had nothing to do with school at all!”
With that, the atmosphere in the classroom shifted drastically.
While Yuto was the central figure among the boys, Shino was also genuinely popular.
Voices started emerging in our favor at last.
Even those who had supported Yuto began reconsidering their stance.
Just then, I noticed Takuma Ichinose. He had stood up, as if about to step forward, but then quietly sat back down. His actions were odd, but they went unnoticed because of his lack of presence.
“Y-yeah, you’re right. I got a bit too heated… I just wanted Akira to inform me if he was interacting with Nishikiba.”
“Hah? You were literally demanding approval just a moment ago.”
Sensing that he was at a disadvantage, Yuto backed off. His ability to retreat so cleanly was infuriating.
Akito muttered complaints under his breath, and Yuto shot him a glare before leaving.
And just like that, the tense atmosphere faded, and lunchtime returned to normal.
