Chapter 30 : I Want to be Relied on
After finishing breakfast, the arrival of a delivery worker reminded me that today was the day my new closet was arriving.
Thanks to going to bed early last night, I had recovered from my fatigue. However, I was surprised to see that the delivered closet was larger than expected.
“Will this be okay…?”
“I think it’s more manageable than having you carry it.”
“Really?”
“Really… Alright, here we go!”
Although the closet was tall, its depth was reasonable. When I tried lifting it, I realized it wasn’t as heavy as it looked. Still, just in case, I decided to prepare the dolly we had in the house.
If things had gone wrong, it might have gotten stuck in the hallway and never reached Miumi’s room. Fortunately, we managed to bring it in without any trouble.
Since we generally don’t enter each other’s rooms, Miumi looked a little embarrassed when I stepped inside. In reality, I had entered her room before in a moment of panic when I realized she didn’t have a spare key, but I’ve kept that a secret.
She’s a girl at that age, after all. It was probably a big deal for her to have a guy enter her room for the first time.
Girls tend to be particular about these things… I learned that firsthand when Chiya gave me a lecture after I entered her room in the past.
After placing the closet, I looked around the room.
There were still some cardboard boxes left, but the room was completely different from when I last saw it. The remaining boxes seemed to be filled with clothes that would be stored away soon.
“By the way, you have a really stylish interior.”
“Huh? Oh, um… thank you.”
“Obviously, it’s much neater than my room, but the color scheme is really nice.”
The white and blue tones seemed designed with forget-me-not colors in mind.
And they suited Miumi perfectly.
“Hearing that makes me worried about your room now, Riku-kun. I’ll do my best to clean it up!”
“Well… yeah… um… I’m really sorry about that.”
“It’s fine! Leave the cleaning to me!”
For some reason, Miumi seemed extremely confident and immediately hurried up the stairs to my room.
When I followed her, I found her waiting excitedly in front of the door.
“Um, may I open it?”
“I didn’t even ask before entering your room, so you don’t have to hold back either.”
She seemed nervous about stepping into a guy’s room.
Even though we lived together, if she got too self-conscious about things like this, it would make me awkward as well.
“Then, excuse me.”
“So, what do you think?”
“Huh? Wait… it’s actually… organized?”
“Well, step in a little further, and you’ll understand.”
Rather than being messy, my room just had a lot of things crammed into every available space. You wouldn’t notice it from the doorway, but once you stepped inside, it would become obvious.
Or so I thought, but the moment Miumi stood in the center of the room, her gaze locked onto something.
“Um… what is this?”
“I figured you’d ask… yeah, I knew it would catch your eye. That’s my work equipment.”
Miumi was staring not at my desk but at the large pen display tablet sitting on top of it.
At first, I had considered hiding it from her. But since we lived together, there wasn’t much point in keeping it a secret, so I had left it as it was.
“I see… but before that, we have cleaning to do!”
“Huh?”
“You’re right, there are things crammed into the gaps… Oh! Riku-kun, you can relax in the living room while I take care of this!”
However, Miumi’s interest was short-lived.
Maybe she picked up on my tone and sensed that it was something I didn’t want to talk about. Did I make her feel like she had to be considerate?
“That’s not going to work. Don’t I need to help move the bigger furniture?”
“Actually… oh! If I use this, I can probably pull things out more easily.”
She picked up my folding ruler. It might be useful for retrieving things from the gaps, but I’d be in trouble if it got bent.
“Yeah, no. Looks like I need to help after all.”
“…Is that really necessary?”
“Are you seriously against it!?”
“Yes.”
“I’m just helping when needed… but why do you want me to leave so badly?”
“Well… because, Riku-kun, you told me before to rely on you, didn’t you?”
“Yeah, I think I said something like that.”
“Cleaning your room was the first thing you ever relied on me for. If you don’t let me handle it, it feels like you don’t trust me.”
At first, I thought she was just being childish, but she actually had a valid reason.
And the way she said it made it hard for me to argue back.
“…Alright. Then I’ll go snoop around your room.”
“Huh? Um… why would you do that?”
“Is that a problem?”
“There’s nothing interesting in there, you know?”
Despite her words, her eyes darted around uneasily.
She probably had something hidden in there, but I wasn’t actually planning to invade her privacy.
Miumi is the kind of person who struggles to say no, so I decided to keep the teasing light.
“I’m just joking. But look, I’m letting you go through my room, right?”
“When you put it that way… I suppose you are.”
“I don’t think you’re going to snoop, but it’s natural to be curious.”
“Alright… but don’t interfere much, okay?”
“I’ll move the heavy stuff. I trust you, Miumi, so you should rely on me for the heavy lifting.”
“…You’re really stubborn, Riku-kun. But I understand now. I’ll rely on you when I need to.”
Miumi sighed in exasperation but finally gave in.
I meant what I said.
It wasn’t that I thought she’d go through my stuff, but there might be something I’d forgotten about that I wouldn’t want her to see.
So I couldn’t just let it slide.
That said, I might have overthought things.
I did help with moving the furniture, but most of the cleaning was just small tidying tasks, so I ended up with a lot of free time.
If I had nothing to do, I should’ve worked on my school assignments, but I just couldn’t focus.
In the end, I immersed myself in reading.
As I glanced at Miumi, I noticed she was nearly done. I left the room for a bit and returned with two drinks.
Just then, Miumi picked up something and spoke to me.
“This seems to be the last thing left… Is this an album?”
“Stop right there! These are my childhood photos — please don’t look inside!”
I had let my guard down… This was dangerous.
I immediately set the drinks down on the table and rushed to stop Miumi from opening it.
I moved so quickly, even I was surprised at my own reaction, and Miumi looked equally startled.
‘Why on earth wasn’t this put away properly!?’
Retracing my memories, I recalled the day Miumi moved in.
I had intended to hide it but ended up forgetting about it, and at some point, it must have fallen into a gap.
As soon as I realized that, I finally calmed down.
