What’s under Kamiyama-san’s paper bag?
Chapter 32 “Namito Kominato, Arai Hinata, Harusame Amano take action, while Kamiyama Samidare also ponders.”
On the final day of summer vacation, I came to a certain park alone. It was 6 PM, and the sun was gradually sinking towards the western sky, painting the sky with a beautiful crimson color.
There was no one in the park. The swings and sandbox were empty, devoid of any playful activity. The jungle gym, which had become less common to see nowadays, adorned the park with a sense of loneliness in the evening.
As I stepped into the park at dusk, I muttered while walking slowly towards the jungle gym, “Well… Are they ready? There’s still a little time left until the scheduled time, so I should double-check my preparations now.”
While walking, I reached into my pants pocket to confirm if ‘that thing’ was securely inside. My fingertips in the pocket felt a dry and crisp sensation. It was indeed there.
Reaching the bottom of the jungle gym, I effortlessly lifted my leg and hooked it onto one of the intersecting iron bars. I began to climb upwards, alternating between placing my hands and feet on the iron bars. In my mind, I mentally rehearsed the events that would unfold later today and swallowed a gulp of saliva.
The jungle gym that once seemed so large now felt small as I had become a high school student. I quickly reached the top and sat down on the highest level, taking out the contents I had checked in my pocket earlier, preparing for what was to come.
Kamiyama-san is coming to this park. It’s the last day of summer vacation, so I suggested to everyone in the club to gather and have a fireworks display, but what we’re about to do here… No, it’s not about fireworks. From now on, we… or rather, all of us, will…
As I contemplated what lay ahead, my smartphone suddenly chimed with a notification sound. Upon checking the screen, I saw two message notifications from the messaging app. Arai and Harusame had sent messages with only “Preparations OK” written in each.
It seemed like both of them had finished their preparations. Once again, I mentally envisioned the plan for what was to come and looked up at the crimson sky, reminiscing about events from a few days ago.
A few days ago, after discussing it with Harusame, I immediately approached Arai for advice. Both of them graciously said, “Why didn’t you consult with us earlier?” and together, we devised a plan to help Kamiyama-san remove the paper bag voluntarily, allowing her to live without it. And now, today, we were about to put our plan, “a certain operation,” into action.
All that’s left is to wait for Kamiyama-san’s arrival. We have the plan that we all came up with in mind. But… but, will this really go well? Is this method okay? Waves of anxiety forcefully push back against my heart as I sit on the top of the jungle gym.
It’s okay, we all thought it through. It will definitely work. No, we will make it work for sure. I reassure myself inwardly, fighting off the waves of unease in my heart.
Just do your best, Namito!
As I repeat these words to myself, I see a figure at the entrance of the park. The person is wearing a navy blue long skirt with a white summer jacket over their T-shirt. Their feet are adorned with low-heeled, refreshing sandals. And on their head, they have a brown paper bag covering it. It’s Kamiyama-san.
Before Kamiyama-san notices me, I turn my back to them while sitting on the top of the jungle gym. After a while, I hear Kamiyama-san’s footsteps approaching from behind me, and their voice calling out to me from beneath the jungle gym.
“Oh… Oh, sorry… Komino-kun. Has Arai-san or Harusame-chan not arrived yet?”
But I don’t respond.
Kamiyama-san speaks with an anxious tone to my silent back.
“Um… well… Komino-kun… right? It’s Kamiyama. We were planning to have fireworks here together today…”
Quietly sitting down, I muster up my determination within me.
We’ve come this far, all that’s left is to do it. Do your best, Namito!
Ignoring Kamiyama-san’s call, I gaze intently at what I held in my hand, and then I put it on my head. What I just put on my head is a paper bag. It’s a brown, plain paper bag similar to the one Kamiyama-san always wears. I put it on my head and stand up energetically on the top of the jungle gym.
Turning back to face Kamiyama-san, I speak loudly, echoing throughout the park.
“H-Hey… It’s been a while, girl from the past! Do you… remember me?”
At first, my voice trembles from embarrassment, but I manage to hold it together and say my lines according to the script. Through the hole in my paper bag, Kamiyama-san can see me. They also look up at me through the hole in the paper bag they’re wearing, their expression dumbfounded.
If someone who doesn’t know what’s going on were to witness this scene, they would surely think, “This is definitely a meeting of perverts.”
I let out a self-deprecating smile from within the paper bag. But such things don’t matter now.
Facing the dumbfounded Kamiyama-san, I deliver the next line.
“It’s been how many years since then? I came here today because there’s something I want to tell you! Yes… right here, in this park where we first met!”
In response, Kamiyama-san manages to speak, seemingly bewildered.
“Um… Komino-kun, right? And, the one from earlier was Harusame-chan, right? What are you two… um… I don’t understand what you’re saying…”
I reply.
“I am not Komino! My name is… My name is…”
At this point, I falter in my speech. Because what comes next is embarrassingly awkward. I feel too embarrassed to say it out loud as a high school student, but before I can continue, I hear a shout from the corner of the park, from within the bushes.
In a frilly, fluffy pure white skirt, and a frilly shirt to match. Holding a magic wand in her hand, with bright red hair. Wearing glossy patent leather shoes, she looked like she had jumped out of a two-dimensional world. There stood a magical girl, a sight that made you think so.
However, it wasn’t a life-size panel of a magical girl that we had seen many times before.
It was none other than Harusame herself, dressed in a magical girl cosplay, the one that she always walked around with. Harusame, dressed as a magical girl, emerged from the bushes and pointed directly at me on top of the jungle gym.
“Oh, oh, come down, Masked Detective! I’m going to settle things today!” she shouted.
Confused, Kamiyama spoke up.
“Um… Harusame-chan? And, Ko-minato-kun too… Um… I have no idea what’s going on.”
I had no idea what was going on either. Just as Kamiyama was about to say those words, I interrupted and shouted.
“Hahaha! Evil magical girl, you won’t disturb the peace of this town! Let’s go!”
With that, I made up my mind and jumped down from the jungle gym with force.
My vision was moving rapidly up and down.
Desperately trying to maintain my line of sight through the hole in the paper bag, I tried to bend my knees and soften the impact as my feet touched the ground. But even so, I couldn’t completely kill my momentum, and a tingling pain spread through the soles of my feet.
It wasn’t like a hero in an anime. But I was the Masked Detective now. If that were to be found out, wouldn’t I be disqualified as a hero?
I tried to keep a calm face… no, a calm paper bag, and adjusted my dwelling. Then, like a counterpart to Harusame in her magical girl outfit, I pointed directly at her with a sharp gesture.
Caught between the suspicious man wearing a paper bag and the girl dressed in a magical girl cosplay, Kamiyama was completely perplexed.
No matter how you looked at it, it was a completely incomprehensible situation.
Kamiyama, who had reached the peak of confusion being surrounded by the three of us, broke out in a sweat as usual.
SHe soaked the brown paper bag with sweat, and the sweat that dripped from her black hair darkened the ground.
However, I knew that an event that would further add to this confusion was about to happen.
“Alright, everyone, over here. Please follow me properly,” a girl’s voice came from the direction of the park entrance.
When the three of us turned our gaze in the direction of the voice, there was Arai in her usual school uniform.
And following Arai, a group of small children, probably in the lower grades of elementary school, entered the park. It seemed that Arai had fulfilled her role properly.
The plan that Harusame, Arai, and I had discussed and decided on was as follows:
Today, I would become Masked Detective Big Man and wear a paper bag over my head, appearing in front of Kamiyama-san. Then, Harusame, transformed into an evil magic girl, would make her entrance. After a fierce battle between the two, with the help of Kamiyama-san’s power, Big Man would somehow emerge victorious over the magic girl, restoring peace to the town. That was the plot of the skit.
Finally, as Masked Detective, I would tell Kamiyama-san that she didn’t need such a mask anymore and that she was a great hero on her own. I hoped that overwhelmed by our determination, Kamiyama-san would take off the paper bag. That was the plan we had devised.
And then, Arai would gather a group of children to watch the skit.
Although they were young children, we thought that once the paper bag was taken off in front of a large audience, Kamiyama-san wouldn’t resist revealing her true face at school anymore. So, we entrusted Arai, who had good connections, with the task of gathering the audience.
Looking back, I think it was a foolish plan. It was a crude and childish plan.
But when we thought about what we could do, each utilizing our own individuality… Well, this plan seemed to fit the best.
Besides, when I mentioned the audience, I didn’t expect anything grand. I just hoped that some of the neighborhood children who were bored at the end of summer vacation would come. And they did…
As I followed Arai into the park, I widened my eyes as I saw the number of children entering. Behind Arai came a massive group of children, seemingly enough to fill a whole grade, along with numerous adults who appeared to be their guardians. And to make matters worse, even the police and firefighters were coming in droves. Altogether, there were easily over a hundred people.
The park, in the twilight, suddenly became noisy, and we were instantly surrounded by spectators.
The young spectators cheered, shouting things like “Do your best!” and “Go for it!” The older spectators whispered to each other, saying things like “I heard it was a hero show,” or “Why the paper bags? And there are two of them,” as they openly scrutinized us. What on earth was going on?
I looked at Harusame in a panic.
But Harusame had the same shocked expression as me. In fact, since her face wasn’t covered by a paper bag, she seemed to be even more affected.
I moved closer to Arai, who was watching us with a supportive gaze at the front row of the audience, and confronted her.
“Wait a minute! What’s with this number of people? I asked you to gather a few children!”
Arai responded in a tone that implied it was only natural.
“Kominato-kun, the more, the merrier, you know? I reached out to all the children’s clubs within a 30-minute walk from this park using my connections. And besides, it’s dangerous for children to be out alone at this time, right? Of course, I asked their guardians to accompany them!”
“Th-then… what about the police and firefighters? Why did they come?”
Arai answered nonchalantly.
“Oh, that? Well, if you’re going to put on a performance in a park, you need permission from the police, right? And if you’re using explosives, you need the firefighters to be present.”
What is she saying?
“Gunpowder? We don’t have any plans to use gunpowder–” Before I could finish saying that, Arai interrupted me eagerly.
“Listen carefully, Kominato-kun. The stage setup is crucial to entertaining the audience, you know? I did some research on the masked detective for this operation. Turns out, they always fight at a quarry, and the villains explode with a large amount of gunpowder every time,” she said, trying to emphasize the importance.
We didn’t need to recreate it so faithfully, but Arai continued regardless, her excitement evident. “So, this time too, I prepared a massive amount of gunpowder. It’s more than enough. Trust me, we’ll make Harusame-chan explode with our final move!”
She grabbed my hand tightly, talking about making Harusame explode. It was a bizarre Japanese phrase that we definitely wouldn’t use.
As I stood there, pondering what to do in front of a beaming Arai, the children in the audience started booing. The three of us—one magical girl and two paper bags—were standing still without any movement.
There was no turning back now. Regardless of the size of the audience, we were all here to do the same thing. Although I was a bit concerned about the gunpowder, well… hopefully everything would be fine. I hoped it would be fine.
I made up my mind, turned my back to Arai and the large audience, and faced Harusame. Following the script, I shouted at her with desperation.
“Wait… I’ve kept you waiting, evil magical girl! I won’t let you have your way in this town!”
Harusame, hearing my words, blushed and stammered as she continued her lines.
“Eh…? W-Wait… Are we starting just like this? …Really? …Fine, let’s just do it then! Um… Hmph! Do you think you can defeat me, masked detective? I’ll turn you into ashes with my magic! My magical power is incredible, you know!”
Harusame, with her adorable face in her magical girl cosplay, challenged me while the audience cheered in unison. She was flustered by the loud cheers, and her face became even redder. Nevertheless, she managed to wave the magic wand she held in her hand and shouted at me.
“Eat this! Masked Detective! My magic… Magical Annihilation Flare!”
A dangerous incantation came out of Harusame’s mouth.
According to the script, I was supposed to pretend to suffer and fall to the ground after this ominous incantation. However, before I could even pretend to be in pain, the ground beneath my feet exploded.
It wasn’t a metaphor or an exaggeration. Quite literally, the ground at my feet exploded. The audience erupted in cheers, but the echoes of the explosion overwhelmed my ears. I wasn’t acting; I genuinely fell to the ground, blown away by the blast.
“W-What is this massive amount of gunpowder? One wrong step, and I could’ve died!” I said, looking towards Arai, and she replied confidently.
“Don’t worry! I calculated everything perfectly. Leave it to me! Our priority now is to entertain the audience! So, make sure Harusame-chan explodes properly in the end!”
I thought to myself, “She completely forgot about our initial purpose…” And of course, Harusame hadn’t heard about the explosion. She was taken aback by the power of her own magic. But as soon as she realized that I was safe and heard the cheers from the audience, she seemed to get carried away. She began speaking lines that weren’t in the script.
“How… how’s this? This is my deadly magic, Magical Annihilation Flare! I’ll burn down the likes of Trashnato… I mean, Masked Detective, without a problem! There! Enjoy it to the fullest! Magical Annihilation Flare! Flare! Flareeee!”
Harusame wildly waved her magic wand while repeatedly shouting the name of the technique. As a result, the ground right in front of me continued to explode, and colorful smoke in shades of red, blue, and yellow rose into the air. I couldn’t help but roll away from the spot and escape the blast.
That Arai… Did she calculate and prepare the gunpowder, taking into account this moment where Harusame would get carried away?
I glanced discreetly from inside the paper bag at the audience’s reaction. Except for some officials, the audience seemed captivated by this grand explosion. Not only the children but even their guardians were cheering for the magical girl’s magic with their hands covering their mouths.
However… However, I couldn’t just stay defeated. Because right now, I am a hero!
I pretended to be blown away by the blast and rolled on the ground while moving closer to Kamiyama-san, who was just sitting there dumbfounded, as if by some coincidence. I finally reached her and sat on the center stage, staring in a daze.
Magical girl Harusame shouted, “Pathetic… Masked Detective. You can’t even touch my magic… That’s why you’re called Trashnato or Trashminato or just plain Trash! You’ve been running around like a scared little mouse, but it ends now… I’ll make sure you and the girl in the paper bag meet your doom!”
With a loud declaration, Harusame raised her magic wand and swung it down towards us.
“Magical Annihilation Flare!”
However, this time there was no explosion. Harusame swung her wand at us multiple times, but no magical flare appeared at all. The audience started to murmur, and I stood up with determination, taking Kamiyama-san’s hand and addressing the audience.
“…It seems that her magical power has run out, evil magical girl. Look around you. It was the power of justice from these audience members that nullified your magic. Isn’t that right, Kamiyama-san?”
Kamiyama-san, in a daze, nodded while sweating profusely.
“Um… Uh… Yes…”
With a frustrated expression, Harusame responded to our lines.
“What… What is happening…? The power of the people in this town is so strong…! Ma… Magical Annihilation Flare! Flare! Flareeee!”
But no magical flare was fired anymore.
Now it’s our turn!
I slowly turned in a 360-degree circle, observing the surrounded audience, and then I shouted loudly.
“As you can see, the evil magical girl’s power has been nullified by the power of justice from everyone here! Now it’s our turn… It’s our turn to defeat the evil magical girl! But we lack the strength! So, everyone! Please send your power of justice to me… and to this girl wearing the paper bag, Kamiyama-san! With the gathering of your power, peace will surely come to this town!”
Upon hearing my words, the audience initially seemed unsure of what to do, looking around for guidance. Suddenly, a child among the audience raised their voice.
“Go for it, Big Man! kamiyama-san!”
In response to those words, the audience began chanting, “Go for it, Big Man! Kamiyama-san!” It gradually turned into a unified chorus, surrounding us like a vortex.
Overwhelmed by the chants, Harusame stumbled.
“What… What is this…? I can’t believe… I never imagined the people of this town had such strong power…! I… I won’t be defeated in a place like this…!”
Echoing her words, I shouted with the loudest voice yet.
“It ends here, magical girl! Both Kamiyama-san and I have received the power of justice from the people here! I am Masked Detective, the protector of this town’s peace! Always fighting with dignity! Take this!”
Saying that, I took Kamiyama-san’s hand and raised it high. Then, while vigorously swinging it towards Harusame, I shouted the name of the signature move of the animated Masked Detective.
“This is the finishing blow! Masked Detective Final Big Bang!”
At that moment, the biggest explosion of the day occurred at Harusame’s feet. Multicolored smoke filled the area, as if we were witnessing a live-action superhero show.
Eventually, the summer breeze dispersed the smoke, and the surroundings became visible again. In the spot where Harusame had been standing, there was only a charred magical wand, abandoned and alone.
I couldn’t believe it… Did she really explode…?
As I panicked, Harusame, covered in dust, emerged from the ground with a face on the verge of tears.
“Cough… Cough… I… I’ll retreat for today… I’ll… let you go… But remember, someday… I’ll come back to claim this town! Remember that!”
Thank goodness. It seemed she didn’t actually explode.
Harusame, while coughing, faithfully delivered her final line from the script and tearfully exited the stage, weaving through the audience.
Thank you, Harusame. You did well, without succumbing to embarrassment, and you didn’t lose to Arai either. I must express my gratitude to her next time.
As Harusame exited, a wave of applause and cheers erupted from the audience. Children, parents, and even the officials joined in, applauding and clapping for our performance.
Thus, our skit came to an end… or so it seemed.
I waited for the applause to die down and turned to Kamiyama-san, who was still holding my hand. Quietly but firmly, this time without a script, I spoke my own words.
“With this, the peace of this town has been protected. Thank you, Kamiyama-san.”
Kamiyama-san responded.
“Um… Well… Yes, thank you too?”
“Actually, there’s something I need to tell you, Kamiyama-san. Can you listen?”
As I said that, Kamiyama-san nodded and lightly shook the paper bag up and down.
Gradually, the audience became quiet, listening attentively to our conversation.
I spoke.
“In the past, there was a boy whom Kamiyama-san met. That boy was… me from the past. When I was in third grade, I entrusted Kamiyama-san with the paper bag.”
Upon hearing my words, Kamiyama-san showed a surprised gesture and lightly shook the paper bag up and down.
I continued my confession to Kamiyama-san.
“But I had completely forgotten about that. Until the night of our training camp, when I heard the old stories from Kamiyama-san. I’m truly sorry.”
As I apologized, Kamiyama-san waved both hands in front of her body and shook them vigorously, denying my apology. Drops of sweat scattered from her fingertips and landed on the paper bag I was wearing.
“It was… like that. But it’s not your fault at all… It’s actually me who wanted to be as confident as that boy… No, like Ko-Minato-kun… I wanted to be able to stand tall like him… But I couldn’t… So… I’m sorry…”
I continued speaking to Kamiyama-san, who was apologizing.
“That’s why today. We settled things from back then.”
“Settled things…?”
“Do you remember what I said to you back then? What the younger me said to you?”
As I asked the question, kamiyama-san pondered for a moment and answered hesitantly.
“Um… well… I think it was something like, ‘From today, you’re also a Big Man. You’re taller than me. You have the potential to be a Big Man. So let’s protect the town together!’… I think that’s what it was…”
“Yes, that’s why today, I… no, we protected the town like this.”
A gasp could be heard from inside Kamiyama-san’s paper bag.
I continued.
“So, there’s something I want to tell Kamiyama-san, who protected the town like this. It’s… that… um…”
As I struggled to speak the words that followed, suddenly a voice came from the audience. It was a little girl.
The girl turned towards me and said, “Do your best, Big Man!” Her words of encouragement echoed through the crowd. And in response, several other children joined in, turning the cheers into a collective roar of support from the entire audience.
In the now darkened park, the cheers for Big Man resounded.
With the support of everyone behind me, I gathered my courage and spoke to Kamiyama-san. Not scripted lines or dialogue, but my true words.
“The thing I want to convey… is that the paper bag I entrusted to you back then. I think it has fulfilled its purpose in this very moment.”
After finishing my sentence, I took off the paper bag that I had been wearing on my head.
Kamiyama-san simply listened to my words without saying anything.
The cheers from the audience gradually faded away, and the park, now completely shrouded in darkness, was enveloped in silence.
In the quiet night park, surrounded by a large audience, the sweat still pouring from Kamiyama-san’s body, she continued to face me, holding the paper bag towards me as if contemplating something.
She placed her hand on her chest, took a deep breath, and then tightly gripped her hand as she searched for the right words. Unable to find the right words, she exhaled with a trembling breath, placing her hand on her chest again. Kamiyama-san desperately searched for words, trying to express her feelings. I could sense her nervousness and confusion.
As I watched her, I thought to myself, “Maybe it didn’t work… If the paper bag could come off so easily with this plan, maybe Kamiyama-san didn’t have to go through so much trouble… Perhaps I’ve pushed her into a corner with this exaggerated act… Maybe I’ve done something terrible… Shouldn’t I have done this?”
Just as I was starting to feel regret…
From outside the circle of spectators, a particularly loud cheer erupted.
“Kamiyama-san!”
The voice belonged to Harusame.
The attention of both kamiyama-san and the audience focused on Harusame.
Wearing her tattered magical girl costume, with dirt still on her face, she had been watching our every move.
Harusame raised her voice even louder.
“I… I heard everything from Ko-Minato! About Kamiyama-san and about Ko-Minato… What happened between the two of you in the past… And because of that, I… I thought if there was anything I could do, I wanted to do it… No, I didn’t just want to, I wanted to! Because… because we are…”
Harusame paused her words and took a deep breath. Then, after a brief hesitation, her face turned bright red as she shouted.
“Because we are… friends!”
And then, another voice joined in.
“I am too… I am your friend too! Kamiyama-san, Harusame-chan, and Ko-Minato-kun, we’re all important friends! So… do your best, Kamiyama-san!”
This time it was Arai.
And in response, the entire crowd of spectators erupted with chants of “Do your best, Kamiyama-san!”
I don’t know if this was the effect that Arai meant by saying, “The stage set is important to entertain the audience,” but I couldn’t tell. However, the audience was wholeheartedly cheering for Kamiyama-san.
Embracing the cheers, Kamiyama-san, who had initially seemed flustered and looked around, sweating profusely like I had never seen before, even creating small puddles on the ground, finally took a deep breath and began to speak with determination.
“Um… um… Ko-Minato-kun. And also, Arai-san, and Harusame-chan… Thank you so much for going this far for me today. I’m really happy.”
I nodded silently.
The audience also stopped their previous cheers and waited quietly for her words.
Kamiyama-san continued.
“I… I… You see, I’ve always wanted to be like that boy… Like the old Ko-Minato-kun. That’s why even today, I wore this paper bag…”
I nodded once again in silence.
“But, you know, when I did that, wearing the paper bag became the norm… And if I didn’t wear it, I felt embarrassed… Eventually, I ended up giving up on everything.”
In the night park, surrounded by me, Arai, Harusame, and a large crowd of townspeople, Kamiyama-san continued to weave her words.
“Friendships, club activities, after-school chats… I gave up on all of that… But, thanks to Arai-san, Harusame-chan, and meeting Ko-Minato-kun… I was able to experience everything I had given up on until now… So, so… these past few months have been truly enjoyable for me. Even someone like me could make friends properly. Could participate in club activities properly. I was really happy. So, well… I might get scolded if I say this, but I was thinking that maybe it’s okay to stay like this, wearing the paper bag… just like this…”
Once again, I nodded, this time showing a deeper affirmation.
“Hey, Ko-Minato-kun… Was I able to communicate properly with everyone? Was I able to have fun playing together?”
This time, instead of nodding, I gazed straight into the eyes peeking through the hole in Kamiyama-san’s paper bag, and smiled ever so slightly.
Tears were welling up in Kamiyama-san’s eyes.
They were transparent, beautiful tears.
And now, I told Kamiyama-san the words I had swallowed during the training camp, without feeling embarrassed this time.
“What does that mean…?”
“It means exactly what it sounds like. Whether you’re wearing the paper bag or not, Kamiyama-san is still Kamiyama-san. Our relationship doesn’t change at all. Besides, that paper bag has already served its purpose. So, I can see through that paper bag. Even now.”
Saying that, I walked closer to Kamiyama-san’s side, looking up at her, who was a head taller than me. Behind the paper bag, I could clearly see Kamiyama-san’s face, a mix of tears and laughter.
“Even now, it looks like Kamiyama-san is both crying and smiling. It’s an indescribable expression. I can see it clearly.”
With those words, I smiled warmly.
“W-What are you saying…? There’s no way… something like that…”
“See, now you’re surprised.”
As I said that, Kamiyama-san smiled with tears in her eyes. Perhaps her smile was conveyed to the audience as well, because at first, it was a small applause, but it quickly turned into a big round of applause that enveloped us.
We laughed at each other within the applause for a while. Now, in front of my eyes, there’s Kamiyama-san’s paper bag. The usual brown paper bag. Inside Kamiyama-san’s paper bag, there was the most radiant smile.
