Episode 55: He’s Like a Tiger, If I Had to Compare Him (?)
“Think you can take on this many guys?” “Huh? One’s already down, and there are only two left, right? Normally, you’d save a line like that for when you’ve got five or six guys with you.”
Rei wasn’t strong because he was good at fighting or experienced in brawls—it was something more fundamental than that.
“Don’t mess with me!”One of the former captain’s lackeys charged at Rei.
“Rei?!” “Come on, bring it.” Rei didn’t even make a move to dodge. “Take this!”
A punch landed on his face, followed by another to his stomach. The force was enough to produce dull thuds.
But— “That hurts!” Rei didn’t go down.
“Now it’s my turn!” He struck back, landing blows in the exact spots he’d been hit.
“Gah!” “What’s wrong? You’re all fine hitting people, but you clam up as soon as you get hit? Huh?”
“Ah! I-I’m sorry!” The guy turned tail and ran away in disgrace. With that, the two lackeys were dealt with.
“Y-you’re insane, Rei! You know what this means? You’ll get more than suspension for this!”
“Yeah? Expulsion, huh… So, no matter what I do now, they can’t punish me any worse, right?”
“Y-you… Are you serious?” “I’m always serious.”
And he was. His eyes said it all. It was clear as day—Rei wasn’t thinking about the consequences at all.
“Rei! Stop! You have to stop this!” It didn’t matter what happened to the former captain, but Rei was different.
“…Anzai-senpai.” “I’m fine! I’m fine!” She hopped in place and waved her arms around to show she was unharmed. “…”” R-Rei? What? Was it boring or something?”
“Not really… It’s just… the thrill’s kind of gone now.” “Man, Rei was something else back then—ferocious, like he was bristling all over.”
“Yeah, it’s a bit embarrassing to talk about now—haha.””No, seriously… Oh, Rei! When’d you get back?”
At some point, Rei had taken the empty seat and was now devouring a plate piled high with scrambled eggs and crispy bacon.
“Rei-kun, could I have a bit of that?” “Of course. Actually, I made it to share with you two, but you were busy talking.”
Shion scooped some onto her plate as Rei offered the dish. “By the way, Rei-kun, how did you avoid even getting suspended after causing such a big commotion?”
“Oh, that? Well…” Mariri glanced at Rei. He showed no reaction and continued munching on a croissant.
“Actually, the real trouble came afterward.” “Really?” “Yeah, after that incident, the school launched an investigation, and they found out something huge.”
She cleared her throat. The violence was a big deal, but what overshadowed it was the revelation that the former captain was the head of the club council.
“He was embezzling the council’s funds.” “I see… But wasn’t the tennis club unofficial at the time?”
“Yeah, but we still had to send someone to help out with the council since we used a club room.”
“And so, after all that, Rei got off with just three days of community service and a week as a professor’s errand boy.”
“Afterward, there was a… club war. Man, I felt like a manga protagonist.” “A club war? I think you mentioned that before.”
“Yeah, you can probably piece it together, Shion. The mess the former captain left fell squarely on the tennis club.” “That makes sense. The council collects fees from each club, after all.”
Shion nodded deeply. “One last question, Rei-kun. This one’s for you.”
“Hmm? What’s up?” “How come you could take so many hits and still be fine?”
Mariri had wondered about it, too. Usually, someone inexperienced in fights would freeze up after getting punched in the face even once.
“Hmm… Hmm? Why is that, I wonder?” “Huh?” His response was unexpected, but very typical of Rei.
“I’ve never really thought about it. But if I had to say…” After a moment’s pause, he spoke.
“If it’s my body—if it’s just my body—I can endure anything. And if it’s for the people I want to protect, my spirit will never break. For Shion-senpai or Mari-senpai, I’ll never—”
“…” “…” “Wait, why’d you both go quiet?” “Uh, well… Hey, Shion?”
“Y-yeah, this is… yeah.”Mariri and Shion turned their faces away in unison.
“Wait, what? Did my words not land? Was it that bad? This hurts, you know.”
No, there was no way they could look him in the eye after that. “Man, what can I say… This is just sad. So sad.”
As Rei feigned sorrow, a phone rang. “…Who is it?”
“It’s not mine.” “It’s me.” Shion glanced at her phone and turned pale.
Her face twisted with fear and anxiety, emotions Mariri had never seen on her before.
“Is… something wrong?” “I need to step out for a moment.”
With that, Shion left the room. For some reason, her retreating figure seemed burdened with sorrow.
“Mariri -senpai, is it okay if I go after her?” “Yeah, go ahead, you idiot boyfriend.”
“On it!” Mariri just watched as he dashed off to chase after Shion.
And quietly, she muttered to herself: “You’re so damn cool, you know that?”
