Episode 42: Boarding the Luxury Cruise Ship!
The massive luxury cruise ship rested in the harbor at night.
Golden-orange lights shimmered and danced on the surface of the rippling water.
“Uh… I can’t seem to calm down,” I murmured while standing in line to board the ship.
In my entire life, I’d never even seen a ship like this up close, let alone set foot on one. For the average college student, this was definitely not a typical experience.
“Uhana, you’re way too nervous. At the end of the day, it’s just a ship. Its interior is probably decent, at best. Look at Shion; she’s totally composed.”
The department head casually gestured toward Shion, who wore a stunning red dress. The elegant fabric hugged her figure, revealing her back, and making her look unbelievably alluring.
“Kazuma, if you’re feeling uneasy, would you like me to calm you down with a kiss?”
Shion, in her elegant white dress with open shoulders that exuded maturity and grace, casually made the proposal.
“A kiss wouldn’t calm me down—it would knock me out,” I replied.
If not unconscious, I’d probably die from the sheer impact. Both of them were exuding way too much charm tonight. It was almost unbearable to look directly at them.
“All right, it’s boarding time. Let’s go, you two,” the department head announced after checking her watch.
As she said, the line began moving, and before we knew it, we were stepping aboard the cruise ship.
“This is… just ‘decent’?”The interior was nothing short of a luxurious five-star hotel.
A rich red carpet stretched out before us, and the pristine white walls showed not a single blemish. My heart pounded louder with each step.
“Hey, are you okay? You’re spacing out,” the department head said. “Uh, yeah, I’m fine,” I replied, snapping out of it.
The department head seemed oddly comfortable here. Maybe she frequents places like this? Could she secretly be from a wealthy family?
As I entertained the thought, Shion softly smiled and said, “Shall we head to the dining hall, Kazuma?”
Without hesitation, she linked her arm with mine. “Hey! That’s not fair!”
The department head quickly claimed my other side, wrapping her arm around mine.
“Uh, this is making it hard to walk…”
I didn’t remember the ship’s name, but I knew our destination was Sapporo, Hokkaido.
The trip had been planned to escape the summer heat, and apparently, the department head had managed to get tickets for this cruise. The journey was set to take about two days, with plenty of time to relax.
“Whoa!” Upon entering the dining hall, I couldn’t hold back my amazement.
A grand chandelier sparkled above, illuminating a spread of countless dishes. It was my first time seeing a buffet with no curry in sight.
“Let’s see… Oh, our table’s over there,” the department head pointed out.
“Whoa!” “This is… beautiful,” Shion remarked.
The table was by the window, offering a breathtaking view of the city lights sparkling like an orchestra of stars.
“It’s like… a symphony of lights,” I muttered. “Huh? What’s this guy saying?” the department head scoffed, breaking the moment.
“By the way, department head,” I said, needing to clarify something.
“What is it?” “How much did these tickets cost?”
I guessed that they must’ve been at least tens of thousands of yen per person.
“Oh, about that… My dad’s acquaintance gave them to us, so they were free,” she said nonchalantly.
“Wow… Who is your dad, the Prime Minister or something?” I thought, sipping the welcome drink. It turned out to be a non-alcoholic cocktail.
“Hmm, Kazuma, don’t you know?” Shion asked, sipping her drink with a level of elegance far beyond my own.
“Wait, Shion, don’t—” The department head hastily whispered something to her.
“You really think knowing would change how Kazuma behaves?”
“…Probably not, but…” “Then I’ll keep quiet,” Shion replied, ending the conversation.
Sensing that I shouldn’t pry further, I let it go. “Shall we get some food?” Shion suggested, standing up gracefully.
Her every movement was mesmerizing.
“Oh, I need to greet someone I know, so you two go ahead and start eating,” the department head said, clasping her hands in apology before heading toward the kitchen.
“Well, let’s eat,” I said, deciding not to wait and braving the battlefield that was the buffet line.
About ten minutes later, the department head returned.
Between bites of roast beef and other delicacies, we chatted and laughed, and time flew by. Soon, an hour had passed, and the other guests began leaving the dining hall.
“Ugh, I can’t eat anymore,” I groaned. I had indulged in enough roast beef for a lifetime.
“Looks like it’s getting late. Let’s head to our rooms. The staff said our luggage has already been brought up,” the department head said.
“I agree. I’m quite satisfied,” Shion added. “Same here. Let’s—oh, wait. I need to make a quick stop,” I said, excusing myself to the restroom.
The restroom was as elegant as the rest of the ship. After finishing up, I washed my hands, marveling at the luxurious surroundings.
“This whole day doesn’t feel real,” I muttered. Looking in the mirror, I saw myself dressed in a suit with perfectly styled hair. It was like I’d just walked out of a salon.
“Alright, let’s get back—” Suddenly, something familiar appeared in the mirror.
Someone very real and very unexpected.
“Ah!” Our eyes met in the mirror. Behind me stood another male guest.
“Why are you here?” “Why are you here?”
It was Akira Isaka. His slicked-back blonde hair and sharp eyes gave him a slightly different vibe than usual.
“Hey, Isaka, what’s going on?” A familiar voice called from outside. I knew who it belonged to. “Don’t tell me… That’s Utakata outside?” I asked.
Akira sighed in resignation. “Yeah, it’s him. We’re here for some business. You’re with Saionji-senpai and the department head, I take it?”
“Yeah,” I nodded. The stage was set.
A luxury cruise ship. A detective and his assistant.
And me, along with them.
There’s no way nothing is going to happen.
