Episode 22: Let’s Go on a Picnic
The long-awaited weekend had arrived. I had just finished the breakfast that my senior had prepared when, out of nowhere, she said:
“Hey, Rei-kun. Want to go on a picnic?” I blinked, momentarily surprised. “Sure, sounds good. When do you want to go?”
“Today.” “Eh! Today?!” It was already 9 a.m. So that meant we were planning to prepare everything and leave right away?
“Well, actually, I’ve already prepared everything.” “Wow, you’re quick. That’s impressive.”
She was more nimble than I expected. What happened for her to act like this today? Was something bothering her?
“Umm… Shion-senpai, is everything okay?” I asked, my concern creeping in. Could she have had something unpleasant happen that made her want to take a break?
“…I’m fine.” It seemed like there was something. For her to be acting like this was unlike her. Her attempt to brush it off only made me more suspicious.
“Well then!” I clapped my hands in excitement. “Let’s go! I’ve been wanting to go on a picnic too!”
“Rei-kun… Thank you. I’m sorry for dragging you into this on your day off,” she said with a sheepish smile.
“Don’t worry about it. You always make my meals, so it’s the least I can do,” I replied, casually brushing off her apology.
“…I see. You’re right. Thank you, Rei-kun,” she said, her smile broadening. “I guess that means… you finally consider me your fiancée?”
It felt like a trap. That was a completely different subject! It’s like comparing udon to soba — they’re both noodles, but different!
“Well, um, I guess… anyway, I’ll head back and get ready. I’ll meet you at 11,” I said, trying to sidestep the conversation.
“Got it. I’ll see you then.” It wasn’t long before we were standing in front of a large park, two stations away from the nearest stop.
“Wow, this place is incredible,” I remarked, scanning the vast, green space before us. The park had expansive grasslands and shady trees. It was serene and perfect for a relaxing day, even in the middle of the season.
“I love this place,” Shion-senpai said, her tone soft and nostalgic.
“Yeah, it’s nice,” I agreed, looking around at the calm atmosphere. Though it was a large park, few children were playing. It had a very peaceful vibe.
I took out a blue tarp from my bag, spreading it out on the ground and anchoring the corners with stakes to prevent it from blowing away in the wind.
“Alright, let’s sit down,” I said. “Yes, thank you,” Shion-senpai replied, sitting down gracefully next to me, and placing the picnic basket on the ground.
Silence settled between us, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. The breeze felt gentle, cooling but not cold, like a soft sigh.
“Rei-kun,” she said suddenly, her voice quiet.
Her words felt like she was stepping closer to me, and I couldn’t help but smile a little. I nodded silently, waiting for her to speak more, curious about what was on her mind.
“I’m not the person you think I am,” she said, her words carrying an air of vulnerability. I didn’t need to ask. I understood immediately.
“I’m shallow, jealous, and I’m not a good person,” she continued, her voice trembling slightly.
“…That’s not true,” I said, but I knew better than to argue. If I denied it right away, I wouldn’t be able to convince her. She probably wouldn’t believe me anyway.
“When I was in elementary school, my mom and dad separated,” she said, her gaze distant as she recalled the past.
“…I see,” I said softly, urging her to continue. “It was my mom’s fault. She started doubting my dad.”
Shion-senpai’s voice grew quieter as she spoke, painting a picture of her childhood. I listened closely, feeling an overwhelming sense of sympathy for her.
“My dad was a hardworking man. He would leave early for work and come back late. My mom, on the other hand, was someone full of love.
She would wake up early, prepare breakfast for both Dad and me, and take care of all the household chores. She was a devoted wife.”
That sounded like an ideal family dynamic to me, but of course, things weren’t always as perfect as they seemed on the surface.
“But my mom… she valued time spent together more than anything else. And I think that’s when things started to go wrong. She started to question my dad’s late nights and his time away from home.
She wondered if he had another woman if he was cheating,” Shion-senpai continued, her voice tinged with bitterness. “But my dad wasn’t like that.”
It was a sad, painful irony — love turned into suspicion. I couldn’t relate to it firsthand, but I could still understand how that deep, overwhelming love could become toxic in the wrong circumstances.
“Then one day, it all exploded. Mom confronted Dad, accusing him of cheating. ‘You’re never home, so you must be with someone else,’ she yelled. And hearing that, Dad… he looked so hurt. He left after that, unable to take it anymore.”
It clicked in my mind then. I finally understood what Shion-senpai was trying to tell me.
“I think… I’m the same. Just like my mom, I’m jealous and insecure. And even if I were to start dating someone, part of me would always doubt them. So…”
She paused, taking a slow breath as her eyes closed, lost in her thoughts.
“That’s why I never intended to be in a relationship. I knew that if I fell for someone, I would only end up hurting both them and myself.”
Her words were full of self-awareness, and it made me realize just how much she had been holding back. I didn’t know everything about her, but what I knew made me understand her better now.
“Rei-kun,” she called softly. “Yes?” I answered, looking her in the eye.
“If you ever get tired of me, if I scare you, or if you start to hate me, I… I don’t know what I would do,” she whispered, her voice trembling as if afraid of my answer.
Her pain was clear, and I couldn’t just ignore it. I gently took her hand, my heart aching for her.
“Senpai,” I said firmly, looking her in the eyes. “I told you before, right? I want to live up to your expectations.”
She nodded, silently waiting for me to continue.
“I’ve never thought of you as a burden, or something scary. I’m happy and grateful to be with you. Honestly, sometimes I wonder if I deserve to be with someone as kind and beautiful as you.”
She blinked in surprise, her face softening. I could feel the weight in my chest lift just a little, but there was still more to say.
“I don’t want you to be afraid anymore,” I said, my voice steady. “I want to be with you, Senpai. I don’t care about any of those doubts you have. I’m not going anywhere.”
The words I had been holding in for so long finally spilled out, and as I spoke them, I could feel my face burning. My heart was racing like never before.
“I love you, Shion-senpai. Will you go out with me?”
Her eyes widened in shock, and I could see the tears welling up in her eyes. For a moment, I thought she might say something else, but then…
“…Do you mean it?” she asked softly, her voice trembling. I nodded, feeling my emotions surge. “Yes. I love you. I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life.”
She gasped, and without warning, threw her arms around me, pulling me into a tight hug. It was so sudden and full of emotion that I nearly lost my balance, falling back onto the picnic blanket.
“Rei-kun… I love you! I do!” she cried, squeezing me tightly. I felt the warmth of her embrace, and despite the slight discomfort, I couldn’t help but smile. I hugged her back, feeling the happiness spread through me like sunlight.
“I love you too, Shion-senpai,” I said, my voice soft but full of conviction. For a moment, time seemed to freeze as we held each other. But then, I gently tapped her shoulder.
“Senpai, I can’t breathe,” I said with a chuckle. She pulled back slightly, laughing, but there was still a hint of tears in her eyes.
“I’m sorry. I just… I can’t believe this is real,” she whispered. “It’s real,” I replied, smiling warmly. “And I’m not going anywhere.”
And so, our journey together officially began. What? Are you expecting the typical romantic comedy ending here? Not quite.
This is not your usual rom-com. This is a comedy romance. And so, my chaotic university life with Shion-senpai continued—full of laughter and plenty of misadventures.
