Episode 15: Love, Lies, and Seiro Pills
“How was it? Did you figure it out?”
As soon as Nikaidou returned to the bench from the batter’s box, he asked Utagata.
Analyzing Ai’s chasing fastball—that was the reason he had brought her here in the first place.
“Shion Saionji’s pitches chase Rei Uuka. Nothing more, nothing less.”
Utagata replied nonchalantly while fiddling with her smartphone.
“I’m asking how to predict the ball’s trajectory.”
Silence. It seemed dragging her here against her will hadn’t helped. She was still in a foul mood.
“Fine. If we win today, I’ll get you another box of the new Nokemon Card expansion.”
“For real!?”
Yes! Nokemon Cards worked like magic. Nikaidou celebrated internally with a fist pump.
“…Ahem. Alright. I’ll analyze it for you. But you owe me!”
Her gaze shifted sharply to the field.
“The decisive moment will come during the final inning—our last chance to attack.”
“Will that be enough to win?”
“I don’t know. But probably, the only person who can hit that pitch, even knowing its trajectory, is you, Nikaidou.”
Utagata spread her arms, shaking her head. Even for her, finding a foolproof strategy was impossible.
“Why do you think so?”
“Well, because Rei is doing something crazy, obviously.”
“What?!”
“Yo, Mohawk from the Handicrafts Club!”
“Huh? Don’t get cocky just because Nikaidou-san likes you!”
“Wait, am I being targeted? Yikes, sorry, I’m not into guys!”
The catcher’s role is crucial—often called the linchpin of the team.
Their job is to catch pitches and direct the defense. It’s the only position in baseball that allows giving direct commands to others, making it uniquely proactive in a reactive game.
Incidentally, this was something I learned from a book lent to me by a senior earlier.
“Well, let’s have a good game.”
I positioned myself just inside the batter’s box—right on the edge of the inside strike zone. It was a tricky area to hit.
“W-What kind of pitch is this!?”
Two strikes immediately. I couldn’t catch the ball, but I had learned to block it with my chest. Painful, sure, but far better than earlier hits.
(Nice pitch, Senpai!)
(Thank you. Where should I throw next?)
(Anywhere is fine. I’ll adjust and catch it.)
“Tch! Don’t get full of yourself!”
I remembered something I read in that book—a fascinating phrase I’d come across.
“Let me teach you something interesting.”
“Huh? What’re you on about all of a sudden?”
Whisper tactics.
This strategy involved speaking to the batter at the plate, disrupting their focus. The key was to say something that would be impossible to ignore.
“Our team captain? She’s not wearing panties today.”
“What?! What did you just say!?”
His eyes locked onto the shortstop—our captain.
Gotcha!
(Now’s your chance, Senpai!)
(On it!)
A blazing fastball. It practically sizzled through the air.
“Strike three! Batter out!”
“Gah… Nice pitch.”
The impact felt like it resonated all the way to my core. Perhaps it was the talk about our captain that fueled it?
“Three outs! Change sides!”
“Told you, didn’t I?”
Watching the entire sequence unfold from the bench, Utagata sighed, looking exasperated.
“That was quite the tactic.”
In contrast, Nikaidou wore a self-assured grin, clapping his hands in admiration. His confidence remained unwavering.
“Then we’ll counter with a rumor so outrageous that it’ll enrage him as a man, leaving him unfazed by their whispers.”
“Oh? You, the brainless Nikaidou, came up with that? What kind of rumor?”
“Hmm, maybe something like this…”
The pitching on both sides was impeccable, keeping the game scoreless as the innings progressed.
To be honest, even our captain couldn’t handle their pitcher’s liners. If she couldn’t hit, what chance did amateurs like us have?
Finally, in the top of the third, it was my turn to bat.
“Well then, here I go.”
“Uuka! Hit it! If you don’t, you’re dead!”
The captain’s stress was clearly past its breaking point. What had her so agitated?
“You okay? That’s not like you.”
Wearing my helmet, I asked her.
“Ugh, those jerks keep staring at my legs and butt.”
“…Sooo, I wonder why that could be.”
Oh crap. If she finds out, I’m dead.
I fled to the batter’s box before she could figure it out.
“Let’s do this.”
As I stepped up to bat, the catcher glared at me with murder in his eyes.
“You scumbag.”
“Huh? Uh… Excuse me?”
“Don’t act clueless, you dirtbag among dirtbags.”
“Whoa, harsh.”
Even my dad never called me that…
“Hurry up and take your stance! Nikaidou-san’s waiting!”
“Y-Yeah, right.”
My brain almost short-circuited for a moment, but I somehow composed myself.
Now then.
So far, Nikaidou had relied solely on his fastball—an impressively straightforward approach.
However, his control was lacking. While he could throw unhittable pitches on occasion, many landed right down the middle.
“Here we go, Uuka!”
His arm began its motion. The ball came slightly earlier than I anticipated.
“Hit it, Ukaaa!”
“Reiii!”
Leave it to me, my friend. I swung my bat… or at least, I thought I did.
“Whaaat?!”
The ball seemed to curve unnaturally… Its trajectory—unbelievable.
“The chasing fastball of love?!”
Over the plate, the ball veered at a sharp angle.
“No way! What the hell?!”
My friend’s shout echoed.
Could it be… that the hours of pitching had infused the ball with my senior’s love?
“…Gaaah!!”
Direct hit. Right at my… uh, sensitive area.
“Rei! Watch out! Uuka’s… uh… pollen sacs!”
Excuse me, what now? What kind of anatomy is he imagining?! I didn’t have the luxury to retort.
“…Sorry, Uuka. You okay?”
As I struggled to stay upright, Nikaidou rushed over from the mound.
“Heh, I’m fine. Looks like your perfect game is over, though.”
“Ha! You’ve got guts, I’ll give you that.”
“Of course. Besides, the next batter is…”
My senior came running from the bench.
Worry creased her face, as if blaming herself.
“Rei-kun?! Are you alright?!”
I hesitated for a moment, unsure of what to say. But then again, there was only one thing I wanted to convey.
“Senpai! The rest is up to you! Let’s win this together!”
Giving her a thumbs-up, I limped to first base. Running was out of the question.
“…I’ll do it, Rei-kun. I’ll hit it.”
Yes. That’s how I wanted her to be—graceful, composed.
Having done all I could, I stepped off to first base.
As the game progressed, tension mounted, only for an unexpected twist to strike the team: five players suddenly clutching their stomachs in agony.
“This… this is the work of Seiro Pills!”
The strongest laxative ever made.
Someone had sabotaged us—but who?!
