Episode 11: Resolution. That Day, We Drank with Determination
A resolution meeting—it sounds dignified, but for any university student, it’s clear that it’s just an excuse to use club funds to drink. Nothing more than a simple drinking party.
“Come on, Utsuka, drink up, drink up!”
At our go-to izakaya, one train stop from school, six of us were seated on the tatami mats. Two hours in, and the club president was starting to feel the effects.
“I am drinking. But honestly, today’s turnout is pretty small, huh?”
“Well, there’re only eight of us active right now. Even if you count Shion, that makes nine. Getting five of us together is a miracle as it is.”
“Mari-ri President~! Pat my head, pleeease!”
“Alright, alright, give me a sec… Okay, there, there.”
The president seemed busy. Sunabashi finally made his drinking debut, huh? Well, considering how small the group is today, I get why he came along.
At the table were me, the president, a senior, Sunabashi… uh, who else?
I stared at the only person whose name I couldn’t recall.
“Utsuka-kun! That’s so mean! I’m Keyama! Takeshi! Got it? And stop narrating your thoughts out loud!”
“Uh, yeah? I knew that. What do you mean, ‘narrating’? Keyama, you’re weird.”
“That’s the harshest insult you can throw at an otaku!”
“Sorry, sorry. You’re pretty lively, huh?”
I must be a bit drunk myself. Three beers in, and I’m feeling full. Suddenly, my arm was tugged.
“What’s up?”
“…Hmm.”
Senior puffed her cheeks out like a chipmunk, her face flushed red in what seemed to be an attempt to express irritation.
“I’ve been wondering—why don’t you ever call me by my first name?”
“Whoa, that’s… out of nowhere.”
I had a feeling she’d bring it up eventually, but I didn’t expect it to be now.
“Um, Senior? Are you okay? Your eyes look kind of… glazed over.”
“Hmph. You won’t even call me by my name, but you’re worried about me?”
With that, she rested her head on my shoulder. Her actions and words didn’t quite match up.
“You’re drunk, aren’t you?”
“I’m not drunk.”
Not drunk? Yeah, right. That’s a confirmed drunk. Still, back to the topic at hand…
“We never figured out who the culprit was, huh.”
The atmosphere turned heavy. No surprise there. For the past three days, we hadn’t found any leads, and now we were here, on the eve of the sports festival.
Who could it be? How did they do it?
The mystery remained unsolved, but at least the tennis club hadn’t faced any further incidents. That was a small mercy.
Meanwhile, the soccer club wasn’t so lucky. Their locker room was bombarded with fermented stink bombs made of kusaya and natto, and their key players slipped on banana peels and got injured.
“Utsuka!”
“Yes?”
“Do a party trick.”
“Huh!?”
“It’s a drinking party! Don’t bring everyone down with gloomy talk! Imagine jerking off and suddenly having a naked fifty-year-old granny pop up on your screen. That’d ruin your life, right? It’d give you ED!”
What is he even talking about? For the record, what bothers me more is the ridiculously tiny “X” button on the corner of those ads.
“That’s right! That’s right!”
And Sunabashi. Stop agreeing with the president on everything. Wait a minute—he hasn’t ordered any drinks, has he?
“Mari-ri, there’s no need to worry about that.”
“Huh? Senior?”
I didn’t expect her to come to my rescue.
“If that happens, I’ll help you out.”
She said this with a smug expression. Cute, admittedly.
Oh, no. I’m probably doomed to some kind of social death soon.
“Utsuka-kun… Could it be that you and she are in that kind of relationship?”
“No, we’re not. At least… not yet.”
I was still hanging on by a thread. For now, at least, we hadn’t crossed any lines.
“Damn you, normie! Go explode already!”
The chaos lasted another hour. Around 10 PM, we called it a night.
I helped the drunken senior—more like carried her—and walked her home.
The president carried Sunabashi, who wasn’t even drunk but had somehow passed out.
And the remaining member quietly emitted an air of melancholy.
We each headed our separate ways.
“Senior, we’re here. This is your apartment.”
After a twenty-minute walk, we reached her building.
“Yes, we’re here.”
“Um, aren’t you going in?”
Senior stood outside, looking at the building but refusing to enter.
“Tomorrow’s the sports festival. Wouldn’t it be better to rest in your room?”
“But I haven’t slept with you for the past three days. How am I supposed to recover like this?”
Drunk and clinging to my arm like a kitten, she refused to let go.
“Well, uh… would you like to stay over? At my place?”
“Yes. Your room will do.”
“Okay, but… wait! Give me a minute!”
I’d left that adult video on my desk! If she sees it, I’m doomed. And it’s not even mine—it’s a prized loan from Akira. If anything happens to it… Well, I’d better prepare to lose a finger.
“Are you hiding something?”
Her eyes glinted menacingly. She was definitely suspicious.
“It’s nothing, really! Just something trivial…”
“Then I don’t need to wait, do I?”
Her smile was terrifyingly authoritative. Lying wasn’t going to work. Even if I said the room was messy, she’d just offer to help clean.
“Fine… I have nothing to hide!”
With a resolve to accept whatever punishment awaited, I let her into the room.
“So… what’s this?”
Standing in the middle of my tiny studio apartment, Senior held up the offending item and gave me a cold stare.
“…An adult video.”
Sitting cross-legged on the floor, I answered, my voice flat. The hard flooring wasn’t helping.
“Read the title out loud.”
This was hell. Absolute hell. But I had no choice.
“Now.”
“Afternoon Affair of a Married Teacher: The Dungeon of Forbidden Desires.”
Oh, why are AV titles always so outrageous?
“Is this what you’re into?”
“I don’t dislike it. But! It’s purely fiction! That actress doesn’t even hold a candle to you, Senior!”
I hastily added, “Metaphorically speaking, of course! No connection to the actual content!”
“I see. I’ll put this away. You should take a bath. Tomorrow’s an early day, isn’t it?”
“Yes! Excuse me!”
Relieved that it wasn’t destroyed, I grabbed a change of clothes and hurried to the bathroom.
Just as I began to relax in the bath, a soft sensation pressed against my back.
“I’ll wash your body for you.”
“Wha—!?”
When I turned, I saw Senior, her body wrapped in a towel, cheeks flushed, and glasses perched on her nose.
Eventually, she left, but not before making her intentions clear. As we sat on my bed later, Senior leaned closer.
“What’s on your mind, Rei?”
“I was just… having an inappropriate thought.”
“Then let’s make it happen.”
“Eh? W-wait!”
“Just kidding. You need to fall for me first, after all.”
“That’s fair.”
But something struck me.
“Senior! I need to make a call!”
“What’s going on?”
“We never considered the possibility of a culprit within the tennis club.”
If that’s true… winning tomorrow might be impossible.
