Relentlessly Approaching the Poison-Tongued and Indifferent Beauty to Tickle the Cutesy Reactions out of her [Dropped] - Chapter 4 - A Good Reason
After finishing saying what she needed to, Koyuki let out a sigh of relief. Finally reaching out for a doughnut, she began to nibble on it slowly.
“Somehow it throws me off balance… you’re a strange person,” she said.
“Yeah, I get that a lot.”
“I suppose.”
Koyuki said incredulously, curling her perfectly shaped lips into a teasing smile.
“It’s impossible for someone like you, a weirdo, to have tea with me. Consider it an honor,” she added.
“No, really, it’s an honor. I’m happy to hear you say, ‘I’m glad to have tea with Sasahara-kun.'”
“I didn’t say that! Absolutely not!?” She frantically denied it, but her reddened ears betrayed her reaction.
After screaming for a while, Koyuki seemed to realize that she had attracted the attention of other customers. She shrank immediately and glared at Naoya, who was sipping his coffee, with a resentful look.
“Really, what kind of ears do you have… I never said anything like that…”
“Well, I can easily understand your true feelings, Shirogane-san,” Naoya replied calmly.
It wasn’t difficult to gauge Koyuki’s true intentions. Anyone could do it by paying close attention to the accent of her words, the movements of her gaze, and her gestures, such as running her fingers through her hair.
“Really…? That’s suspicious,” Koyuki said, staring at Naoya with a serious look before suddenly breaking into a mischievous smile. She took out a hundred yen coin from her wallet, tossed it in the air and then caught it midway. She then held out both hands in fists in front of Naoya.
“Okay, here’s a question for you. Which hand is the coin in?”
“It’s on your knee, right?”
“…..Correct.”
Koyuki opened both hands with a look of exasperation.
As Naoya said, there was nothing in her hands. She then picked up the coin from her knee and looked at Naoya with eyes full of disbelief.
“You really do have a good intuition… Come to think of it, you also saw through the lie about that guy being a model scout yesterday. Are you a detective or something?”
“A high school detective is only a thing in anime and games. I’m just an ordinary high school student.”
“An ordinary high school student can’t do such tricks.”
Koyuki continued to look at him suspiciously.
Although it wasn’t the attitude of a beneficiary, Naoya simply shrugged it off.
“Well, I get asked that a lot. ‘What kind of special training have you gone through?’…”
“I guess it’s not that exaggerated.”
Naoya chuckled lightly.
“It’s nothing worth hiding, really. Well, actually… When I was a kid, my mother fell seriously ill. She was bedridden for a while.”
“Eh?” Koyuki gasped, surprised by the unexpected disclosure.
It happened when Naoya was six years old. One day, his mother suddenly collapsed and she was admitted to the hospital. She ended up being bedridden for most of the day, connected to a respirator and many tubes, and she was unable to communicate.
Despite this, Naoya visited her room every day and nursed her. He desperately focused on his mother’s facial expressions, trying to decipher what she wanted.
He learned to read what she wanted from her gaze and sensed her pain from how often she moved.
“Well, there wasn’t much a kid could do, but by repeating that, I naturally learned how to understand what people wanted to say,” he explained.
“For your mother’s sake huh.”
Koyuki covered her mouth and her eyes widened in disbelief.
Then she asked hesitantly, “Um, how is your mother doing now?”
“… She’s in a faraway place,” Naoya replied nonchalantly.
“Wh-what?” Koyuki’s face turned pale.
“Probably in the Caribbean sea, or somewhere else.”
“Ehh?!”
“I wonder what she is thinking right now. Her life flashed before her, but she made a miraculous recovery. Since then she is still as lively as ever. She’s with my dad on a business trip overseas.” Naoya explained.
Although his mother was told that she would have a serious backlash after going through it. She miraculously recovered and became healthier than she was before she fell ill.
Thanks to that, his parents are currently enjoying a trip overseas as a couple. Naoya judged that it was okay for them to leave him behind since he had become a high school student.
He receives an email from his parents every month with good news about his mother’s well-being, but they also attached their photos of them acting as a loving couple, making him feel both relieved and complicated as a son.
Upon hearing this, Koyuki bites down on the donut with frustration.
“It’s just too confusing…!” she exclaimed.
“Haha, yeah, I hear that a lot,” Naoyuki replied, knowing it’s a classic joke.
