- Chapter 13 - Koyuki's Weakness
The same day during the lunch break, Naoya and Koyuki were sitting together in the courtyard.
The sky was clear, and a gentle atmosphere filled the courtyard. Students were spreading out leisure sheets all over the lawn and spending their time eating lunch, playing games, and doing their own things.
This school had a decent entrance exam score, but was known for its free-spirited school culture. Thanks to that, the number of students was unusually large, and there were many places to relax.
Looking around the bustling courtyard, Koyuki tilted her head quizzically and asked, “Oh, where are Natsume-san and the others?”
“Oh, they might be somewhere else, enjoying their time together,” Naoya replied.
We had promised to eat lunch together on their way to school this morning. Of course, at that time, Yui and Tatsumi were also with them. But Naoya shrugged his shoulders lightly as he wanted to spend this valuable time alone with Koyuki.
“I thought it would be better for Shirogane-san to take it easy at lunchtime. I contacted them earlier and asked them to take a break and enjoy their time together.”
“Why…again? Oh well, whatever,” Koyuki said, giving Naoya a mischievous smile.
“So you wanted to be alone with me? Fufu, that’s kind of cute,” Koyuki teased.
“I won’t deny that, but…” Naoya trailed off, trying to hide his embarrassment.
Koyuki immediately recoiled and made a sour face.
“Don’t nod so seriously like that, will you?”
She had been aware of it since yesterday, but it seemed she wasn’t used to being counterattacked. Naoya smiled wryly at Koyuki’s awkwardness.
“Well, Shirogane-san is shy around strangers. I thought if Yui and the others were there, she would get nervous and not be able to eat her lunch properly.”
“……”
At that moment, Koyuki’s face froze in deep realization. It was clear she was once again left completely baffled as he showed her that he could see through all her acts.
But she quickly regained her composure and flashed a cool smile.
“…Haha, that’s a funny joke. The perfect me, shy around strangers? That’s such a childish attribute—”
“Oh, Yui. Hey, you want to eat lunch together after all?” Naoya interrupted, turning his attention to someone behind Koyuki.
“Eeek…h-hi, Natsume-san…oh, huh?” Koyuki said, shrinking and turning around quickly.
But of course, Yui wasn’t there. Koyuki tilted her head in confusion, then suddenly realized something and turned to Naoya.
“Y-You deceived me…!? How cowardly!”
“It’s cute how you fell for such an obvious trick…”
Koyuki let out a small sigh. As a result, her momentum faded, and she shrunk down.
“Ugh…I’ll just say it…I’m not very good at talking to people…uhh…”
“Honesty is a good thing.”
Noya patted her on the shoulder. They then moved to the shade of a tree and sat side by side on a vacant bench. Then, they opened their lunch boxes and Koyuki began to talk bit by bit about her past.
“Since I was little, I’ve always been able to do anything, you know? Studying, sports, anything.”
“Oh, I see. You really are amazing, Shiragane-san.”
“Yeah… but there were also problems.”
Koyuki had a dark look on her face as she nibbled at the rolled omelet.
“Everyone praised me for being amazing. But I didn’t really understand why they said that. Being ‘able to do it’ was normal for me.”
“You probably said the exact same thing to them, didn’t you?”
“Yeah… everyone made a weird face at that time.”
Koyuki lowered her eyebrows and looked crestfallen. It was a scene that was vivid in Naoya’s mind.
“I kept repeating things like that, and it made me scared to talk to people… I was afraid that I would fail again.”
“But you’re talking to me normally, right? Like this.”
“Well, that’s because you’re…”
Koyuki thought for a moment, then looked down at the lunch box on her lap and muttered,
“You’re someone I don’t have to pretend around. That’s why… maybe I can relax and talk to you.”
“I see. I’m honored if you feel that way.”
Naoya replied with a smile. Although it was a skill he had acquired by taking care of his bedridden mother, he felt glad that he could be there for her, who couldn’t be honest with others.
