- Chapter 10 - Even if there is a childhood friend, I won't back down!
Looking back, there stood a single female student.
Her chestnut-colored hair stretched down to her shoulders, and her slender legs extended from her short skirt. Overall a healthy figure, her slightly slanted, large eyes gave off an impression of liveliness.
Seeing the girl’s face, Naoya loosened his cheeks. She was someone he was familiar with.
“Hey Yui, good morning.”
“Good mornin’! Wait, why are you with Shirogane-san so early in the morning?!”
Approaching with a light tone, Yui was surprised to see Koyuki standing alongside Naoya.
As she compared Naoya’s and Koyuki’s faces in a panic, she asked,
“Huh, why are you with Shirogane-san? What’s the connection?!”
“We’ve become friends since yesterday for various reasons.”
“Eh?… Why would you become friends with such an eccentric person… Oh, good morning Shirogane-san.”
“Yes, good morning.”
Koyuki awkwardly returned the greeting.
Although there was some sort of wall, it wasn’t like she was meeting a stranger.
Perplexed by the strange distance, Naoya clapped his hands to divert their attention.
“Speaking of which, Yui is in class 3, right? You’re in the same class as Shirogane-san.”
“Yep, yep. We haven’t talked much though.”
“…Right.”
Koyuki nodded slightly and glanced at Naoya.
Her smile was elegant, but there was an implicit meaning behind that smile.
“By the way, um… Are Sasahara-kun and Natsume-san friends?”
“We’re not just friends, we’re childhood friends.”
“Yeah, we’ve been together since kindergarten, so we’re best friends by nature.”
As Naoya explained, Yui also nodded with a smile.
Yui Natsume, a second-year student at Otsuki Academy.
For Naoya, she was a childhood friend of over ten years. They were even family friends who occasionally had dinner together because they lived in the same neighborhood.
“I see… That’s how it is.”
Koyuki smiled faintly as she heard him explaining about their relationship.
Suddenly, the air turned chilly. A wall had been erected between Naoya and her that wasn’t there just a moment ago… That’s what it felt like to him.
“Oh, it’s okay, Shirogane-san,” said Naoya, indicating Yui and spoke cheerfully. “She’s just a childhood friend. I only have eyes for you, Shirogane-san—”
“Stop!!”
“Mugyu—?!”
Koyuki interrupted him by covering his mouth with her hand.
Naoya was taken aback and could only stare in confusion.
It was clear as day that Koyuki was jealous of Yui. Naoya had been trying to alleviate her worries, but her reaction was unexpected.
Naoya was good at reading people’s emotions, and he usually deduced their reasons from the situation. But this time, he couldn’t make sense of her reaction.
Meanwhile, Koyuki whispered to Naoya in a scolding tone, “You have no sense of delicacy…! Even if you don’t care, what if Natsume-san happens to like you? It would hurt her! That’s not okay!”
“If Yui were to—? No, that’s impossible,” Naoya responded.
“Why not? It’s not like there’s no possibility since she’s your childhood friend.”
Although her argument lacked any real evidence, Koyuki was serious about it.
But Naoya thought to himself, ‘Huh… did she get mad at me for the sake of being my provisional love rival…? That’s so cute…’
His affection for her continued to rise when he saw her getting worried for him.
Ignoring Naoya’s dazed expression, Koyuki confronted him, “Are you even listening!?”
Meanwhile, Yui, who was watching this scene transpire, was half-smiling while seeing them bickering.
Of course, standing right next to them, she could hear their conversation perfectly.
“Sorry to interrupt while you’re busy, but—”
“Good morning!”
Then another male student approached them. He was wearing his uniform loosely and his hair was dyed brown. He was a slightly frivolous-looking boy who had been with Naoya during lunch yesterday. He looked at Naoya and Koyuki and his eyes widened in surprise.
“Wow, you guys have really gotten close. That’s amazing…”
“Yeah, that’s my charisma.”
“No, I’m not complimenting you. I’m talking about Shirogane-san, who’s hanging out with you.”
“Umm… Who is he?”
Koyuki tilted her head in confusion as she saw the appearance of a new person.
During yesterday’s lunch break, when she stopped Naoya, she should have noticed that he was standing right beside him… but she doesn’t seem to remember at all.
Kono didn’t mind her lack of attention and cheerfully introduced himself
“My name is Tatsumi Kono from class 1. Nice to meet you, Shirogane-san.”
“He is also my childhood friend and boyfriend.”
“Huh, is that so… wait, boyfriend?”
Koyuki’s eyes widened at the words spoken by Yui.
Natsume Yui, Tatsumi Kono, and Naoya Sasahara were in fact childhood friends.
“We’re all childhood friends, and these two are dating,” Naoya explained.
“Oh, I see… I see.”
Koyuki nodded her head several times as she finally understood the situation.
The wall that was just created between them has now disappeared, and the air felt relaxed in an instant.
Thanks to that, Naoya’s expression naturally softened as well.
“…Are you feeling better now?”
“Huh? What are you talking about? Whatever kind of relationship you have with other girls, it has nothing to do with me. Don’t be conceited.”
Koyuki tried to act aloof.
Meanwhile, Yui and Tatsumi exchange glances with each other quietly.
