“Um, she seems to be uncomfortable, maybe you should stop?”

“Huh? Who are you…?”

“Ah…”

At Akaneya Bookstore where Naoya worked, two people were apparently having a dispute outside while he was holding a broom in his hand.

One of them was a girl, wearing the uniform of the high school that Naoya attends, with silver hair that extended down to her waist, giving her a distinctly non-Japanese appearance. Although her face couldn’t be clearly seen from the back, it was clear that she was confused.

The one approaching her was a man in a suit. He had dyed his hair in a flashy color and was wearing several piercings on his ears. He looked like a shady pick-up artist no matter from any angle you look at him.

So without hesitation, Naoya immediately stepped in between them, protecting the girl from the man. He could feel her holding her breath behind him, but he ignored it for now.

When he glared at the man straight on, the man was caught off guard and his eyes widened. Then he put on a forced smile and said, “Haha… I don’t know what you’re misunderstanding, but I’m not a suspicious person.”

Saying that, the man took out his business card. It had a title on it that read that he was a director of an entertainment agency, which seemed like a plausible position.

“We’re actually looking for a model. I’m sure she’d be a hit—”

“That’s a lie.”

“Huh?”

“No matter how much humans try to conceal their true feelings, their physiological responses can’t be suppressed.”

Naoya stared intently at the man. His pupils dilated slightly, and his voice rose when he started talking about the model job. Other details, such as his breathing rhythm, sweating, and movements of his lips… all of them were indicating that the man was lying.

“Talking about being a model is just a lie, right? Making such a small prop… Is your success rate with picking up women that low?”

“Huh… You’re getting cocky just because you think you’re so great?!”

The man grabbed Naoya’s collar, causing a small scream to be heard from behind.

“Don’t get cheeky with me, kid. Do you want to get hurt?”

“I don’t have that kind of hobby… By the way, do you know that there’s a surveillance camera in front of our store?”

Naoya pointed to the sign of the Akaneya Bookstore, where a small surveillance camera was installed, pointing its lens directly at them.

“If you punch me here, I’ll run to the police station with the surveillance footage. If that’s okay with you, go ahead.”

“…Tch!” 

The man pushed Naoya and quickly walked away. It seems he didn’t realize that it was fake, which was installed for security purposes. Naoya let out a sigh of relief, but then…

“Um, excuse me…”

“Oh, it’s okay now.”

He felt a presence behind him, so Naoya turned around, but then a husky voice came from inside of the store.

“Hey, Sasahara-kun! It’s sudden, but could you deliver something for me? There’s a TV show I want to watch!”

“Ah… Sure, I’ll go now! Be careful on your way home!”

“Ah…!”

In the end, without even checking the other person’s face, Naoya went back to work. Feeling a light sense of satisfaction like “I did something good.”

“Sasahara-kun… huh?”

The girl in question repeated his name and tightly held both hands in front of her chest… At that time, he had no idea that this small involvement with the girl would change his life.
