- Episode 28 - Chatting about the Labyrinth of the Moon’s Reflection
I open the door.
I’m very familiar with Lorraine’s house. It’s where I’ve been sleeping. As a favor, Lorraine lets me stay at her house because I can’t stay at ordinary inns. It’s been ten years since she started living here. It was a really long time ago, but sometimes it seems like it was just recently. I’ve known her for so long that I could say we have a close relationship. She’s my best friend.
The door to her house is usually unlocked, and today is no different. No matter how you look at it, it’s the house of an adult woman. I think she’s too careless, but that’s just how she is. Basically, Lorraine lives a self-indulgent and lazy life. That’s why she is so careless about many things, including locking the door. But that’s not the only reason. She also has the skills to fight. Who in the world would think of attacking a silver-class sorceress? She knows that. She knows that no matter what kind of thugs come at her, she is in no danger. Yes, she knows, and that’s why she’s so careless.
I also believe that Lorraine is not in danger. She has the strength to fight. And that’s why… It’s why…?
Right, that’s why, even if a ghoul gets in, she’ll be fine…
◇◆◇◆◇
“…Rentt? You’re back.”
She must have heard me come into the room. Along with the sound of clothes rustling, I hear Lorraine’s intelligent and somewhat seductive voice. Her voice sounds sleepy, but it’s not blunt, it’s gentle and calm. I respond as I always do.
“…Y- yeah…”
“I see. You said you were going to check out the Labyrinth of the Moon’s Reflection today. Did you find the dragon?”
“…N- no…”
While replying to the small talk, I gradually approach Lorraine. As I get closer, I see Lorraine sitting on the sofa, leaning against it. When I look into her eyes, I see her with a thick book on her lap, unyieldingly looking at me with a kind gaze. It gives me a strange feeling. After all, I’m a ghoul. I’m not a human being, I’m the enemy of humanity… And yet, she is…
“…? Rentt, what’s wrong…? You don’t seem to be talking much. Are you still shocked that the dragon is gone?”
“No, I’m not… I’m… happy…” I say, almost at Lorraine’s side. If I reached out to touch her, I could. That’s how close I am. I stare blankly at Lorraine’s face. As usual, her hair is pulled up in a messy bun and she’s wearing only a loose robe. But even so, there’s a certain undeniable charm about her… Charm… What kind of charm? It’s…
“Happy? Did something good hap–” Lorraine asks me, but before she can finish her sentence, I hug her.
◇◆◇◆◇
“…?! R-Rentt… What in the world are you…? Are you drunk…? No, undead shouldn’t be able to get drunk…” she mutters to herself, her voice sounding more upbeat than usual, and I also feel that she’s prettier than usual. Her skin is a bit flushed and sweaty, and I can smell Lorraine’s gentle scent in the dusty air.
I feel a twinge of dizziness at the scent as I hold Lorraine in my arms and say, “Lor…raine… I…”
“Y- yes…? What is it, Rentt?”
I feel like I was going to say something. Something important. But little by little, the thought disappears as if it’s being replaced by something else. My vision turns red, and confusion fills my mind. And the feeling I get from Lorraine’s scent is that…
…It smells so good.
As soon as I think that, I open my mouth, shift Lorraine’s robe off of her shoulder, and sink my teeth into her white skin.
“…?!”
Lorraine, however, does not scream. No sound comes out, as if she’s holding it back in her throat. Her body is tense, and she seems to be shaking with pain, but she doesn’t scream. If she screamed, it would be heard outside, and someone would come. The city of Malt is not a bad place to live. If there was any hint of an incident, someone would intervene. I’m sure she’s doing this with that in mind.
Yes, Lorraine must be in pain, but she’s holding back. I sink my teeth further into her shoulder, feeling that this makes her flesh taste even better. Then, the blood seeps into my throat, moistening it.
Ah, it’s so delicious. I’ve never had a drink like this before in my life. The sweet sensation makes it seem like the twenty year old sake I once drank was just muddy water. I want to drink more. More, more, more…
That’s what goes through my mind as I suck Lorraine’s blood.
“…Uh- ah- Re… Rentt… you…”
I can hear Lorraine’s voice, but I don’t feel like stopping. And I wonder, if the blood tastes so good, what about the flesh? Maybe it’ll taste like something out of this world.
I put strength into my jaws, and then…
…I tear into it.
“…Ah!”
I take a bite out of Lorraine’s shoulder flesh. It’s only a small amount, no more than the tip of a pinky finger. But the taste is just as wonderful as I imagined it would be… I savor it, chewing it over and over again. It’s the kind of taste that makes me want to keep it in my mouth forever. But even so, the amount is too small, so the happiness soon passes. As I swallow, I feel thirsty again. I have to quench it, so I turn around.
“…Rentt… You’re still there, aren’t you?” Lorraine asks, staring straight at me, blood spilling from her shoulder.
…? Rentt. That’s my name. What do you mean, am I here? I’m right here, aren’t I? I’m here, so give me some of your blood.
I pause for a moment, and then I charge at Lorraine again. But Lorraine nods at my reaction.
“If you’re still there… then sleep now…!” she shouts, pointing her palm at me. By the time I sense the magic power converging in front of it, it’s too late. A flaming bullet shoots out of it, towards me.
The silver-class mage’s power blows me away and I hit the wall with full force. Then, little by little, I fall to the ground and my consciousness begins to fade. Lorraine runs up to me in a panic and touches my cheek.
“…Okay, you’re alive. Anyway, I’ll ask you to apologize when you wake up.” she says, casting a sleep spell, and my consciousness starts to fade away faster.
Before I completely lose consciousness, I hear Lorraine speak into my ear.
“…It’s alright if you don’t remember this, but if you’re going to attack me, at least do it when you’re sober. Whenever you want to eat me, I’m here…”
While my consciousness wanes, I wonder if I’m hearing things as I feel a strange power fill my body.
