The Reincarnated Minister's Second Daughter Wants To Live A Happy Life - Chapter 17
Chapter 17
At 3pm on the dot, the trio finished doing their own samples.
Gabriel stretched his arms after. He felt too tired just by doing a sample sports-feature article. How much more if he was to compete in the schools’ conference, where he is to meet all sorts of intelligent students?
Gabriel shook his head. His only goal now was to be part of the school’s journalism club, and… he turned his head to Daisy.
‘To get closer to her.’
He happily smiled as he imagined how happy he would be if his relationship with Daisy improved. But in the midst of him happily imagining, he felt a chill on his spine. He rubbed his arms when he felt goosebumps, inadvertently seeing Caspian looking at him.
Gabriel flinched and immediately avoided his gaze.
‘Seriously, why are you so scary?’
Gabriel frowned and tried to look at Caspian with a menacing look, but Caspian was no longer looking at him. Gabriel widened his eyes as he watched the scene in front of him.
Caspian gently looked at Daisy as he helped her put the books on the bookshelf. His eyes were slightly smiling as if he didn’t glare at Gabriel earlier. His voice was low and soft as he talked to Daisy.
“I’m glad we could finish our sample in time. I don’t think our professor is that kind if we submitted late, even if this is only a sample.”
“I think so too.”
Caspian smiled as he replied in a soft voice to Daisy. His eyes had a soft look on them. Gabriel almost went blind with how dazzling his expression now is.
“Let me carry that for you.”
“Oh, thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
Bruh, she can lift the book just fine by herself! What is this, an idol drama in front of me?
Gabriel almost wanted to open his mouth and shout at Caspian had it not been for him being scared of Caspian.
Seemingly aware of Gabriel’s thought, Caspian looked straight at his eyes just in time for Gabriel was admiring Daisy. Gabriel flinched for the umpteenth time this day because of Caspian’s stare.
Caspian’s eyes looked at Gabriel as if telling him, Get lost.
Gabriel bowed his head with his lips protruding into an ugly pout. He quickly organized his things. He put the sample folder above it and his bag on his back. He waited for Daisy and Caspian to finish with a bored expression on his face.
Once they finished, Daisy approached him and asked him about his stomach ache earlier.
“I am feeling much better now. Thank you for worrying about me.”
“It’s nothing. We are classmates.”
“Yes, classmates, hehe.”
Gabriel widely smiled as Daisy talked to him and beckoned him to go to their professor and submit their samples.
Behind them, Caspian was leisurely walking and constantly looking at the two figures walking in front of him. They are very friendly with each other, occasionally having small talks with each other, such as now.
“What do you think of the basketball team? They’re cool, right?”
“Hmm, their shooting skills are not bad.”
“Hah! If you see me play basketball, I bet you won’t be able to think that they are good enough to play with me. Back in my high school, I was the MVP.”
“Really? Then, I am the campus belle. How’s that?”
“I will believe that, even if you say it is a lie.”
“You’re like ice cream – very smooth talker.”
“Oh, am I? Then, thank you. I shall be like ice cream for the rest of my life.”
“But that means that you’re not true with your words.”
“How could that be possible? Everything I said was the truth and only the truth!”
“… Okay, as you say.”
“Ey, you really don’t look like you believe me at all.”
“…”
Daisy no longer answered him. But even so, Caspian could feel that she was not annoyed with Gabriel at all. If there is a word to describe what he saw she was feeling right now, it is amusement. He thought that Daisy was only amused by Gabriel.
The Daisy now was a bit different from the past; she still makes that same expression when she is amused. Caspian once worked as the guard of one of the imperial balls held inside the Imperial Palace.
Daisy was known as the ‘Empire’s Silent Beauty,’ and she upholds that title wherever she goes. What was most striking with her appearance was her pair of clear, brown eyes. When he saw that, Caspian thought that it was the purest pair of eyes he had ever seen in his entire life.
He thought that Daisy would be cold to everyone since she was the Empire’s Silent Beauty. But not only she laughed lightly when something was funny, but her eyes brightened whenever something was amusing to her. The present Daisy had that same expression on her face at this moment.
Caspian laughed to himself. What’s the use of remembering all this when the person on the topic doesn’t remember that at all?
In front of him, Daisy was genuinely amused by Gabriel. When they walked out of the library, she thought that he was pouting, though he looked very ugly with that expression on. Daisy shook her head.
Several minutes after walking, they arrived at the faculty and searched for their professor. When he saw them, his initially frowning face turned to delight. He had a hunch that these kids wouldn’t disappoint him.
“I just thought you’d be able to do this in such a short time.”
“You flatter us, professor.”
Daisy smiled at the professor, which made him even happier. He gleefully opened their sample and nodded his head.
“Let me talk this with the head of the club, then I will call for you and tell you the results.”
“Yes, professor.”
“But I think this is good enough. You just wait until I call you again, alright.”
“Yes. Thank you, professor.”
“Hmm, you can go back now.”
The professor happily sat down on his chair as he earnestly read their samples. He was occasionally nodding his head and smiling.
Walking out of the faculty, the chilly wind blew.
Daisy looked at the two guys behind her.
“Uhm… I will go first.”
“Take care on your way back.”
“You too.”
Before Gabriel could tell Daisy his prepared long string of sweet words of goodbye, Caspian beat him to it and let Daisy go just like that. He wanted to at least say goodbye, but Daisy was already walking away quickly. In no time, she became a tiny dot in the distance. Gabriel was now officially pissed.
Gabriel turned his head to Caspian, who was preparing to return to their dormitory in the opposite direction. He called his name, so he stopped walking.
“Caspian Nixon.”
Caspian only looked at him as he stopped. Gabriel approached him.
“Let’s go together.”
Caspian raised his eyebrows at his unexpected words. He was confused, but since they were going in the same direction, it didn’t really matter.
Caspian continued walking with Gabriel beside him. Somehow, the air was awkward, but Caspian didn’t seem to mind it. More than that, he was thinking about what he should have for dinner. Since the two guys (Nathan and Marco) were out, he might as well ask them to bring back something to eat.
Amid their walk, Gabriel opened his mouth.
“What do you think?”
“… What?”
“Do you think our sample would be approved by the journalism club?”
“Huh?”
For the first time, Caspian wondered if Gabriel was a girl dressing up as a boy.
“I do think we can, right?”
“Get straight to the point.”
Caspian couldn’t take it anymore and told him to get straight to the point.
Gabriel stopped walking and raised his head. But he didn’t look at Caspian and only looked at the sky. It was as if he was reminiscing about something, but Caspian thought he was being weird instead.
“Do you think we lived our past lives?”
“…”
Caspian pursed his lips.
Earlier in the day, Gabriel talked about the history of their school, which was coincidentally related to the Quiet Noises. Caspian didn’t want to admit it, but he was pretty scared of what would happen now that someone wanted to know what happened during that time. It wasn’t only that, but he was afraid of the truth he was avoiding.
Caspian resumed his silence and pursed his lips into a tight line.
Objectively speaking, Gabriel wasn’t wrong to think that there was this thing called ‘previous lives,’ but he might think that Caspian was crazy if he told him that. More than being amazed that Caspian could remember his past life, Gabriel might think that he must have gone crazy for knowing that.
Of course, Caspian also wished that people he cherished would remember their past – even just a little would suffice.
“If we have lived our previous lives, do you think I lived as a good person? A good person that someone was willing to die with me?”
Caspian looked at the sky as Gabriel and didn’t answer.
The wind was cold, but their two figures were in great harmony – both in pain, both in distress.
