There are three main resources we adventurers use in our battles against monsters.
First is magical power.
Second is magic itself.
And third, skills.
“Ugh… I won’t lose!”
Magical power is the foundation of everything. It strengthens the body and activates magic and skills. If it runs out, it’s essentially game over.
Then there are two powers that magical power brings forth.
One of them is magic, which is strictly theoretical.
Magic is divided into attributes: fire, earth, water, and wind. The process of casting magic involves giving an attribute to the otherwise neutral magical power, converting it into elemental magical power, and then releasing this power from the body to cast the spell.
However, merely releasing elemental magical power results in only weak, basic magic.
To advance beyond basic magic, its form must be changed. This requires a magic circle.
Releasing it through a magic circle changes the nature of the basic magic, allowing for increased output or altered forms.
Magic that can only manifest within the precise configurations of a magic circle.
In contrast, the other power brought forth by magical power is skills, which are diverse.
Skills are powers etched into the soul, and are activated simply by willing it and using magical power. Their effects are varied and complex.
For instance, my “Light Weapon” and “Kannon Bodhisattva” are classified as skills.
Primarily, I’m proficient in overpowering opponents with a variety of skills.
I use regular magical power and magic, too.
“Aaaaaaaahhhh!!!”
This is the state of power for adventurers.
Currently, Momoha, who is fervently fighting in front of me, seems to prefer a style that relies on magical power and skills rather than magic.
It’s likely a style that involves enhancing her physical abilities with skills and layering on enhancements from magical power, fighting with a sword created through her skills.
I mean, she is actually fighting like that in front of me, so there’s no mistake about it.
“…She’s really strong, isn’t she?”
I calmly analyze her abilities as I watch her.
Her skills are definitely professional level.
“Did it! I did it!”
While I was measuring her abilities from behind, Momoha had already finished the fight.
“Good job.”
“Yeah, thanks. So, how was it?”
“Uh, I think it was fine? If you’re fighting in the middle layers, there shouldn’t be any problems with her strength.”
“Really? That’s good.”
Hearing my words, Momoha speaks words of thanks on her own.
“But still… that’s still scary, isn’t it?”
“What is?”
“You know, the Irregular Encounters.”
“…Ah.”
As I say this, Momoha grimaces and groans.
In the middle layers, sometimes monsters from the lower layers roam around—it’s a strange phenomenon.
These Irregular Encounters are indeed a major factor in the increased death rate among adventurers in the middle layers.
“If you’re going to venture into the middle layers, preparing for Irregular Encounters is a must. At least have a way to escape, I think.”
“I don’t usually go down to the middle layers, so I wouldn’t know, but are they that common?”
“Pretty common. Let’s see… about as likely as losing rock-paper-scissors five times in a row?”
“That seems quite frequent.”
Thinking of dying with the same likelihood as losing rock-paper-scissors five times in a row would be quite daunting.
“Ah, look. There it is again.”
Just as we were discussing this, a monster from afar starts approaching.
Its strength is about that of the lower layers… definitely an enemy from an Irregular Encounter.
“…”
Next to me, Momoha grimaces and shows her wariness.
Well, she should.
She once came close to death because of an Irregular Encounter.
It makes sense to be cautious… In other words.
If I can show off my strength here, her impression of me could improve, possibly preventing her from abandoning me.
“Since we’re here… shall I show you my strength?”
I couldn’t miss such a chance.
I declare this proudly, puffing out my chest.
Momoha had been using magical power and skills… I guess I’ll use magic!
“…Can you handle it?”
“No problem.”
I immediately respond to Momoha’s question while beginning to draw a large, three-dimensional magic circle.
“…Huh?”
Momoha lets out a confused voice as she watches me.
“Hehehe… Behold the overwhelming power that could delve into the Netherworld!”
I strike a cool pose as I activate the magic.
“Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!”
The hellfire that rages around the center where the Irregular Encounter monster stands instantly turns it into ash.
