Chapter 37: The Lazy Introvert’s Heroic Figure

I had never been more grateful for my combat experience that I had honed in the dungeons more than now. All those countless battles against monsters had honed my instinct to make a split second decision. My reflexes had been sharpened to ensure I could react appropriately to danger. I dashed to the officer at full speed, quickly closing the distance between us and delivered a solid punch to his abdomen. He doubled over in pain and I immediately took the opportunity to snatch the gun from his right hand. Possession of a firearm was a serious crime, but this wasn’t the time to be worrying about that. 

“Don’t move. I will kill anyone who makes any funny move.”

“You think you guys can win just because I’m alone? You weak0ass cops don’t stand a chance against me.”

“Ugh…”

The policemen flinched under my sharp gaze. Their confidence wavering and the girl managed to escape unharmed amidst the chaos. Her knees buckled and she fell to the ground behind me. Her voice was barely a whisper as she muttered. 

“Tha-Thank you, Oomomo-kun.”

“If you have the time to thank me, you should just use that to run. I will handle this.”

“Huh…? But… They’re the police officers, you know…?”

“So what? I can kill them all just fine.”

With that, I turned my attention to the other students who were still in the courtyard. 

“All of you. You need to get out of here too. I don’t think I can protect you all after this.”

“O-Oomomo-san…”

“You’re really going to help us…?”

Of course, I didn’t have any obligation to protect these people. Although they didn’t harm me directly like Onizuka, but they were silent spectators. They just stood there and let the bullying happen. Of course, I didn’t want them to die in front of me, but I had zero reason to risk my life for them. But still, this fight was caused by my actions. The thought of someone dying because of something I had done just left a bad taste in my mouth. I was merely cleaning up my own mess, not because I wanted to protect them or anything. 

The students must have realized it would be best if they run away now. Nodding silently at my words, they quickly ran toward the back of the school. They didn’t go into the school building though. They probably deemed it would be safer to leave the school through the back gate.

But then, I couldn’t stop myself from frowning upon seeing the thing that happened next. I strained my eyes to see more clearly and there, I could see a group of yakuza approaching the school. I wasn’t entirely sure if they were part of the Kamisuyama clan or not, but I could tell from their demeanor alone that they were not ordinary citizens. There were about 30 of them and they formed a human wall at the school gate to block any attempt I might make to escape. 

Just as I expected, all of them looked lifeless. Their eyes hollow, devoid of any sanity. 

“Tch. What a cowardly tactic.”

I didn’t know why but the Dungeon Investigation Agency seemed intent on eliminating me no matter what. If they were willing to go this far, then I shouldn’t need to hold back either. I was justified to use this gun too.

But then… 

“OOOOOOOHHHHH!!!”

To my surprise, a group of students on bicycles came charging at the enemy group. It wasn’t just one or two students. There were a lot of them. Their faces looked familiar though. They were the same students who had escaped to the back of the school building. All of them launched a full-on assault on the mob with their bikes.

Although they were just a bunch of amateurs, but the sheer number and ferocity from them was enough to overwhelm the enemy. The enemy’s formation crumbled in an instant along with dull cries of pain.

With that motivating yell, the students launched an all-out assault on the drugged police officers and yakuza. The enemy was caught off guard by this unexpected turn of events. Chaos erupted in the enemy’s rank. 

“You idiot! I told you to run! You guys won’t be able to beat them!”

One of the students shouted while swinging an awkward punch at the yakuza.
