Chapter 36: The Lazy Introvert’s Fateful Day
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
For the next few days, I got to enjoy the ‘ordinary life’ I had been wishing for. In the morning, I went to school and focused on my studies while I was at school. When school was over, I would meet up with Shiori, who was always waiting for me at the school gate. We explored the dungeons together in order to search for the final material that I needed to create World’s End Magic Sword. Of course, the material was still listed as ‘???’ in my status window.
Shiori would livestream our dungeon diving. To be more precise, she would live-stream the sight of me fighting monsters. She didn’t even bother asking for my permission first. To be fair, she never listened to anything I said anyway. It didn’t take long for me to stop trying to complain and just let her do whatever she wanted. According to Shiori, she wanted to spread my ‘awesomeness’ to the whole world or something. Yes. I didn’t understand what she meant either. None of what she said made any sense to me. I took a quick glance at her screen and it seemed the number of her viewers kept on increasing with each passing day. That must be her real motive. Probably.
As I began to appear more in Shiori’s livestream, the gap between me and the other students at Gotsukiin High School also became wider. Some students showed obvious intention in wanting to talk to me, but I didn’t pay them any mind since those were the same people who had turned a blind eye to the bullying I had to endure. At least they weren’t being persistent about it. They probably realized that trying to curry my favor at this point would make them look shallow. I was glad they were aware changing sides like this wouldn’t do them any good.
――”You’re still going to Gotsukiin High School, right? Would you like to transfer to a nearby school? Of course, school and education is outside the jurisdiction of the Dungeon Management Bureau, but I could help you transfer with my connections. What do you think?”――
Iijima’s offer came to my mind. To be honest, I wouldn’t mind transferring school right now, but there were a few dungeons around here that were good for hunting rare items. Leaving this place would be a waste given its close proximity to good dungeons. That being said, this school felt uncomfortable now. Staying here for long would be pretty depressing…
“Well, I guess it’s fine as it is for now. I don’t want to think about it now. It’s too troublesome.”
Just like usual, I abandoned my train of thought halfway through. There was one more thing. The girl who had thanked me for saving her from bullying was still revering me. No, for real. Her eyes were full of respect, like she wanted to worship me. She was a fairly well-known streamer herself. Of course, she didn’t have nearly as many subscribers as Yuria and her content didn’t seem to be related to dungeon. The girl had asked if I would be willing to appear in one of her videos, but I politely declined her. Partly because it seemed like a hassle, but the biggest reason why I declined her was… I couldn’t imagine what that yandere would do if I were to appear in someone else’s video. Especially a girl.
And so, the fateful day came two weeks after I first stayed over at Shiori’s place. It all began with a phone call from Iijima when I was on my way to school.
“Oi, oi…”
I didn’t mind him calling me, but I was already at school. The other students were pouring in through the school gate behind me with a few teachers standing here and there. I could hear the sound of other students greeting the teachers. There was no way I could have a conversation with a high-ranking government official in a place as public as this.
(I will need to ask Jinba to tell Iijima to be more careful later. There’s no way I could answer a call right now.)
I thought to myself. I was about to ignore the call when suddenly, screeching alarms blared from all directions, causing me to freeze in my tracks.
――Announcement. Large-scale terrorist attack alert. Announcement. Large-scale terrorist attack alert. There’s a terrorist attack in this area. Please evacuate immediately.――
“Wha-What…?!”
That was the national warning system. An emergency alert that rang in the designated area when a big crisis was happening.
“Huh…?”
“A large-scale terrorist attack…?”
The other students all wore the same anxious expressions on their faces as they glanced around nervously. Some tried to rush inside the school, but most of them remained frozen from panic.
“Tch…!!”
I quickly hid behind the shadow and pressed the accept button on my still-vibrating phone. It mustn’t be a coincidence for Iijima to be calling me. He must be wanting to talk about the terrorist threat.
“Oh! Ren-kun! Thank goodness you picked up…!”
As soon as I picked up the call, I could hear Iijima’s voice. He sounded really relieved that I picked his call up.
“IIjima-san, just what is going on here?”
“Yeah, I know. I can hear the siren going off from here. Actually, I have some information related to that. Are you in a good place to talk?”
“Yes. There’s no one around.”
“Good. I will need to keep this brief.”
Iijima took a deep breath before he continued on. His voice sounded extremely serious.
“Right now, it’s safe to say we’re being targeted by the… Dungeon Investigation Agency.”
“The Dungeon Investigation Agency…?!”
“Yes. I actually had a few of my staff investigating the agency, but they’ve gone MIA as of yesterday.”
“Tha-That’s..!”
I was taken aback, but to me, it seemed the agency had their priorities backwards. Why would they eliminate a mere staff and cause a large-scale terrorist incident? They were practically exposing their true color by doing something like this.
“Yeah. Exactly. I agree with you. I didn’t expect them to go this far either.”
Just like usual, Iijima seemed to be able to hear my thoughts. His response was perfectly aligned with my thoughts.
“We don’t know for sure yet, but the Dungeon Investigation Agency might have some hidden trump card. Maybe some secret about dungeons that they haven’t told us…”
“Secret about dungeons…”
“Yes. There are a lot of other things I’d like to discuss with you, but for now, we need to get this problem done first. Are you still at school?”
“Yeah.”
“Understood. I will contact Jinba-san to tell him to arrange a meeting at another location. We’re being targeted, so it’s best to act with caution.”
“Understood. I’ll see you soon, Iijima-san.”
However, just as I was about to end the call, Iijima suddenly stopped me.
“Ah, wait a moment. There’s one more thing I need to tell you. Actually, the staff who we lost contact with were under the protection of undercover police officers since the past few days. We’ve taken extra precautions for their safety, so they should still be safe, but it’s best to be cautious, Ren-kun.”
“…So you’re saying that our enemy is powerful enough to get through the undercover police?”
“Yes. That’s what we’re afraid of. But there’s also another possibility. Maybe the police are under the influence of the drugs too—”
But before Iijima could finish his sentence, a sudden scream came from one of the female students. Her scream pierced the air, causing me to tense up. I focused my senses and I could feel four with malicious intentions nearby.
“Iijima-san, it looks like they’re already here. I need to focus on getting through this situation, let’s meet up later!”
I said that before I ended the call and made my way out from the shadow. I ran toward the direction of the voice and just as I expected, the worst type of enemy for my background was there. Several police officers in uniform were making their way to the school. Their expressions were hollow. To make matters worse, one of them was lifting one of the female students by her neck.
“Argh…!! He-Help me…!”
“…Damn it!”
I quickly rushed to the girl’s rescue, wanting to break the grip he had on the female student. But..
“…Target identified. Ren Oomomo.”
The other officers turned their gaze at me and to my surprise, they took their pistols from their holsters.
“You’ve got to be kidding me…”
Before I could fully grasp the whole situation, the sharp sound of gunfire echoed through the school grounds.
