Chapter 27: The Lazy Introvert Receives an Item That Is Not Available to the Public
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
A gemstone that could mimic the environment of a dungeon, effectively allowing status benefits in the dungeon to be used in the real world… The effect of that gemstone was beyond my wildest expectations, but what shocked me even more was the fact that the Kamisuyama group could get their hands on these extraordinary items. This item could definitely be used to cause serious crime if misused…
“Fufufu~ I can see why Ren-sama is so flabbergasted.”
Jinba put the gem back into the bag and flashed a mischievous grin that reminded me again of the fact that he was a member of a yakuza.
“This thing would become a breeding ground for crime if this thing were to be made public. I can understand your fear, which is why only a selected few and the top brass of the Dungeon Management Bureau know about the existence of this item.”
“Heh.”
I couldn’t help but to let out a sarcastic smile at Jinba’s explanation.
“Talking about breeding grounds for a crime, but giving this gemstone to the yakuza? How ironic. What about the Anti-Organized Crime Law?”
“Hahahaha! Let’s put that matter aside for now…”
Jinba laughed, bearing the face that made him look like a real villain. Especially with his left eye covered with an eye patch and the countless cuts on his face and arms. Not to mention, his burly physique that made him look like a walking bear. He was the kind of a man who would make any ordinary person wet their pants at first sight.
“…Well then, let’s get to the main topic.”
Jinba said before he displayed his own status window. He fiddled with the status with his fingertips before he glanced at me.
“I would like to share something with Ren-sama. Is that alright with you?”
“Yeah, fine by me.”
“Understood.”
The item that appeared after Jinba nodded his head was a Phoenix Feather.
“Thi-This is…”
“This is an item that can resurrect you back to full health when you die within a dungeon. How is it? Is the item to your liking?”
“Is this for real…”
The Dungeon Management Bureau was more outrageous than I thought for them to be hiding something like this. Needless to say, the dungeons were far more dangerous than the real world. According to Jinba, it seemed they actually wanted to distribute the Phoenix Feather to many explorers, but… Just like in most RPG games, resurrection items were highly rare. Making this item public would lead to trouble and it seemed only the top brass of the Dungeon Management Bureau knew about this item along with a select few explorers.
“…Good grief.”
To think a rare item like this could fall to the hand of Jinba, someone who was part of the underworld. I really couldn’t trust the government anymore.
“How about it, Ren-sama? Given how rare this item is, I’m sure this item is quite satisfactory for you.”
“Hmm…”
Indeed. This was an incredible item in terms of rarity, but even when I was playing RPGs, I didn’t like using revival items. I always explored the dungeon while being mindful of my own safety. So, this Phoenix Feather would only take away the fun from dungeon exploring to me.
“Hm… Very well.”
My reaction must be lackluster, since Jinba started fiddling with his status window again.
“Then how about this? This item is a bit less impressive than the Phoenix Feather, but…”
The next item that he showed to me was a ‘Taming Scroll, Level 1’.
“This is…?”
“This is an item that allows you to acquire a new skill upon use. Apparently you will be able to command over monsters with this taming skill.”
“What…?!”
This skill could be extremely useful in dungeon exploring. I needed to reach the maximum level to be able to use all elemental magic and I was only able to acquire extra skills recently. Every explorer would be trembling with joy whenever they acquired a new skill upon leveling up (regardless of the skill’s strength), but this item could give you a new skill just by consuming it?! Not to mention, taming skills? It was a common skill in games, but I had never heard of any dungeon explorer that could tame a monster.
“Hmm… But from what I’ve heard, it takes a long time to level up this skill and you can only tame weak monsters at the beginning. It’s said you will need to defeat an Orichalcum Slime just to level it up, so I don’t think this skill can be that useful to Ren-sama…”
“No, this one is good enough.”
“Wha-What?!”
Jinba’s eyes widened in surprise.
‘Are you sure?! Even the Dungeon Management Bureau still doesn’t know the true nature of this skill. For all we know, this might be just another of those useless trash skill. I’m afraid Ren-sama’s effort will be in vain if you take this skill…”
“Yeah and I’m fine by it. Discovering the unknown is what excites me. I’m a gamer after all. This is the true thrill of adventuring. Remember that.”
“I-I see…”
Not like Jinba could understand the thrill of adventuring from a gamer point of view. He was looking at me with a confused look on his face. Well, his reaction was justified though. I hadn’t told anyone, not even my father, not Jinba, not anyone that I had maxed out my level. They didn’t know that I knew the most efficient hunting grounds to grind experience points or the fact that I could easily take down high-experience monsters like Orichalcum Slime. Jinba didn’t know about this, so it was only natural for him to look this confused.
“Understood, but I think it will be wise to look at some other items as well. What do you think?”
“Ah, yes. Show me, just to be sure.”
After that, I checked out a few more items that weren’t available to the public but in the end, the Taming Scroll was the thing that piqued my interest the most. There were definitely some powerful items, like an item that could double your status points, or an item that could make you master a single type of elemental magic, but I really didn’t need any of those. I had already reached the maximum level after all.
Taming Skill was something new, something unknown. I hadn’t heard of that skill in video sharing sites or forums. Of course I was more interested in that. Or at least, the gamer side of me.
“…I understand. If Ren-sama is sure this is what you want then I shall give you the Taming Scroll, Level 1.”
Jinba fiddled with his status window once again and in the next moment, the Taming Scroll, Level 1 was transferred to my inventory.
“Alright. Now that we’re done with this…”
I closed my status window and turned my attention to Jinba.
“So? Speak. I know you have another reason for calling me here, right?”
“Ugh…”
Jinba’s eyes widened in surprise.
“Hahaha, as expected of Ren-sama. Your perception is as sharp as usual.”
“Spare me the flattery and get to the point already.”
“Very well.”
Jinba said before he pulled out his smartphone from his pocket. He called someone, had a brief conversation before he ended the call and looked at me.
“I’m sure you will be surprised, but I will give it to you straight. The top brass of the Dungeon Management Bureau, or to be precise, the Deputy Minister of the Dungeon Management Bureau wants to meet you, Ren-sama.”
