Chapter 1: I Ended up Moving to Tokyo

It was a morning toward the end of summer vacation. I was standing in front of the airport in my hometown. My name was Haruki Uegami. I was a normal seventeen-year-old second-year high school student living in a rural town. By the way, I attended an all-boys school, so I had very little interaction with girls and had never had a girlfriend.

As for my family, it was just my mother and me. My father had passed away when I was a baby, so he wasn’t in this world. Until today, my mother had worked tirelessly to earn money and raise me. I could only feel deep gratitude toward her. So, to help my mother, I had always taken care of all the household chores. Since I was a child, I handled cooking, laundry, and cleaning. Basically everything. Thanks to that, I had become quite skilled at household tasks.

With that, my mother and I had supported each other and lived happily together in this rural town, just the two of us. But recently, my mother’s hard work had been recognized by the higher-ups at her company, and she had received an award. With that award, she was also promoted, and it was decided she would be transferred to the Tokyo headquarters. In other words, she had received a prestigious transfer. It was truly wonderful that her efforts had been recognized.

However, my mother still had tasks to finish at her current workplace, so I was going to move to Tokyo ahead of her before the end of summer vacation. I was also set to transfer to a school in Tokyo after the vacation. So, once I got to Tokyo, I would be living alone for a while, apart from my mother. I had always had a bit of a longing to live alone, so I was actually looking forward to it. And so today was finally the day I would move to Tokyo. I was standing in front of the local airport, saying goodbye to my male friends.

“Man, I really hate this. Haruki, you’re going to Tokyo… I wish we could’ve hung out more.”

“I feel the same. I’m really sad to be parting from everyone. But I guess I’ll still come back here during long vacations since Grandma’s house is nearby. So we can hang out again then.”

“Yeah, that’s true! And we might end up visiting Tokyo too, so when that happens, you’ll give us a tour, right?”

“Of course. I’ll show you all around whenever you come. I’ll be waiting for you to visit Tokyo!”

“Alright. Then we’ll contact you as soon as we decide to come!”

And so, I said cheerful goodbyes with my friends from the all-boys school as usual. Well, they would probably come back during long breaks anyway, so I wasn’t too sad. I was able to say goodbye brightly, without feeling too pessimistic.

“Ha… Tokyo, huh. I’ve never been there, but it must be super urban. Oh, by the way, this is your first time moving to Tokyo, right, Haruki?”

“No, I have relatives in the Kanto area, so I’ve visited them sometimes and done a bit of sightseeing in Tokyo too.”

“Ah, right, you did mention that. And you said there’s a really cute older female relative there, right? Ha, I’m super jealous of that!”

“I’ve heard that story from you a long time ago. That older sister is your first love, isn’t she?”

“Yeah. Whenever I went to their house, she would always play with me. She was so kind, fashionable, and beautiful. Well, now she’s a working adult, so I don’t get to see her much, but I really loved hanging out with her as a kid.”

I had an older female relative living in Kanto. She often played with me during summer and winter vacations. But now, she was around 23–24 years old, fully immersed in her career, and my mother and I hadn’t visited Tokyo in recent years. So it had probably been nearly three years since I last saw her. The last time had been during winter vacation three years ago, when we took photos together for her coming-of-age ceremony.

So, once I moved to Tokyo, I’d be happy if I could meet her again, have meals together, or go out, but… Since she was now a working adult, that might be difficult. Watching my mother, I understood how demanding working life could be.

Well, once I get to Tokyo, I’ll make sure to properly greet Nee-san!

I knew she was now living alone in an apartment in Tokyo. In fact, her apartment was in the same station area as the house my mother and I would be moving into. So I thought I could visit her soon to say hello.

“Hmm, I see. But now that I think about it, Haruki’s mom is super beautiful too. Man, your family’s full of gorgeous women! You’re so lucky!”

“Yeah, definitely! I wouldn’t be surprised if she were a model or celebrity. She’s that kind of beauty—a traditional Japanese beauty with long, silky black hair and sharp, elegant eyes!”

“Honestly, even I think that as her son. Mom’s really beautiful. She must be popular at work. As her son, I wouldn’t mind at all if she remarried or found happiness again.”

“Haha, Haruki’s mom cares most about you, so I guess she’s not thinking about remarriage. Actually, once, she came to my family’s liquor store to buy something…”

“Huh? To your family’s store? And then?”

“Well, my mom casually asked her if she was thinking about remarrying. And she smiled and said, ‘I’m so happy with just Haruki that I’m not thinking about having a boyfriend or husband at all.’”

“Wait… Mom actually said that?”

I was shocked. I hadn’t known they had that conversation. Mom wasn’t thinking about dating or remarrying at all.

“Yeah. And the way she smiled really showed she meant it. You could really feel how important Haruki is to her.”

“Oh, and now that I think about it, every time we meet your mom, she always bows deeply and thanks us for playing with you. She’s truly a remarkable and kind person—such a great mom, I’m jealous.”

“Uh… Well, I’m happy to hear her being praised, but… It does feel a little embarrassing when people compliment my mom like that.”

“Haha, yeah, it can feel awkward when someone suddenly praises your family like that.”

I felt slightly embarrassed being complimented by Masatsugu and the others, but I was also really happy. After all, I had always loved my mom. With that, I proudly thought of my kind and wonderful mother, and continued joking and chatting with Masatsugu and the others.

“Haha… Oh, right. Haruki, you’re transferring to a co-ed school in Tokyo, right? That’s super lucky! You’ll be meeting so many girls! Awesome!”

“Yeah, definitely. Being able to interact with girls is so jealous-making for us all-boys school guys. Oh, and if you get a girlfriend, make sure to tell us! We’ll celebrate with you wholeheartedly!”

“Haha, I can’t just get a girlfriend that easily. Sure, I might meet some girls after being in an all-boys school, but getting a girlfriend will still be really tough.”

We started chatting about my upcoming co-ed school. Since we had all been in an all-boys school, none of us had girlfriends. I could understand why they were envious. But transferring to a co-ed school didn’t mean I would automatically get a girlfriend, so I laughed and denied it. They laughed too and said.

“Haha, no way! Haruki, you’re as good-looking as your mom, kind, and great at everything. Plus, you’re amazing at household chores! Those are all points girls would love! Honestly, if you were a girl, we’d all be fighting over you!”

“Haha, for real! Your cooking is always amazing, and you always sew on a button if it comes off. Seriously, your girl-power is insane. If you were a girl, we’d all be dating you!”

“Haha, come on. I wouldn’t be happy if guys confessed to me! I’d much rather it be girls!”

““Haha, true!””

We laughed at that silly conversation. Then…

『Attention, we will soon begin boarding for the Tokyo flight. Those who have completed check-in, please proceed to security screening.』

“Oh, that’s my flight. Alright, time to go.”

“Got it. Take care in Tokyo, and if anything happens, contact us anytime.”

“And let us know when you come back here. We’ll also tell you if we go to Tokyo. Let’s hang out again!”

“Yeah, got it. See you later, everyone!”

““See you!””

With that, I said my goodbyes and separated from my friends at the airport. I went through security and boarded the plane to Tokyo. Sitting in my assigned seat, I looked out the window and thought about my earlier conversation with my friends.

“Haha, really, all my friends in this town are good people. Even if they said something weird at the end.”

If Haruki were a girl, we’d all be dating her…

I chuckled at their strange comment. I definitely didn’t want a harem BL scenario with my male friends. Of course, it was nice hearing that someone would want to date me because I’m kind or good at chores,but I’d rather hear that from female friends, not male friends. That said, having gone to an all-boys school until now, I had no female friends to say such things… Haah.

Well, now I’ll be going to a co-ed school, so maybe I’ll meet some girls… Oh, this plane has TVs. Wonder if there’s anything interesting?

I noticed a tablet attached to my seat. Apparently, each passenger had a tablet with Wi-Fi, so I could watch TV or check news even in the sky. I opened the TV interface and started zapping through channels.

“Oh, we’re almost there.”  

The announcement meant we were about to land in Tokyo. I must have slept for over an hour. I slept for that long… I guess I was really tired? Stretching lightly, I felt excited about finally arriving in Tokyo and adjusted my seat. And so, I was about to start my life in the huge metropolis of Tokyo. I was determined to enjoy my new life to the fullest!
