Chapter 30 – Christmas Plans
I confessed everything.
After listening to my explanation from the beginning to the present while only nodding along, Shuka was silent for a few seconds, swallowed her saliva, and finally spoke.
“…Onii-chan, you’re really entering your popular phase.”
Her face was full of disbelief.
Well, I understand how she feels.
I’m sure she’s wondering what kind of romantic comedy this is, where two beautiful girls are coming on to me when until recently I didn’t even have a girlfriend, let alone any friends.
“So, what are you planning to do, Onii-chan?”
Now that she’s understood the situation, Shuka asked again.
“If I knew that, I wouldn’t have any problems. That’s why I asked you.”
“If they’re twins, that means that Hikari-san and… Yuzuki-san? They’re just as beautiful, right?”
After I explained everything to her, Shuka finally figured out the names of Yuzuki and Hikari.
However, her voice sounded a bit uncertain, as if she was still unclear about it.
“Well, that’s true.”
“Then you should just love both of them!”
Shuka said with a grin.
She seemed to be enjoying the situation as if it had nothing to do with her.
“That’s not what you said earlier though.”
“If it’s really happening, then it’s a different story. If I were in your position, I’d be thrilled!”
“Seriously…”
I think everyone is taking this too lightly. I don’t have the luxury of enjoying this situation.
Or am I taking it too seriously? Is that how people are? Am I too obsessed with love?
I don’t get it.
“Okay then.”
As I was thinking, Shuka stood up, satisfied, and got off the bed. She started walking away.
“I’m satisfied because I got to hear your interesting story, so I’ll head back now. If there’s any more news, make sure to report it to me, okay?”
“No way.”
When I replied coldly, Shuka puffed out her cheeks. Even if I didn’t say anything, she’d probably just come here to find out.
“Fine, whatever,” Shuka said, turning to leave the room. However, she suddenly stopped moving and turned to look at me again.
“Hey, Onii-chan.”
Unlike before, her tone of voice was somewhat serious. I wondered what was wrong and waited for her to continue.
“Love is something to enjoy, you know?”
“What’s with that all of a sudden?”
“It’s okay to worry, but I think suffering is different. There are painful and sad things and all sorts of stuff, but if you don’t enjoy everything together, you’re missing out.”
“……”
Shuka spoke as if she were a seasoned woman with rich love experience, even though to my knowledge, she had never had a boyfriend. Maybe she secretly has one.
“It looks like you’re not enjoying yourself right now, Onii-chan.”
After saying that, Shuka left the room.
I collapsed to the floor and stared at the ceiling. I ruminated Shuka’s words that were going round and round in my head.
“…How come she can act so wise?”
◇
The next day after school.
After school, which had ended like any other day. I joined the flow of students leaving the classroom and went out into the hallway.
I headed straight for the entrance, changed my shoes, and leaned my back against a random wall to wait for someone.
Last night, after talking with Shuka, I thought about it and decided what to do next, so I contacted Hikari.
I told her I wanted some time after school, and she agreed without hesitation. And now, I’m waiting for her.
In the end, we decided to go home together.
When I was leaving the classroom, I caught a glimpse of Hikari, and she was talking to her friends, so maybe it would take a little longer.
——Or so I thought.
“Sorry to keep you waiting.”
As I was spacing out, Hikari suddenly popped into my field of vision. She looked unusually happy, and a question mark appeared on my face.
“Are you in a good mood?”
“Yes.”
I moved my back away from the wall and stood up. Then, Hikari moved next to me happily, smiling.
“Did something happen?”
“Yes, it was the first time Ao invited me to go home together!”
Her carefree smile was so dazzling that I squinted my eyes. Is it really possible to smile this much just because I invited her to go home together?
“What kind of response should I give?”
“You can just say, ‘I’ll invite you more from now on!’”
“I’ll do my best.”
We started walking while talking like that. There weren’t many students around, probably because we were a little late.
We passed a few here and there, but they didn’t seem to mind us and were enjoying their own world.
Surprisingly, people might not be as interested in what’s going on around them as you think.
“So, what would you like to talk about?”
“Ah, well,” I said, moistening my dry lips.
The reason I called Hikari out here today, of course, was to talk about Christmas.
“Do you have any plans for Christmas?”
I had briefly talked about Christmas with Yuzuki, but when I thought about it, this was the first time I was bringing it up with Hikari, so she might think I was suddenly saying something strange.
“No, I don’t!”
She answered so quickly that when I looked at her, countless stars were twinkling in the depths of her eyes.
“I was trying to ask you too! If you’re asking me that, does that mean you don’t have any plans either? Is it an invitation to spend Christmas together?”
Hikari got closer and closer to me. When she gets excited, her sense of distance gets all messed up, so my heart just instinctively pounds.
“That’s the idea, more or less.”
“Is it okay if we do it on the 25th? I have plans with friends on the 24th.”
“So you do have plans.”
“But Christmas is on the 25th!”
That’s true.
“Then it’s a date on the 25th!”
With that, my plan with Hikari is complete.
I decided to meet both of them on Christmas, so I first reached out to Hikari, whom I was uncertain about her schedule.
Now, all I have to do is tell Yuzuki to meet up with me on the 24th and everything would be good to go.
