Chapter 3 – The Buzz Inside the Classroom
A lot happened on Saturday, so after another day off, Monday came and I went to school as usual.
There’s nothing to do if I come to school early, but I don’t like to rush around to arrive on time, so I arrived at my classroom about ten minutes before the bell.
At this time, two-thirds of my classmates have already arrived, and the classroom is always noisy as several groups are chatting away as they please.
However, the atmosphere in the classroom today seemed a little different than usual.
There was a lot of conversation going on, so it was noisy, but perhaps I should say it was more like it was bustling.
It’s hard to put into words, but the atmosphere was a little different.
My seat is in the ideal position at the very back by the window. (T/N: That’s MC SEAT! This guy is born to be a main character)
It would be nice if I could just casually ask someone on my way there, “Is something wrong?”, but unfortunately I’m not that close with anyone.
Unable to grasp the true nature of this strange feeling, I reached my seat and listened to the conversations around me as I stared blankly around the classroom.
Suddenly, My eyes fell on a pair of classmates who stood out more than the others.
Kotobuki Hikari and Kotobuki Yuzuki.
They are a pair of extremely rare twin sisters. Well, maybe it’s not so rare to say the least.
Hikari has medium-long brown hair with wavy ends. She’s slender and looks like she would be good at PE.
Yuzuki has long black hair that makes her give off the Yamato Nadeshiko vibe. She has a model-like figure with feminine curves that makes her look strong and she seems intellectual.
I don’t have much contact with them, so I don’t know which one is the older sister and which one is the younger sister.
I can guess from the way they usually interact with their friends that Hikari is cheerful and Yuzuki is quiet and calm.
“What’s everyone talking about?”
A black-haired girl who had just arrived at school joined the group and effortlessly did what I couldn’t.
The group was talking near me, so I listened in on their conversation.
“Here, take a look. Do you know about it?”
The blond girl said and showed the black-haired girl her smartphone. Hey, what did you show her? If you don’t say it, I can’t hear.
“Yeah, I saw it. It spread so fast.”
It spread?
What are they talking about? A branch? A river?
“People are saying that this is our uniform, right?”
“Yeah, I thought the same thing. But I don’t know anyone like that.”
“Well, we don’t even know what year he’s in. Maybe we’ll find him if we look around the school.”
They were having a good time, but I couldn’t figure out what they were talking about.
I tried eavesdropping on the conversation of the other groups, but as expected, I missed the important parts, so I couldn’t get an answer.
I was groaning, not knowing what to do, when someone called out to me.
“You’re already showing a stupid face so early in the morning.”
There’s only one person who would go out of their way to say something so rude so early in the morning.
I knew who the voice belonged to without even turning around, but I decided to glare at her in return for her abusive remark.
“Maybe if you took off your glasses, you’d look a little better.”
The girl who said this to me with her short, white hair and listless voice was Hibino Sumomo.
She’s my only friend at school.
“That’s none of your business.”
“And if you just did a little something with your hair, you’d have a face that’s at least somewhat presentable, you know?”
Like this, she said, showing me the screen of her smartphone. I couldn’t help but open my eyes when I saw what was on the screen.
It was a familiar scene.
I was shown a video, and the content was part of the incident I’d gotten myself into on Saturday.
“It’s you, right, Kirishima?”
Hibino said, raising her voice a little as she sat down in the empty seat in front of me.
She seemed to be enjoying herself a little.
“No way, that looks nothing like me. I wear glasses, and I don’t style my hair.”
“So if Kirishima takes off his glasses and styles his hair, he’ll look like this?”
“……”
It seems that Hibino has already reached a solid conclusion, and no matter how much I try to hide it, I won’t be able to cover it up.
“Still, if I hadn’t constantly paid close attention to Kirishima’s face, I probably wouldn’t have noticed it. I was surprised to see you taking such a noticeable action.”
“…There was someone collapsing right in front of me. This isn’t the time to be saying such things.”
Apparently someone in that crowd had filmed the whole thing. I wish they had helped out if they had the time, but there’s no point in saying anything now.
The bigger problem is that the video is circulating. It’s become a topic of conversation in the classroom.
“You should tell everyone. You’ll be a star in the class.”
“You know I don’t like to stand out, don’t you?”
“Of course.”
I shot her a half-hearted glare, but Hibino just smiled back without a care.
“And on top of that, the girls you helped were the Kotobuki sisters. All the boys would be happy to accept their thanks. I wonder what kind of erotic services they’ll provide.”
“Is it confirmed that it’ll be erotic…?”
As I comment on her nonsense, I glanced at the Kotobuki sisters.
The idols of all the boys, huh?
I suppose that’s to be expected with their looks. I’m sure everyone has fantasized about a romantic comedy with them at least once.
Even a realist like me has done it.
“Hirano-san, do you know this person?”
Kotobuki Hikari asked our classmates.
By “this person,” she was probably referring to the person in the video.
However, Hirano-san just shook her head. Seeing her reaction, Kotobuki Hikari slumped her shoulders and said, “I see…” dejectedly.
Two seats away, Kotobuki Yuzuki was asking another classmate.
“Nono. Do you know this person?”
“Hmm, with a handsome face like that, you wouldn’t forget after seeing him once, but I don’t know him.”
Hearing Nono’s reply, Kotobuki Yuzuki also sighed.
If I were to say that it was me right here and now, I might indeed get some kind of thanks, just like Hibino said.
Or maybe there’s a chance that a romantic comedy like the one everyone has fantasized about at least once might begin.
However…
If I did something like that, I’d stand out. With all the buzz around this, if I were to come forward, I would definitely be forced to answer all sorts of questions.
It’s been six months since I enrolled.
I’ve grown comfortable in this plain, inconspicuous position where my presence doesn’t really matter.
I don’t want to let this go.
In the first place, it’s not like I helped because I wanted anything in return. If that’s the case, maybe it’d be better if someone else said they were the one who helped. Yeah, that might be better… I think.
And just like that, I hoped that this topic would fade away in a few days and that the matter would die down without anyone finding out about my existence.
Unfortunately, my prayers were not answered.
