Chapter 20 – Yuzuki Has What Hikari Doesn’t
And then finally, it’s Saturday.
The day that I’m going to visit the Kotobuki family has finally arrived.
I didn’t wake up feeling very well in the morning.
To begin with, I had a hard time falling asleep yesterday due to tension, so I’m a little sleep-deprived.
I got up with a heavy body and left my room. I went to the bathroom to wash my face and wake myself up.
After all that, I felt a little more alive. I kept splashing my face until my brain was fully awake.
“…Whew.”
I finally felt alert.
I then moved on to brushing my teeth. While brushing my teeth, I stared blankly at myself in the mirror.
Every morning since I got my haircut, I’ve thought about how much a haircut can change one’s appearance as I look in the mirror. While fiddling with my shorter hair with my fingers, I continued brushing my teeth.
After rinsing my mouth, I went back to my room. Since there was only one outfit to wear, I didn’t have to worry. I put on my lucky outfit (the only one I have) that I took out of the closet yesterday.
Then, I moved to the bathroom again.
At the hair salon, Goto-san taught me a little about styling my hair. I probably won’t be able to achieve the same look, but I think I can get close to it.
Facing the mirror, I put wax on my hands and rubbed it into my hair. Then, I awkwardly started styling it, but after only a few days of practice, I still wasn’t satisfied with the results.
As I was groaning, I heard a noise behind me.
“…O-Onii-chan is styling his hair?”
With trembling lips, Shuka pointed at me as if she’d seen a ghost and said this. The sound was apparently the sound of her smartphone being dropped in shock.
“I learned this at the salon. Today is a bit of an important day, so I’m trying my best.”
As I said this, I turned to the mirror and started to style my hair again. However, it still wasn’t turning out how I wanted.
Perhaps unable to bear seeing me like that, Shuka came over and muttered,
“Hmm, I guess Onii-chan is trying to grow up too.”
Then she touched my hair.
“Leave it to your cute and perfect sister for today. I’ll turn you into a handsome man that everyone will steal glances at. No, forget it, that was too much of an exaggeration.”
“You apologized too soon.”
As she said that, Shuka started ruffling my hair. It’s clear that she has better skills than me, so I decided to leave it all to her.
“Are you going on a date with that beautiful woman again today?”
“Why do you ask?”
“Because you, the guy who would normally wear a weird T-shirt even to the bookstore around the corner, are actually dressing up today.”
She’s sharp.
No… Maybe I’m just that easy to read.
“Well, something like that.”
Actually, I’m going to meet the beautiful woman’s father, but if I said that, she’ll either collapse from shock or become neurotic from worrying, so let’s just keep quiet here.
“Hmm. Then I’ll have to style you to look the best you can.”
Shuka’s voice was cheerful as she styled my hair with enthusiasm.

Because I didn’t know where the Kotobuki house was, and I was afraid of pressing the intercom of a house I was visiting for the first time, they agreed to pick me up at the nearest station.
I arrived at the station ten minutes before the meeting time of eleven o’clock. I was worried because Yuzuki was at the meeting place quite early on our last date, but it seems today will be fine.
I contacted Yuzuki, so I figured she’d come, but I leaned against a pillar and decided to wait for a while, wondering if she would show up.
“Sorry to keep you waiting, Ao-kun.”
I heard my name called from behind, so I turned around.
“Sorry for the wait.”
Beside Yuzuki was Hikari.
Yuzuki was wearing a fluffy cardigan and a flared skirt, a very mature look.
Hikari, on the other hand, had a boyish style of a hoodie, shorts and tights.
Both of them were dressed just as I imagined them to be.
Yuzuki seemed to have noticed my puzzled expression of why there were two of them and answered it for me.
“I told her that I could come alone, but she insisted.”
“I told her I’d come, so Yuzuki could wait at home.”
“Ao-kun contacted me, so I should have been the one to come here, don’t you think?”
“Why did Ao contact Yuzuki?!”
Just when I thought they were exchanging heated glares, the conversation unexpectedly turned to me, and I was caught off guard.
“Uh, I didn’t really have a deep reason for it.”
“Maybe it’s because of the evaluation of our last date?”
“No, it’s really not.”
“Please contact me from now on.”
“That’s not acceptable. Ao-kun, make sure you go through me in the future too.”
If I started arguing, it would never end, and no matter which one I messaged, the other would complain, so I decided to create a LINE group for the three of us.
I thought that this would be the end of it, but the fight between the twins broke out again just three minutes later.
“Shall we go then?”
“Yeah.”
We then decided to head to the Kotobuki house, but apparently, the two of them had come by bicycle.
“Come on, Ao-kun. Sit on the back.”
“Hop on, Ao. Get on the back.”
I let out a big sigh.
I felt a sense of déjà vu. I had a bad feeling about this, but I needed to keep the conversation going, so I started thinking about my response.
Should I choose Yuzuki?
Should I choose Hikari?
Or should I ride myself?
No matter what I choose, I feel like an argument like the one before would break out again.
“Ao will ride with me. Yuzuki, back off!”
“Ao-kun will ride with me. You’re the one who should stay out of the way.”
But even without me saying anything, the fight broke out.
What’s going on, what should I do?
“Yuzuki is not strong enough to ride a bike with a boy on her back, so it will be safer for Ao to ride with me.”
My impression is that Hikari is more of an athlete and Yuzuki is more of an academic person.
That image is probably roughly correct. If that’s the case, then it would certainly be a wise decision to choose Hikari.
Aside from safety, the main reason is that Yuzuki would be tired.
“That’s right.”
In the very moment that I was about to choose Hikari, Yuzuki stopped me with a “wait a minute.”
“Ao-kun is a boy. A high school boy. Can he really do something as uncool as riding on the back of a girl’s bike?”
I was about to move towards Hikari when I was stopped dead on my tracks.
Now that I think about it, that does seem rather uncool.
“On that note, like Hikari said, I don’t have the strength to pedal a bike with Ao-kun on the back, so I’ll let Ao-kun ride it.”
“…I see.”
“Wait a minute. In that case, I’ll ride on the back instead. That should solve the problem!”
That’s a very reasonable point.
However, for some reason, the moment Hikari said that, Yuzuki smiled as if she was sure of victory.
“Hey, Ao-kun. Who do you want? Who do you want to ride with you, me or Hikari?”
“…Either is fine.”
That’s what I honestly think.
Hikari then played another card.
“I’m lighter than Yuzuki, so it’ll be less work on you, Ao.”
Hikari smiled triumphantly.
However, it seems that such an attack is no big deal, as Yuzuki’s composed expression remains unchanged.
“It’s true, Hikari weighs less than me.”
“See! She admitted it herself!”
“Hey, Ao-kun, why do you think I weigh more than Yokari? Honestly, I think it’s because I have something that she doesn’t have.” (T/N: Brooo! I told you Yuzuki is best!)
Yuzuki looked smug.
Realizing what Yuzuki meant by that, Hikari was embarrassed.
I also instinctively swallowed my saliva.
“Two people on a bike can be very dangerous, so the person on the back has to hold on tight to the person in front, right? Of course, that’s what I plan to do…”
Yuzuki glanced at me.
“W-w-w-wha…”
Hikari was at a loss for words.
And so, I decided to choose Yuzuki.
Let’s just say that the reason was because I was too tired to think about it.
