Chapter 11 – A Date With Kotobuki Hikari
Having just finished watching a movie and a slightly late lunch, it was about two o’clock in the afternoon.
“I’m reluctant to leave, but it’s about time,” Yuzuki muttered, looking at the clock.
I hadn’t heard any details about the plans for the day, like what time we’d be together until. I was only told the general idea that we’d be meeting in two sessions.
“Is that so?”
I also felt sad to part because we just had such a great time talking about the movie. This feeling of wanting to be together a little longer felt precious.
“Yes. We’re switching at two o’clock.”
It wasn’t that I particularly liked being alone, it was just that I didn’t feel the need to force myself to be with someone I didn’t particularly connect with.
As a result, I simply hadn’t found that person, but I was able to talk normally with Hibino without worrying.
So, I knew that a person I could enjoy talking with was a rare thing.
“Should we go somewhere else?”
I wonder what Yuzuki thought.
Today, I intended to show my true self. I tried to be as casual as possible, as if we were normal friends.
So I don’t think she had the same impression of me as when I performed CPR on her mother. As a result, I don’t know what Yuzuki thought of me.
If she thinks I’m different from what she expected, I can understand that.
“Is that okay?”
Yuzuki’s expression brightened up.
Yuzuki usually gives off a rather cool vibe, but the innocent smile she occasionally shows makes her look cute in contrast.
“I had a lot of fun today.”
“Me too. I like you even more now, Ao-kun. What about you?”
I was taken aback by the word “like.” When she expressed it so directly, I got embarrassed. The person who said it was embarrassed too. The proof was in her red face.
What about me?
I ruminated on her words in my head.
“…I still don’t know if I like you. But I can honestly say that I want to see you again. I think you’re probably more special to me than anyone else.”
My response was still vague.
I couldn’t help but laugh at myself. However, everything I said was my true feelings, there was no deception or evasion.
Surely if I continued to get to know her, I would be able to find the answer that lay ahead.
“For our first date, this was great. Next time, I’ll make you say you like me, so be prepared, okay?” (T/N: Yuzuki!!!!)
Yuzuki nodded with satisfaction as she continued speaking, and said this with a fearless smile.
I could really feel her resolve, or rather her strength, in her eyes as she looked straight at me.
And just like that, my time with Kotobuki Yuzuki came to an end, and as I was waiting in front of the ticket gate at the station, my name was called exactly at two o’clock.
“Did I make you wait long?”
“Not really.”
Kotobuki Hikari appeared, her brown hair swaying. Judging from her slightly irregular breathing, she must have run from the train.
She was wearing a white shirt and shorts. Her whole legs were wrapped in black tights. She didn’t look cold because she was wearing something like a thin cardigan.
It was the same with Yuzuki, but seeing my classmates in their casual clothes made me feel a bit uneasy.
“Well then, let’s get going. The second session of our fun date starts now!”
◇
“……”
“By the way, is there anything you want to see, Ao?”
We went to the theater.
I was here just a few hours ago, but I decided to keep that a secret for now.
“Well, anything other than this.”
I said, pointing at “Happy Death Parade” from among the posters lined up.
“You don’t like scary things?”
“Well, it’s just that I’ve already seen that one.”
“Really? By the way, this is the one I want to see!”
The movie Hikari pointed to was “Brave Max.”
I’d seen the trailer for it on TV. It’s supposed to be a story about the friendship between a heartless robot and the main character, a boy.
It has a strong action element, and I was also quite interested in it.
“Sounds good to me.”
“Really?”
“I wouldn’t lie to you.”
When I said that, Hikari laughed softly and said, “Yay!” in clear delight.
“By the way, this is a little late, but…”
“Yes?”
As I headed towards the ticket booth, I decided to ask something that had been bothering me. Hikari, who had been walking in high spirits a little ahead of me, turned to look at me.
“Why did you decide on the theater?”
I bet she didn’t expect the location to overlap with Yuzuki’s. They could have at least talked about where we would be going yesterday.
Yuzuki chose the date based on information she found online that said “movie first-date,” but if Hikari has the same reason… There’s nothing I can say but I’m impressed by this pair of twins.
But…
“Well, I just wanted to see a movie. Is there something wrong with that?”
Hikari said with a confused look on her face and a tone of voice that sounded like she wanted to ask what I was talking about.
“It’s our first date, you know? Don’t you want to make it a fun memory?”
“Of course.”
“Look, we don’t really know much about each other yet, right? If I want Ao to like me, I need him to get to know me first.”
“So you chose a movie?”
Yes, Hikari answered cheerfully.
“My image of Ao is that he reads a lot of books. But I don’t read that much. However, I do watch movies. Since it’s still about experiencing a story, I thought a movie would be a good way to share that with you.”
My image of Hikari is that she doesn’t think too deeply about things. That she’s the complete opposite of Yuzuki.
So I was honestly surprised that she was thinking things through quite well.
“Was it a bad idea?”
“No, I was just surprised.”
Like that, we went to the ticket machine and bought tickets for the next screening. It was 30 minutes from now, so we had some free time.
However, the time was a little too short to go anywhere, so I was wondering what we could do.
“I guess I’ll just use the restroom for now.”
“Yeah.”
There was nothing to do, so I went to the restroom. After that, we looked around the merchandise area and chatted aimlessly, killing time.
Time passed surprisingly quickly, and finally, the theater for the movie we were going to see opened. Even if we went in now, we’d have to wait for the movie to start, but that couldn’t be helped.
“The theater is open now, shall we go in?”
“Oh, can I get some popcorn first?”
“You’re getting popcorn?”
“Popcorn is a must for movies!”
I went along with Hikari to buy some popcorn. Since we were already at the counter, I decided to grab a drink for myself too.
Hikari bought a large size, and we entered the theater a little early.
The seats in a movie theater are quite close together, so you end up being close to each other. Maybe that’s why people say it’s a good place for a first date.
In any case, my heart was pounding.
Having a cute girl sitting next to me was not something I could easily get used to.
As I was fidgeting, Hikari, wondering what was going on, turned towards me and tilted her head.
“Is something wrong?”
“It’s nothing.”
I tried to brush it off, and Hikari seemed to accept that with a look that said “okay, then.” Then, she smiled happily.
“I’m feeling a bit nervous being so close to Ao!”
Seeing Hikari say that with a slight blush on her cheeks, I blushed even more. My face is probably burning, it feels so hot.
“…Yeah, me too.”
