Chapter 1 – One Minute Before Fate Changes
“Someone collapsed!”
I heard a voice from somewhere.
As I was walking through the city, I suddenly stopped, and my sister next to me also stopped at the same time.
“Onii-chan, it’s over there!”
My sister, Kirishima Shuka, pointed in a different direction than the one we were going in. There was already a group of people there, and it was obvious that something had happened.
Shuka ran ahead of me, and I followed.
Seriously…
Whenever we go out on a day off, something always goes wrong.
◇
“Hey, Onii-chan.”
Shuka called out to me as she entered my room, using her soprano voice to sound as cute as possible.
“What’s the matter? I always tell you to knock before entering a room.”
“That doesn’t matter! There’s something more important I need to talk about!”
I had a question mark floating above my head at her pompous attitude. Although she has her hands on her hips, she isn’t scary at all because of her cuteness.
She has medium bob black hair cut above her shoulders. She has a baby face and is short, so she tends to look younger than she actually is, but she’s already a second-year middle school student.
“What is it?”
In contrast to Shuka’s cuteness that would make people think she’s an angel visiting from heaven, I, her older brother, Kirishima Ao, am a plain, introverted indoor-type guy.
“A friend at school told me about Onii-chan yesterday.”
I couldn’t help but wonder why Shuka looked so serious when she started to talk.
“What do you think she said?”
I thought about it for a while since Shuka asked. I crossed my arms and thought for a few seconds, humming.
“Something like me being super plain, is that it?”
“It’s not that! It’s something much more serious and disturbing!”
“I don’t get it, what are you talking about?”
“She said, ‘I saw Shuka-chan’s brother the other day and his clothes were really lame, even though he’s already in high school’!”
Shuka spoke in a strangely dramatic tone.
“I wonder when exactly she saw me. What a bad timing.”
“Stop acting like you usually dress fine but were just unlucky that one time! Onii-chan, you’re consistently unfashionable 365 days a year, non-stop!”
“You really think it’s that bad!?”
I think I’m definitely the type who doesn’t care about my clothes.
To be honest, I spend the whole day in whatever shirt and pants I randomly pull out of my closet.
My first priority is being comfortable in the summer, warm in the winter, and anything that feels “right” in spring and fall. I don’t really care about anything else.
“What’s that outfit you’re wearing today?”
“Eh, this?”
I’m wearing a purple shirt with a skull on it. I don’t think there’s anything strange about it. In fact, I even thought it looked cool.
“Is there something wrong with this?”
“The skull is bad!”
“Huh!?”
I was surprised by her quick response.
I thought the skull was a big plus point. Would something like a dragon have looked better?
“Onii-chan’s clothes are either ones with ugly prints or ones with meaningless roman letters written on them. They’re all really lame!”
“Hey, that’s rude.”
Well, I haven’t bought any new clothes for about a year. I basically use all my pocket money to buy novels.
“Do you meet your high school friends wearing those lame clothes?”
“No, that’s not true.”
“Hmm, then what do you wear? You never wear anything but those lame clothes. Ah, your uniform?”
“I never go out and meet my high school friends in the first place.”
“It’s already the second semester! Now that you mention it, you’ve been a shut-in all summer!”
“That’s not true! I went to the bookstore some times.”
“That’s just preparation to shut yourself in! Onii-chan is too much of a loner!”
Shuka started whining, pretending to cry as she rattled off her complaints. I wish she’d understand that I have feelings too. I’m not a punching bag. I’m a human with a heart.
“So, what is this about?”
The conversation was going off track, so I urged her to get to the point. It was a precious day off, and I didn’t want to spend the whole day listening to my sister’s complaints.
I still had a lot of novels to finish.
“Let’s go clothes shopping.”
“You want me to carry your stuff?”
“We’re going clothes shopping for you, Onii-chan!”
“Huh? Why?”
“Because your clothes are super lame! I don’t want my friends to say bad things about you!”
Eh, that’s really bothersome.
I’m the type of person who doesn’t care about people talking bad about me behind my back.
If someone said something to my face, sure, I’d take it into consideration, but I can’t be bothered worrying about what others think if it’s not directly said to me.
And besides, it’s not like I’m a loner or anything.
“I don’t have any money left this month.”
“I asked Mom and borrowed some pocket money, so it’s fine.”
“Wait, are you giving me a present?”
“Of course not. It’s your pocket money!”
“Mine!?”
“Of course,” Shuka snorted.
This girl is stubborn. The more comfortable she feels around you, the less likely she’s to budge on her opinions.
And Shuka has never gone back on her word with me. Huh, she’s kind of like Naruto…
It’s not so much that I’m letting her have her way, it just feels like she doesn’t take me seriously.
Either way, it’s going to be very difficult to get Shuka to change her mind, so it’s less troublesome if I just obediently do what she wants.
“Well, if that’s what you want, let’s just get going.”
“Don’t walk next to me wearing those clothes.”
“You want me to go out naked? I don’t have any other clothes.”
“Wear your uniform.”
“But it’s a holiday…”
Resigned, I put on my uniform even though it was a holiday and left the house with Shuka.
As we walked side by side to a nearby shopping mall, I heard a surprised man’s voice from a little distance away, saying,
“Someone collapsed!”

T/N: Hmm, what’s a highschooler gonna do in a situation like this? Guessing from the title, it’s either he’s studying to be a doctor, or his parents are doctors…
Anyway, another new novel from yours truly. No, I didn’t start this novel with the hope of shimaidon, muehehe… Well, maybe I did, don’t judge me pls. Maybe even oyakodon?!!! No, that’s a stretch… or is it?
