The Whispers of a Yandere - Chapter 44, Echoes Of The Forgotten! 2
The doorbell chime echoed throughout the house, breaking the silence.
Kato and Hana exchanged a glance, their expressions reflecting their underlying tension.
Sora, who was lost in thought, jolted from his trance.
He quickly went towards the entrance to welcome the guest, and his parents followed.
His hand barely reached the lock, turned it with a slight tremor.
As the door creaked open, Sora’s heart skipped a beat as he saw his Uncle, Kenji, standing in the doorway with a small bag in his hand.
The smirk on his face was evident even in the dim light, his eyes glinting with a mix of malice and anticipation.
Kenji’s expression shifted before Kato and Hana could see him, displaying an innocent smile.
As Sora opened the door wider, Kenji stepped inside with exaggerated cheerfulness, his smile never wavering.
“Well, if it isn’t my dear nephew!” he said, his voice laced with ‘affection’.
Sora kept his silence, not knowing what to say. He could count the times he had met his uncle on one finger, so he still felt uncomfortable with that level of affection.
“Happy birthday! How old are you now? Ten?” Kenji ruffled Sora’s hair.
“Six,” He replied, trembling uncomfortably from Kenji’s touch.
“Ah, yes! Time really flies, doesn’t it?”
He said, glancing at Kato with a smile that didn’t reach his eyes.
“It’s good to be here, brother,”
“Glad you could make it,”
Kato replied, trying to keep his voice neutral.
He moved close to the door to close it, subtly placing his hand between Kenji and Sora.
Kenji directed his gaze towards Hana, “So, what’s the plan? Any leftover cake for me?”
His tone was humorous, but the way his gaze darted across the room felt predatory.
“We have brought some food from the restaurant,”
Hana said, quickly stepping into the kitchen.
On the other hand, Kenji’s expression darkened, ‘The restaurant…’
—
“Business is going well, I assume?”
Kenji questioned, leaning back against the living room couch.
“Yeah… We’re managing, it has been steady,” Kato nodded stiffly.
Kenji chuckled, “Steady, eh? Must be nice having such an amazing life, everything handed to you on a silver platter,”
Kato’s jaw clenched, “I worked for it, Kenji. You of all people should know it,”
“Ah yes, worked, mhm,” Kenj’s mockery was clear.
“*Sigh* Not again, please, not on Sora’s birthday,”
Kato lowered his voice to not draw Sora’s attention.
“Yeah, don’t worry, I am not here to argue, just here for my nephew’s birthday, I even have a present for him!”
He glanced at Sora, his smile creeping back.
Kenji’s smile remained as he glanced around the room, his eyes subtly scanning everything.
Kato’s patience was wearing thin, but he knew he had to keep things civil.
“We appreciate the gesture,”
Kenji stood up, picking up his bag.
His casual posture seemed very domineering to Sora as Kenji’s gaze lingered with a strange excitement.
“Why don’t I give him the present right now?” Kenji chuckled.
Kato tensed, glazing at Kenji’s back, something felt off, but before he could object, Kenji had already reached Sora.
“Here, look at this,”
He said, parting the bag for Sora to take a look at.
Sora, though nervous, nervously looked inside the bag.
“…Knife?” He whispered, as soon as Kato heard the word, his face turned pale.
