Volume 02 Chapter 23: The Job Assignment Problem
Side: Filia
Right now, I’m learning blacksmithing from Naruja-san, the Fairy Tribe’s Elder.
Today, as per Nii-sama’s schedule, we had a job explanation followed by light practice, so I joined the Fairy Tribe members assigned to blacksmithing.
I’m thrilled!!
The Fairy Tribe, like Dwarves, is a race skilled at crafting.
They can imbue weapons with magic through special methods, creating enchanted gear.
Sadly, I don’t remember anything about my parents or life in the Dwarf village.
So, I can’t actually do blacksmithing as a Dwarf.
Nii-sama has high hopes for me as a Dwarf, and I’ve felt guilty for not being able to do anything.
That’s why learning blacksmithing from Naruja-san will let me help Nii-sama!!
And then, I’ll bear Nii-sama’s baby!!
Asrin-chan, being human, can’t safely have children while she’s small, but Dwarves are naturally petite, so it’s no problem.
That means I can handle Nii-sama’s desires before Asrin-chan!!
Nii-sama’s so kind, he’ll surely embrace me gently and do all sorts of things.
But in reality, Nii-sama doesn’t use us for his physical needs.
I wondered if he wasn’t interested, but that’s not it.
One night, while Nii-sama was asleep, I secretly touched his important part, and it grew in my hand.
Labiris-chan noticed and said it’d be pitiful to leave it like that, so we helped ease Nii-sama together.
It tasted strange, but knowing it was Nii-sama’s made me happy.
That made me wonder why Nii-sama doesn’t touch us.
Labiris-chan explained, “Yuki’s doing his best to protect us. Once we grow a bit more, he’ll feel safe loving us.”
I think Labiris-chan’s right.
Right now, we three, along with the other six and the 57 new Fairy Tribe members, are being carefully protected by Nii-sama.
With so much on his plate, he doesn’t have time for that kind of thing with us.
That’s why I’ll borrow the Fairy Tribe’s help to lighten Nii-sama’s load!!
And then he can love us without holding back!!
Oh, but even now, Labiris-chan, Asrin-chan, Ratsu-san, and I relieve Nii-sama’s needs almost daily.
It’s after Labiris-chan uses her sleep magic to make Nii-sama sleep soundly, though.
Labiris-chan says if we don’t, he’ll take care of it himself!!
That’s no good!! I won’t let Nii-sama’s baby-making stuff go to waste in a tissue!!
If anyone treats it like that, even Nii-sama, I won’t forgive them!! It should at least go in our mouths!!
I thought about letting it go inside… but Labiris-chan said, “Yuki would be shocked, so stop,” so I didn’t.
She’s right. If I woke up and found out I had Nii-sama’s baby, I’d be a bit upset.
I want him to do it properly, when I’m awake…
Anyway, tonight I’ll lick Nii-sama’s thing again!! I’m excited!!
“You okay, Filia-chan?”
I snap back to reality as Naruja-san peers at my face.
“Oh, sorry! I’m fine!!”
Oh no, oh no. I’m supposed to be learning blacksmithing.
“Really? Don’t push yourself. Yuki-san told me to take care of you, though it feels a bit overprotective.”
“Geez, Nii-sama!!”
“Hehe… you seem fine. But like Yuki-san said, you’ve got talent. You don’t know anything, yet you swing the hammer at hot iron without hesitation. That’s the Dwarf blood in you, maybe? Most beginners would be cautious.”
Naruja-san praises my iron-forging.
But I’m just doing it normally, so I don’t really get it.
I want to make a sword like the ones Nii-sama summoned with DP!!
“…Blacksmithing is about putting your heart into what you make. You might not understand now, but I can tell. Maybe it’s because emotions flow into your magic? Filia-chan, calm down. I know you want to grow quickly for Yuki-san. But when crafting, you can’t neglect a single piece. The hammer you swing lacks feeling, lacks heart.”
“…I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay. Let’s learn properly. That’ll surely help Yuki-san.”
“Yes!!”
After that, I swung the hammer so intently I lost track of time.
I only stopped when Naruja-san called out to me.
On the way back, we talked about Nii-sama, who’s not here.
“Speaking of, I haven’t seen Yuki-san today. Do you know where he is, Filia-chan?”
“Yes. Nii-sama’s been helping Lulua-sama since this morning.”
“Oh, I see. That’s tough. Should I talk to him tomorrow…?”
“Is something up? If it’s important, we can contact Nii-sama.”
“You’re right, Filia-chan. Shall we head to the shop?”
I went with Naruja-san to “Super Ratsu,” where Ratsu-san is the shopkeeper.
Super Ratsu is a convenient store with all sorts of food and goods.
It’s the only shop open besides the training facility’s store, since we’re short on staff.
Super Ratsu is bigger than any shop I’ve ever seen.
Normally, shops are like remodeled houses, right?
But Super Ratsu, as Nii-sama said, lives up to its “super” name—it’s huge.
It’s the size of four or five houses, packed with goods.
I worried about theft, but at the checkout (?), they scan a barcode (?), and if you leave without paying, you’re paralyzed by a forced paralysis system, so no worries!!
As I think about this, the automatic door opens, and we step inside…
“Wow, amazing!! This looks delicious!!”
“Hey, it’s frozen food. What’s that?”
“You heard yesterday. You heat it in the microwave in your room.”
“Amazing! This paper’s pure white!!”
“Look at this! The pen’s not black!?”
Voices like that echo throughout the store. Fairy Tribe members, done with work, are shopping, and the place is packed.
Oh, about shopping money: to teach them how to use money, we gave each person five silver coins from the dungeon’s savings.
“Alright, line up here for checkout!!”
“Milly, we’re out of stock!! Where is it!?”
“Chocolate’s in the warehouse, left side…!!”
“Checkout’s 13 fol. One silver coin and three copper coins.”
“Oh no!!”
Everyone’s busy.
Since everyone knew I was interested in blacksmithing, they happily sent me off, but… I feel awkward not helping.
Today, Ratsu-san, Eris-san, Milly-san, Labiris-chan, and Asrin-chan are running the store.
Tori-san and the others are busy cleaning the training facility, preparing dinner, or staffing the facility’s shop.
“Oh my, it’s gotten like this, hasn’t it?”
“You knew?”
“Well, vaguely. This place is so different from the outside, right?”
“Yes.”
“So, their first time shopping is exciting. The more they learn about this dungeon, the more thrilled they get. But in a way, this is good.”
“Why’s that?”
“Rocheur’s people are bringing over 300 residents, right? If things stay like this, Ratsu-san and the others will collapse. We planned to let residents choose jobs freely, but until things stabilize, we’ll need to secure staff, even if it’s forced.”
“I see.”
Naruja-san’s right. Most Fairy Tribe members will likely want blacksmithing or crafting jobs.
But that leaves no one to run the shops or bath facilities.
If 300 more people arrive, things will fall apart.
This is bad!! If everyone collapses, it’s over!! I need to talk to Nii-sama!!
“Come on, shall we help? Filia-chan, can you handle that checkout?”
“I can use it, but I can’t calculate money… It does it automatically, but Nii-sama said it’s safer to do it yourself…”
“Don’t worry. I’ll calculate.”
“Got it!! Ratsu-san!! Naruja-san’s helping, so I’ll open another checkout!!”
Ratsu-san seems to notice us for the first time when I call out.
“Oh, Filia-chan, welcome back! And thank you!! Open checkout two, please!! Eris, direct the crowd!!”
“Yes, everyone, another checkout’s open, so use your judgment and move to this one!!”
As we open the checkout, tons of Fairy Tribe members come with baskets full of snacks.
“Let’s do this!”
“Yes!!”
We somehow close the shop, eat dinner, and report to Nii-sama.
“Ugh, it was too much, huh?”
“Yeah, more than expected. The supermarket’s a huge draw, but we’re critically short on staff. Thanks to the Fairy Tribe, we figured that out. If this happened when the full migration started, I’d be sleeping in my bedding permanently. No way.”
Ratsu-san looks exhausted.
No wonder—she was restocking and checking sales even after closing.
“By the way, how’s that issue we were worried about?”
“Oh, that. Thanks to the anti-theft system, no theft, but three people got hit with paralysis because we forgot to scan their items. I feel terrible.”
“That’s really unfortunate. I’ll apologize to them later too.”
“No need. I already explained it to them.”
“Thank you, Elder.”
“As for checkout, no miscalculations so far. The auto-calculation doesn’t mess up. If payments get more complex, mistakes might happen, though…”
“That’s something to monitor. Errors usually happen when you’re busy or distracted, giving or receiving the wrong amount.”
“True, not much we can do there. Just keep awareness high.”
Phew, no money mistakes. Good thing Naruja-san helped.
“So, the main issue is staffing, huh? I can think of two solutions. One, limit the number of people in the store. Two, sorry, but ask the Fairy Tribe to work as shop staff, almost mandatorily. What do you think, Elder? With their numbers, I’d like their cooperation…”
“Yes, I see this as a great chance to repay your kindness, so I have no objections. But I’d like to add a condition.”
“What’s that?”
“It’s embarrassing, but… many fools spent all their silver coins and personal money at the shop. I’d like those who work to receive a daily wage. I understand your finances. This was my oversight. I’m sorry.”
“…Ratsu, today’s sales?”
“Yes, 8,561 fol. Eight platinum coins, five gold coins, six silver coins, one copper coin.”
“And the amount we gave out was…?”
“Five silver coins per person, 57 people, so 2,850 fol. Two platinum coins, eight gold coins, five silver coins. Even subtracting that, the Fairy Tribe spent 5,711 fol out of pocket. That’s about 100 fol per person, roughly a gold coin each today.”
“Pfft, that’s wild.”
“Yeah. I set prices high to discourage buying, but they didn’t hesitate. Fairy Tribe’s loaded, huh?”
“Ugh, how embarrassing. It’s their own fault, but waiting for uncertain paychecks…”
“Could lead to complaints.”
“Exactly. If wages aren’t paid for a while, it’ll cause trouble down the line.”
Nii-sama and the others talk about complicated stuff for a long time.
But I’m happy today.
Why? Because among us three kids, we have a rule.
We take turns sitting on Nii-sama’s lap!!
Today’s my day!! Nii-sama’s petting my head while talking!!
It feels so good. So tonight, I’ll make sure to return the favor!!
“For now, we need to set daily wages starting tomorrow…”
“But, Onii-san, we’re aiming for a monthly salary system, right? We explained that too…”
“Then, since we’ve already calculated wages, those who overspent can wait until next month…”
“…Then… um…”
Yawn, I’m getting sleepy.
Nii-sama’s voice is fading.
I shouldn’t fall asleep…
