Volume 02 Chapter 05: Meeting, Second Half
Side: Yuki
Eris hit the nail on the head with the first thing to consider. Impressive, as expected.
From here, the discussion will likely build on the earlier ideas.
For now, I jot down “・Land Selection” on the whiteboard. Eris continues.
“I have one more point. In addition to land selection, we need to discuss with Rocheur Kingdom’s representative how many immigrants will come. We should plan based on those numbers.”
“Yeah, Eris is right. We can’t prepare without knowing how many people are coming. That’ll also depend on how much aid we get from Selaria once she arrives.”
“・Immigration Details.” Scribble, scribble…
“Next, from your favorite, me,” Ratsu says. “We’re aiming for residents to be self-sufficient, but left alone, they’d focus on farming or hunting. That’s no different from a rural village. So, building on Tori’s recreational facilities, I propose employing slaves as slaves to run them. Pay them wages, let them earn enough to buy their freedom. Also, we should use DP to set up various shops from the start and have residents buy goods there. Naturally, we’d employ slaves in those shops too. Same with farmland. Instead of telling them to till from scratch, leasing ready-made fields would kickstart the village or town’s activity.
In short, we bring slaves here but don’t free them immediately. By having them work for a set period, we instill a sense of self-reliance. Honestly, without Tori’s idea, I’d have just said to till fields from scratch. DP should be used effectively. For this, we’ll need a decent amount of funds. So, securing financial aid from Rocheur Kingdom is crucial.”
Makes sense. Ratsu’s got a point.
I was thinking of having them start farming from nothing too.
But that wouldn’t feel like a new start, would it? DP should be used smartly.
And we’ll need money… Life’s tough.
-
- Slave Employment
-
- DP Utilization (Heavy Initial Investment in Shops, etc.)
-
- Funding for Employment (Rocheur Aid as Plan A, DP-Made Precious Metals for Cash as Plan B)
I write these on the whiteboard. Milly’s up next.
“I have one thing to confirm. As Yuki-san said, if we’re running the village or town, we’ll also ask future residents for their opinions, right?”
“Yeah, you’ve all realized one person’s ideas aren’t enough. Going forward, we’ll need a space to hear from more people.”
“Then we should create a meeting venue for that. Or at least find a way to gather opinions.”
“・Meeting Venue for Resident Input.” And…
“Good point. Like with you all, they won’t know what to do at first, so we’ll need to guide them.”
“Yes, and the next one’s a bit hard to say…”
Milly looks awkward.
“Just say it. It’s free to share, and even if it’s off, others will correct it. That’s what meetings are for.”
“Then I’ll say it. I request public disclosure of dungeon operations to residents.”
The room tenses for a moment.
Her statement could be seen as defiance against me.
“Give your reasons. That alone won’t convince everyone.”
“Yes. It’s widely known that dungeons run on cores, but most people don’t understand what stopping a core means. We’ve felt this dungeon’s safety and utility through Yuki-san’s explanations. But residents living self-sufficiently here might think stopping the core is safer. Without disclosure, some might try to destroy it.”
Milly’s got a point.
It’s entirely possible people would try to stop the core for safety.
Only those here know it’s safe. Generally, cores are seen as the root of all evil in dungeons.
“Milly’s right. But just disclosing it won’t stop people from wanting to take the core. It’s not like the dungeon becomes unlivable right away.”
“Yes. That’s why we let them experience that facilities like Tori’s open-air bath stop if the core does. Drying up wells or rivers would work too. That way, residents will see the core as essential and take the lead in protecting it.”
Using residents as a voluntary defense for the core, huh?
That’d make rebellions unlikely—or impossible.
If the core’s gone, they can’t live here…
Still, outsiders who dislike dungeons might try to hold the core hostage or steal it. It’d be better if residents actively defend it.
For now, no other nation sees this place as a threat, and adventurers don’t know about it. Soon, Selaria will declare it a safe dungeon under Elju’s holy prayer.
“・Dungeon Core Explanation (For Resident Peace of Mind).” I write it down. Ratsu chimes in.
“I have an addition to Milly’s idea, okay, Onii-san?”
“Hm, any issues?”
“No. Why not report DP income and expenses and hold meetings to let residents decide some DP uses? It’d help them feel the core’s importance and see we can make useful things with DP. As representatives, we’d be viewed favorably. They’d see DP being used for their wishes, clear proof they’re running things.”
Everyone nods or murmurs agreement at Ratsu’s addition.
“・DP Allocation for Residents (To Boost Morale).” And…
“One last thing. It’s hard to call the dungeon itself a recreational facility, but could we use it as a regular dungeon for publicity? It could attract adventurers.”
A very Milly idea, coming from her adventurer guild background.
“I’ve thought about that too. I’ll explain later, but in short, I’m thinking of giving each group here a dungeon core to create their own dungeon. Sounds weird—a dungeon in a dungeon—but it’d be good for training or tweaking, appealing to novice adventurers.”
“Nice!! That sounds fun!! Let me make one too!!”
Mauve finally reacts.
“Alright, alright. Later. Let’s finish the meeting first.”
“・Mini-Dungeons to Attract Adventurers.”
That wraps up Eris’s group. Pretty substantial.
They hit a lot of blind spots for me.
Meetings are key, huh.
“Last but not least, Elju’s group. Got anything? You wrote a lot.”
All eyes turn to Elju’s group. Milly and Kaya look like they want to complain but hold back, understanding the meeting’s purpose.
“Yes. First, I’m grateful to participate. This meeting has given me a lot to think about.”
Elju bows deeply.
“For my part, could we have doctors in the dungeon? Even under Yuki-san’s management, injuries are inevitable.”
“Obviously. But hiring doctors or healers…”
“No need to hire. Use me and Lulua-sama. As former Saintesses, we can be useful.”
Elju says, but Milly quickly objects.
“With respect, you Saintesses are supposed to be dead. Showing yourselves could disrupt dungeon operations. I’d rather you didn’t.”
Fair point. Even rumors of them being alive would cause trouble.
“…I get Milly’s point. But hear me out, no anger. I support Elju-sama and Lulua-sama’s healing. Since they’re thought dead, a haircut and glasses could make them unrecognizable. Healing doesn’t always need grand magic. Plus, if someone acts suspiciously because of their presence, it’d reveal outside interference.”
Eris says, and Ratsu reacts.
“That’s it, huh? Create a potential problem point on purpose. Knowing where trouble might arise makes it easier to handle. With [Designated Protection], no one can use force here, so it’s safe.”
“Yes.”
Eris nods at Ratsu’s explanation.
Hmm, using them as bait. I’d considered it, but it’s up to them.
“That’s the idea. If Elju and Lulua are okay with it, we’ll set up a hospital or clinic for them to run. But this goes for everyone—there’s no absolute safety.”
“What do you mean? With Yuki-sama’s [Designated Protection], no one can use force in the dungeon, right?”
Lulua raises a question.
“You think no force equals safety. Think about the loopholes. In this dungeon, force is impossible… meaning—”
“It’s possible outside. If we’re kidnapped while sleeping and taken out, it’s doable.”
“Oriel, correct. That said, I’ll give everyone warp rings for safety, set to teleport to this banquet hall. But it’s not foolproof. If you’re taken outside and killed before using the ring, that’s it.”
Everyone nods solemnly.
“Got sidetracked. So, Elju and Lulua, you good?”
“Yes.”
“Understood.”
Alright. “・Medical Facility.”
“Next, me. No one mentioned this, so I’ll say it. We need a patrol team for security. Like Ratsu said, employ slaves for it.”
Oriel’s idea is a no-brainer. Even with few people, a patrol team—or self-defense corps—is necessary. “・Patrol Team Establishment and Base.”
No objections. Too safe a suggestion, Oriel. Lastly, Lulua.
“For me, we should plan the village or town’s zoning now.”
Everyone looks confused by Lulua’s idea.
Fair. Only those with experience running a town would get it.
“Right, Lulua means separating residential and work areas to manage people better. Haven’t you seen it in towns around here? Like, noble districts being separate?”
“Yeah, there was that… So, building things randomly causes issues?”
“Exactly. For example, a noisy tavern next to homes would keep residents awake.”
“True.”
“Zoning helps ensure safety during problems. Say there’s a residential district. Which is worse—a fire during the day or at night?”
“Night, obviously. Everyone’s home sleeping. Oh, that’s clear. During the day, people are in work districts, right?”
Through my exchange with Ratsu, everyone seems to grasp Lulua’s point.
Also, it prevents weird spaces, like slums.
“Alright, that’s most of the ideas. Now, let’s decide what to tackle first. Speak up if something’s needed. Adding things after the town’s built is the biggest hassle.”
I move the whiteboard to the center for everyone to see.
