Chapter 8: The Man Who Beat the Odds

Cerberus’ life came to an end with Ryuuto’s magic. The massive ice sculpture before him emitted sharp cracking sounds as countless fractures spread across its surface. Within the next instant, Cerberus shattered to fine pieces along with an especially loud explosion. Fine ice fragments turned into mist, drifting down into the vast cavern. The temperature inside the cave plummeted sharply. Despite wearing only a fur loincloth, Ryuuto’s well-trained upper body remained completely unaffected by the cold. Ryuuto was standing still, unfazed by the drop of the temperature.

“Ah, how refreshing.”

It felt like having an ice shaver placed above his head. Covered in countless falling ice shards, Ryuuto’s body turned pure white in an instant.

“Brrr…”

Ryuuto whipped his body vigorously from side to side, shaking himself off like a drenched dog. It was the so-called “Shriba Drill.” Ryuuto spun his body so violently at a high speed that to others, his afterimage might’ve looked like an actual drill.

“Ah, crap. Speaking of which, is Haruka okay?”

“Kyuu…”

He glanced at Haruka, who was still safely secured in his arm.  It seemed she had passed out from being unable to keep up with the intense battle. Perhaps she was simply unconscious, but she didn’t show any signs of waking up even after Ryuuto poked her a bit. 

Maybe… Maybe I could touch her chest right now without her noticing…?

Those sinful thoughts hadn’t crossed his mind during the battle, but now, holding her princess-style in his arms, the presence of her warm, breathing body was downright intoxicating. Especially certain parts of her body, like her chest and ass.

“Just a little touch won’t hurt…”

“Mmmh…”

He pressed his index finger against a certain spot of Haruka that seemed to stand out more than the other. Of course, her body was covered with the thick fabric of her armor, which was designed for defense, but Haruka reacted a bit. She moaned lowly. 

Ugh!!

Ryuuto could immediately feel the tension building up in a certain part of body.

No, not yet. It’s not nighttime yet. Sleep time is still far off. Good kids and bad kids alike, keep your eyes wide open until morning. It’s fever time until dawn!

“Ah, crap. I made a big blunder. Did I break this thing?”

Ryuuto said as he fiddled with the smartphone attached to the end of Haruka’s selfie stick. The phone had multiple reasons for malfunctioning, but the biggest culprit was likely the sudden temperature change. The delicate parts of the smartphone had been affected by the aftermath of the ice magic Ryuuto had used. It was similar to how extreme cold could disrupt electronic devices. After staring at the phone for a while, Ryuuto lost interest and stopped fiddling with it.

“Well, it’ll probably fix itself eventually. The cell phone just got chilly for a bit. That’s all.”

Having been away from the advancement of electronic devices for years, Ryuuto didn’t suffer from the modern human disease known as smartphone addiction. Fortunately for him, the smartphone did eventually regain its functionality. 

“Now then, what should I do…”

Still carrying Haruka under one arm, Ryuuto pondered his options. At his level, Cerberus was hardly a significant threat. He didn’t feel concerned about Cerberus. He was more concerned about what Haruka had said before. If this place was close to the surface as Haruka had claimed, then the exit must be near. 

“The surface, huh…”

He had almost given up returning to the surface. Ryuuto had fought tirelessly with the hope of returning to the surface to see the people he longed for what felt like an eternity. His family and the comrades he had parted ways with after defeating the Demon Lord were the people he wanted to see the most. 

The fact that he had climbed from the deepest floor of the dungeon to this was because Ryuuto had never once allowed himself to give up. And now… His wish was finally about to come true. Suddenly, the face of a certain girl flashed through his mind. He had decided that he would confess to her after their final battle against the Demon Lord. Ryuuto had told his mischievous childhood friend and comrade, Shougen Genma, about this. 

“That’s a death flag if I’ve ever seen one.”

“It’s not a death flag!”

Shougen had laughed at him, but Ryuuto insisted he would confess his feelings to her. They had even made a bet. Naturally, Ryuuto had wagered on his own survival. That bet was nothing more but a silly bet of Ryuuto teenage self before the decisive battle, but it turned out… The odds of him dying were far greater than his survival. 

“Heh. You idiot… I won the bet, Shougen.”
