Chapter 59: The Appearance of the Beautiful Security Guard
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
It was a night sky where beautiful stars could be seen with naked eyes. The restoration of the city, which had been destroyed by monsters, had progressed considerably, but it was still far from complete. Many places remained in ruins, too devastated to look at. As a result, during the late-night hours, electricity was often cut off in many households to regulate power supply.
Walking along the riverside, Ryuuto noticed that the air in the city was much clearer than before. Even though the darkness was deep, for someone like Ryuuto, who had spent long periods of time inside dungeons, it was as bright as midday. There was a scent of water in the air. It wasn’t exactly fresh, but it wasn’t so artificial as to be unpleasant either.
He stood there for a while, letting the night wind blow against him. The government vehicle assigned for his transport was waiting nearby. The driver, a highly skilled female bodyguard, was likely anxious about him lingering in such a deserted place.
Deciding to cut his stargazing short, Ryuuto returned to the car. When they reached near his high-rise apartment, he had the driver drop him off a short distance away from the apartment building. There were people around here, and the area was safe. He just felt like walking a little more.
On his way, he noticed a small gaze upon him. It was close by. Right in front of a convenience store. A dog was there.
When Ryuuto turned his eyes toward the dog, the dog raised its head as if it were looking at something entirely mysterious to it. He couldn’t quite place its breed. It was a large dog, a fluffy one at that. If he had to describe it, “fluffy dog” might be the best term. At the very least, Ryuuto didn’t sense any Japanese dog lineage in it. The fluffy dog remained silent, tied to a metal post in front of the convenience store. It was remarkably well-behaved for a dog.
“Yo, how’s it going?”
Of course, the fluffy dog didn’t respond to his question. Ryuuto hesitated for about thirty seconds, debating whether to enter the store. But he decided against it, thinking that he’d rather not risk running into another crazy woman like the one from the other day.
“See you later, little guy.”
His home, the high-rise apartment, was just around the corner. The night had grown late. He felt a light fatigue settling on his shoulders. A faint dampness touched the tips of his hair.
“Rain?”
He looked up. Raindrops were pattering lightly against his cheeks. It had started to drizzle. He hurried toward his apartment. Tapping his IC card, he passed through security and rushed into the entrance.
“Welcome back, Ryuuto-sama.”
“Ah. Yahaha. I’m home, Yoriko-san.”
The female security guard greeted him with a refined smile adorning her face. Being a high-end tower residence, of course the building’s security was top-notch. Even though it was nearly midnight, Yoriko, the female security guard, stood at her post without the slightest sign of quiver. She stood there motionless, maintaining the highest form of discipline.
The female security guard was a woman in her early twenties named Yoriko Maezono, whom Ryuuto had recently become acquainted with. She was a former soldier from the National Defense Army, but after being injured in ground combat against monsters that had surfaced, she was discharged from duty. With the changes in the law, even private security officers were now permitted to carry firearms. The assault rifle hanging from her sling provided a great sense of security for the residents of this high-end tower residence. Donned in a security cap, Yoriko had a strikingly beautiful, slender figure. She was the very picture of discipline. She carried an air of elegance, reminiscent of a Takarazuka Revue actress.
Her eyelashes are long too. Seriously, she’s gorgeous.
She was standing quite close to him. When they had first met, she had been somewhat rigid, but after Ryuuto took the initiative to talk to her, she had gradually lowered her guard. Now, they were at least comfortable enough to engage in small talk. Yoriko seemed to be staring intently at Ryuuto’s damp hair.
“Did it rain? The forecast only showed a 10% chance… Oh, if you’d like, please use this.”
She handed him a handkerchief adorned with a cute floral pattern. It carried a faint, pleasant fragrance. She was probably offering it for him to dry off, but he found the thought of using the beautiful handkerchief almost too daunting.
“Huh? No. I will feel bad if I use it to wipe myself. I’ll be fine.”
“Is that so…?”
Ryuuto initially declined the handkerchief that Yoriko had kindly offered. However, when he saw her usually dignified yet slightly thick eyebrows droop ever so slightly in disappointment, he suddenly felt a pang of guilt for refusing.
“Alright then. I’ll borrow it for a bit. I’ll wash it and return it later to you.”
“Ah! No! You mustn’t wash it! Absolutely not!”
“Huh?”
“Ah, no, um… Ryuuto-san, please don’t worry about it. Once you’re done using it, just leave it in the laundry box near the elevator right away! I’ll go pick it up during my break, okay? So, you mustn’t wash it. Absolutely not! Oh, and don’t take it the wrong way! I just mean that it would be unthinkable to trouble Ryuuto-sama with something like that. There’s no deep meaning behind it, okay?! Just… Please leave it as is when you’re done wiping yourself!”
“…Alright.”
Since he was, in fact, wet, Ryuuto used Yoriko’s handkerchief to wipe the droplets off his face and neck. As he turned to the elevator, he waved his hand at her. Yoriko stood at attention and returned the gesture with a crisp salute.
What a kind person she is.
At that moment, that was all Ryuuto knew about Yoriko. That was the only impression he had of her, nothing more, nothing less.
