Chapter 83: Discovering the Planned Coup
“The protective barrier around the capital was made using the saint’s body…?”
Even Edward didn’t know this, and his voice was filled with surprise.
In the game, the barrier that was destroyed was later restored by the awakened saintess as if nothing happened. I thought this was just a convenient plot point, but there was a real reason behind it.
“A past sage who accessed fragments of the ancient sage’s writings, the Akashic Records, left these words: ‘The reincarnated saint will awaken in a certain year’—and that year is this one.”
Wendy continued.
“By using the awakened saint’s power, it’s possible to reestablish the protective barrier and change its authority.”
“What happens to the saint?”
In Edward’s route, Mariana used her awakened powers to restore the broken barrier.
In the epilogue, she is shown alive and helping Edward lead the country. So, she survives.
“I don’t know that much.”
Wendy shook her head at my words.
“But both the Pentagram and Slash families don’t care what happens to Patricia Kindred. Their goal is to gain control over the protective barrier and seize the throne.”
If Patricia’s goal isn’t just to replace the protagonist, but to also seize control of the protective barrier’s authority, it makes sense why she got rid of Edward.
She doesn’t want a reverse harem or anything like that; she wants the throne.
Patricia Kindred, you sure think big with your plan to take over the country.
I guess she might survive even after reestablishing the barrier.
A woman who can challenge those in power with just her knowledge of the game wouldn’t act unless she was confident she could survive.
“So, this month at the Sage Festival, Patricia Kindred will be revealed as the saintess and the barrier will be reestablished, right?”
“Exactly.”
First, it seems the attacks will start from the Principality. This will be the signal for the barrier to disappear, allowing Patricia to use her saintly power to revive the barrier and seize its authority.
Then, how will they take the throne? The protective barrier is a symbol of absolute safety for the people, and if they claim the current royal family neglected its maintenance, it would be enough to sway them.
It’s crazy how the stability of a country hinges on a single barrier.
Relying on such things makes you weak.
“What a scheme…”
While Patricia’s name was mentioned, Edward seemed to be piecing things together with a serious expression. Does he still have feelings for her?
“But the past is the past. Now is now. Becoming the Shadow of the Barbarian is just another twist of fate, Bwhaha!”
Well, it seems he doesn’t care much.
Patricia Kindred, what a ridiculous burden you’ve pushed onto me. Unbelievable.
“Hmm, I can’t imagine the neighboring Continent Principality will obediently listen to the Pentagram and Slash families, but Wendy, do you know anything about this?”
After laughing heartily, Edward suddenly became serious again. His mood swings were intense.
“I understand that the Principality, which was driven out of the capital by the royal family, has a motive to help with the coup. But I doubt they’d just hand over the throne to the marquis families after helping.”
I figured they would attack the moment the barrier disappeared. In the game, they always seemed to be looking for an opportunity to attack the capital.
“The Principality’s consensus is that they are ‘aiming for it.’ Once they were pushed outside the barrier, the blood pact was broken, so this is just speculation.”
Wendy further added,
“The Principality only cares about gaining control of the barrier. They’ve grown stronger without relying on it, using Brave’s blood.”
So they were using the Brave territory for military training. It seems there were dealings between the two countries, but it all traces back to the central conflict.
It doesn’t sit well with me, damn it.
“My role in Bloodweek was to ensure the Principality couldn’t act freely while the barrier was being reestablished. The marquis families are also wary, which is why they warned me to keep Brave off the stage.”
“It was a bad move since I wouldn’t have done anything if I didn’t know anything.”
Why did the marquis families leave behind such intriguing information as a parting shot? Do they hate the Brave family that much?
“Exactly. The marquis families despise the idea of the descendants of the sage, the saint, and the hero Brave uniting.”
“Haha, of course! If the Brave gets involved, they always stand out during chaos and end up defeating their enemies, ruining whatever plans were in place!”
Edward interrupted, puffing out his chest proudly as if talking about himself. Seeing this, Wendy showed a displeased expression before returning to her usual stoic look.
“Hero or whatever, what does that even mean?”
