Chapter 81: When an Idiot Uses a Forbidden Technique
“Cough, cough, gah… Phew, sorry for showing you something unsightly, but rest assured, I won’t die from this.”
Edward, wiping his mouth, boasted confidently.
Even receiving a blast of superheated flames head-on, he didn’t die because the quality of his clothing was too high.
Well, even without that, he seems tough to kill.
While applying healing magic to himself, Edward addressed Wednesday.
“So, what will you do? Let me ask again, if you are competent, there shouldn’t be any doubt about whose side to choose, right?”
Then, with a flourish of his special robe, he declared,
“Of course, it’s ours.”
“Why are you deciding on your own?”
Wednesday tilted her head at Edward’s forceful tone.
That’s right, fair point.
“I don’t want a weakling. If we are to form a blood pact, Brave would be more reliable due to their proven strength.”
“Ah, sorry, I’m all set with that sort of thing.”
As long as he doesn’t interfere, Edward can do as he pleases—it doesn’t really matter.
I’d rather not go out of my way to bind someone and make them submissive.
The Brave family takes pride in their duty to stand at the forefront.
Offering to risk my life in your place is just our way of saying, “please go away, you’re in the way,” which is typical of the Brave.
“…”
Though I couldn’t see much of her face except for her eyes, the atmosphere she radiated was clearly one of dissatisfaction. It seemed she was not keen on the deal.
But then again, she’s a woman.
Forming a blood pact with another woman when things with Alicia are still unsettled would be a bit sketchy, right?
Even Onyx, who gave his scales to Mariana out of consideration for my relationship with Alicia.
Even dragons are cautious in relationships, so obviously, I can’t just make a pact with some random girl from the underworld business.
I am a man of loyalty.
“Well, if you want to switch sides, go ahead and do it. If not, then commit wholeheartedly right here—”
And with that, I surrounded the area with a barrier, pushing forward with a murderous intent.
During the summer break, I learned to incorporate into my body the magical essence from the air, inspired by demons I had killed or stupid ones I had conversed with. This technique doesn’t require magical power except during deployment.
The barrier I deployed absorbs the magical essence, and voila, it’s an autonomous barrier that doesn’t rely on my magical power.
By reconfiguring it, it can even absorb an opponent’s magic!
Moreover, remember how the possessed Jelasis once dragged me into a mental world?
Inspired by that, I’ve managed to create a pseudo-mental world within this barrier.
That makes sense because the barrier is formed from my magical power; everything inside it is made of my magic.
“…!”
“This domain is so sophisticated that it makes me embarrassed to think I could ever catch up.”
It was possible to immobilize her completely.
Wednesday writhed as if paralyzed, and Edward, realizing she couldn’t move, let out a sigh of admiration.
Naturally, only a demon could use magic in this situation.
“―I’ll just kill you”
“Gah!”
By using magical sight to see through, and shaping my magical power into the form of a hand, I squeezed a critical spot, causing Wednesday to spit blood.
For a demon, it was like hitting the core, and for a human, it was akin to striking the heart.
Ripping off the head part of the black garment that covered everything but the eyes, a red-haired, freckled beauty was revealed.
Her eyes were deep red.
“You don’t have the luxury to choose. If you’re forming a blood pact, then bond with that baldy. If you get in the way, I’ll kill you. If you don’t, that’s fine by me.”
The two of you can play hide and seek.
“Cough, sorry, I ended up spitting blood because of you.”
“…”
Spend your lives spitting blood together, you two are perfect for each other.
“This is getting annoying, just finish it quickly.”
Edward then quickly performed his magic, which felt oddly similar to Jelasis’s, who had made a pact with a demon.
A blood pact is indeed a kind of magic that could be considered forbidden.
I tried to figure out if it could be undone, but it was too complexly intertwined for me to handle at the moment.
I wonder how he will overwrite this?
It’s definitely something created by the ancient sage, considering it’s passed down through the royal family.
It seems only those from a ducal family or higher, who are direct descendants of the ancient sage, can use it, like Aetherdam.
Is that how it’s supposed to work?
Given his remarkable talent among his peers, I guess he’ll somehow manage because of these circumstances.
“Very well, ugggggiiiii.”
Struggling against the barrier, Edward reached out to Wednesday and held his hand over her chest, declaring,
“By royal command, in the name of Edward gran Aetherdam, no, in the name of Aetherdam the Fifth, I will renew this ancient blood pact.”
His words were imbued with magic, making his head glow.
It wasn’t the hand.
Why did he extend his hand then?
Well, maybe it doesn’t matter anymore.
“Aren’t you going to offer blood or something?”
“Of course not, I just overwrote it with my name, so there shouldn’t be any problem.”
Edward spoke confidently, but Wednesday looked at him in disbelief.
“You’ve done something unimaginable.”
“Did it fail?”
I thought I’d just kill her as usual, but Wednesday shook her head and said otherwise.
“The current king is Aetherdam IV. You’ve overwritten yourself with a false identity. If the blood pact is broken, death awaits both parties.”
“So what does that mean?”
“It means if I don’t become the king, we both die. But really, it was either obey or die, wasn’t it the same?”
Edward casually dropped this shocking fact.
“But to overwrite the blood pact, this was the only way.”
“I couldn’t think of any other method either,” he mused, tilting his head.
“Well, if I become the king, that’s fine, and my father will probably live another 40 years. If I continue to live as the Shadow, there’s no guarantee of a long life. There are no downsides.”
It seems he insisted he was Aetherdam V and went ahead with the overwrite.
I wonder how that was even possible, but what’s done is done, it’s too late to change it now.
Well, if anything happens, it’s just the two of them who’ll die, so it really doesn’t matter.
Wednesday simply stated as she looked at Edward’s nonchalant demeanor.
“You’re insane.”
That’s what she said.
More like, I think he’s just foolish.
“Hey, Edward.”
“No, call me ‘Shadow,’ Barbarian.”
What a hassle.
“We haven’t set the details of the contract, but what’s going on?”
“Everything goes as I wish. If I say die, she dies.”
“…”
“Don’t glare at me like that, ‘Blood Wednesday.'”
“Please don’t abbreviate it weirdly.”
It’s actually her fault for using a weird name, but I won’t say that.
Ignoring Wednesday’s words, Edward continued.
“I admit your skill in taking my consciousness in an instant. As long as the ‘Empress’ and ‘Barbarian’ don’t find me bothersome, that’s all that matters. ‘Barbarian,’ you can release this barrier now, my life is secured.”
“Alright.”
I obediently removed the barrier.
Freed, Wednesday stood quietly in front of Edward without showing any resistance.
There was no malice in her demeanor, so it seemed unlikely she’d act hostile.
“Now, let’s have you spill everything you know about the enemy.”
“Understood, My Master…”
“My Master? No, call me ‘Shadow,’ I am now the ruler of the darkness of the royal capital. When you answer, say ‘Yes, My Shadow.'”
“…Yes, My, Shadow…”
She repeated it with a reluctant tone, but isn’t it pretty much the same as ‘My Master’?
Edward looked pleased, so I didn’t say anything.
“Hmm, Wednesday is hard to say, from today you’re Wendy… no, you’re ‘The First’ as my initial subordinate.”
“—Wendy is fine.”
Wednesday interrupted quickly.
I totally agree, from the bottom of my heart.
“If you like that name, let’s call you that from now on. Later, I need to make a special mask just for Wendy, huh? I only have this one concealing robe, but I’ll prepare something similar.”
Edward muttered to himself, and Wendy (formerly Wednesday or ‘The First’) gave me a look as if asking for help, but I decided to ignore it.
From now on, let this fool take care of her.
As long as she spills the information, she can live as she likes under Edward’s command.
Still, the fact that they possess magic that can unconditionally restrain others makes me think the higher-ups still have some incredible secrets hidden.
I need to think of countermeasures, or they might catch us off guard.
“Brave, I want to ask, which generation are you?”
“Um, the 13th, I guess?”
“Wendy, show respect to someone who outranks me. I can call him ‘Brave,’ but you should address him as ‘Lord Brave’—”
“—Just call me Brave.”
Brave is fine.
Somehow I feel embarrassed for the MC. He thinks he’s cooler than baldy but his edgy monologues are so uncool. The writing tries so hard to make him edgy that it becomes his whole personality. His uncoolness makes me blush in embarrassment. I’ll continue reading this for Alicia and Mariana instead.😳
As is with most of these novels, they kinda go off the rails trying to establish new threats. I honestly just want to get back to the fun times with Alicia and friends.
