Chapter 55: The Prince is Safe, But…
―GROOOOAR!
A loud boom filled the air when a fire, so fierce it seemed to burn up all the ants, burst out from the other side of the tiny entrance that Alicia had made too small for anything to pass through. The fire, funneled by the slim entrance, transformed into a torch-like flame.
“AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”
The Prince, who was attempting to cast Wind Blast at the entrance, received the full brunt of the flames on his upper body.
His screams ceased quickly as he fell on his back, engulfed in flames.
“…This magic.”
I recognized the magic entwined in the flames.
It was indeed from Jelasis Gran Ignite.
“Sir Ragna! Something terrible has happened to Prince Edward!”
“Cough…cough…”
Ignoring Mariana’s cries, I had been wondering when he would come, ever since he declared war. It seemed he chose the perfect moment.
“H-His skin just peeled off… ew… gross…”
“Cough…cough…”
Ignoring Mariana’s murmurs too.
If ants were agitated, he must’ve come to check if the Prince was truly dead.
What a hassle.
Facing that fiery demon under these circumstances is going to be tough.
“Alicia! What, what, what should we do!?”
“Cough…cough…”
Ignored by me, Mariana turned to Alicia for help.
“If he’s not dead, isn’t it okay to just leave him be?”
“What!? Is it really okay to just leave him?”
“Ragna doesn’t seem too concerned, does he?”
“It feels a bit cruel… I’ll treat him for now…”
Despite our rather indifferent attitude, Mariana, looking drained, began treating Edward by his side.
Even Mariana, who faints at the mere sight of nobles due to her trauma, seems to realize that fainting isn’t an option in this situation.
Lucky for you, Edward, she’s a kind soul.
Honestly, I couldn’t care less whether you were dead or alive.
A regular person would’ve been turned to ashes just like the ants.
If you can survive those flames, you’re probably hard to kill.
Good for you, Edward, with your fancy magic tools and quality clothes.
The pain you’re suffering is your own fault, but surviving is thanks to those around you who care.
“Ugh, the clothes are fused with the skin… oh, they’re not sticking… huh, these clothes are made of fire-resistant fibers, creating a simple barrier inside when burned? Most of it’s gone, and there are severe burns, but it’s amazing how these clothes’ features barely kept you alive?”
“Cough… cough, cough, cough…”
Edward, who could only manage to cough in response, was giving Mariana a desperate look as she analyzed the royal clothing with keen interest.
Seems like he’s holding up alright?
Despite the agony of his burns, Edward’s vitality truly marked him as a high-spec prince.
“It looks like the hair is beyond saving… but it’s better than dying, I guess.”
So, the prince’s hair is ruined. But at least it’s just the upper half; that’s a bit of a relief, thinking like a guy.
As long as “the prince” is safe, there won’t be any issues with succession.
Though, if this guy becomes king, it feels like the country might be in trouble.
“―Gyahahaha!”
Laughter echoed from the entrance.
Here it comes.
The fiery demon controlled by Jelasis Gran Ignite.
“Gyah!”
With a body still ablaze, only its eyes and mouth were visible, forming a sinister grin, seemingly delighted at causing Edward severe burns.
Stepping forward from the depths, I shouted towards Jelasis,
“How dare you! How dare you do this to the Prince!”
Attacking royalty is a grave crime, punishable by death.
Thoughts are free, but guilt is determined by the consequences of actions.
Mocking the prince while he’s injured, this guy…
“That’s rather hypocritical, isn’t it?”
Alicia looked at me with skepticism.
“But it does give us a just cause.”
“I suppose that’s true.”
In this situation, it looks like we’re protecting a prince who’s been targeted.
Mariana seems to be treating him, so things are moving in a good direction.
“More importantly, Alicia, are you okay with the fire?”
“Compared to that, it’s nothing more than a scratch…”
Alicia said, looking distantly towards Edward, who suffered severe burns.
“And I’ve said all I wanted to, so I don’t really care anymore.”
Then, turning to me, Alicia continued,
“What about you, Ragna? You seemed pretty worn out.”
“I’m fine. It was just the heat of the moment that got everyone worked up.”
“I can help too—”
“No need. Alicia, you’re not ready to take on that fiery demon yet.”
I made it clear before she could offer her help.
Thinking you can fight that demon just because you’ve got a bit better at magic without incantations is overconfidence.
If anything, Edward might stand a better chance.
“I see… Okay…”
“Don’t worry. Just keep practicing at your own pace.”
If there’s a will, anyone can become stronger.
So, there’s no need for those sad eyes.
No need for that frustrated look.
No need for that worried gaze.
“I haven’t shown it much until now, but watch closely this time—the way a real magician fights.”
The entrance, now returned to its original size from the heat and destruction, stood before us.
Towards the fiery demon standing in its depths, I moved forward, sword in hand.
“Gyahah, she’s, mine, Gyahah.”
It’s too dangerous to let Alicia near this guy.
If she got taken away, it’d be the end of the world for me.
I’ve probably got like 2000 reasons to hate this guy.
Everything I haven’t been able to do with Alicia, all of it, feels like a reason to resent him.
I don’t have much magic left.
But for some reason, I find myself a little excited by this situation.

The author’s a bit of a psychopath, but I guess that’s better than the milk toast alternative.
