Chapter 48: Onyx – The Dragon Reminisces
My name is Onyx, a proud member of the dragon species, at the top of the world’s ecosystem as an Onyx Dragon.
Now, I find myself in battle with a human.
Humans are fragile, yet they are remarkable beings who have managed to thrive by passing on their knowledge to future generations.
They are also foolish. Whether due to overpopulation or the burden of excessive knowledge, they often kill each other, sometimes drastically reducing their numbers.
But, there’s something interesting about them.
Whether it’s a result of their instability or the primal instinct for survival stimulated by the magic saturating this world, there have indeed been those among them who could stand toe-to-toe with dragons.
They are called heroes in human society.
The kid standing before me seems to have the makings of one.
“GUOOOOOOOO!”
With a roar, I flap my wings, amplifying my magical power.
The winds generated by the dense magic of dragons transform into a massive tornado.
Any ordinary human would be swept away by this force, but this kid is different.
He stares me down from the heart of the tornado, sword in hand, stepping forward.
There’s no fear in his eyes, only a sharp focus on my vital points as he goes on the offensive.
“―!”
The kid charges with strength, his sword aiming for my eyes.
I feel like he’s forcefully prying open a spot protected by my dense magical power.
Hmph, he’s cleverly using the barrier.
But dragons aren’t so easily defeated.
“GUOOOOOOOO!”
I flick the kid away with my casually swaying tail.
Covered in dragon scales, with limbs that can tear through steel, wings, tail, and fangs, we dragons are the epitome of perfection among living beings.
Hahahahaha!
I got carried away and hit him harder than intended.
The kid crashes into the rocks of a barren mountain, buried under the debris.
Is he dead?
Humans are indeed fragile.
But, he quickly gets back up and charges at me again.
No matter how many times I hit him with my claws, tail, or blow him away with my wings, he keeps standing back up and facing me.
I found a bit of enjoyment in this.
Ah, it reminds me of someone from the past.
“―Still coming, kid?
“Yeah, I can still go on.”
I felt a strong magical power bursting from his eyes as he nodded at my words.
The magic covering his whole body became even denser.
Although I’m not one to get sentimental, his form reminded me of the past.
There was someone like him in the past.
A human with the same eyes.
A human who stood against a dragon without backing down, fought for seven days, and ended up becoming friends with a dragon, of all things.
His name was Ragna Brave.
Coincidentally, it’s the same name as the kid standing before me now.
The reason for our meeting was somewhat similar.
He stood before me to protect his people, just as this kid does.
He fought on the verge of death, clinging on with the intent to defeat a dragon, showing a bizarre smile in the midst of battle.
“Onyx! Hahaha! Dragons are truly amazing!”
“How dare a human show interest in dragons, it’s nauseating.”
“That’s harsh!”
They’re not just similar; they’re practically the same.
The only difference is that the other guy was already at his peak of power, while this kid’s power doesn’t even come close to mine.
But, that’s a minor detail.
It’s strange how fate works.
Across hundreds of years, a human with the same name and eyes appears in a land named after him, facing a dragon.
Dragons don’t believe in fate.
That’s a concept humans came up with.
If I breathe fire, everything turns to ash.
Yet, the saying that history repeats itself seems true when observing humans.
It’s happening right now, after all.
So, I’ve decided to see what becomes of this kid.
Will he go mad, or become a hero?
Unfortunately, I can’t fulfill a promise I made to my sister, but I’ll still lend him a bit of my strength, albeit reluctantly.
If I’m too lenient, he’ll get cocky and keep calling me out.
“Onyx! Are you thinking about something else?”
“Hmph, your attacks are so weak I was getting bored.”
“That’s harsh! Hey, can you go all out just this once at the end?”
“Don’t ask so casually. I am a dragon, above even your king.”
“But we’re friends, right?”
“I will end you. Witness the true extent of my power and comprehend the folly of your words.”
Only he could be called a friend.
This kid is close but not the same.
Let him spout nonsense once he can actually cut through my tough dragon scales and reach the flesh with his blade.
I soared into the sky and unleashed scorching flames down on the kid below.
“Ugh.”
Hmph, I’ve worn down that proud barrier of his.
That barrier is no longer indestructible, almost sacred and forbidden.
At this point, the kid can barely withstand it; he might get a bit burned all over.
He’s still weak, truly weaker compared to him.
It means he can still turn back.
―To call a dragon a friend, a human’s capacity is simply not enough.
―Only those who are more than human, not wearing human skin, can.
―He suffered.
―My sister grieved.
―Kid, will you repeat the same?
