Chapter 106: The History of Kurogane – Bonds?
“What the heck.”
Ancient Hero, Sage, and Saint—figures that could be called the three greats of the old times.
The Hero was my ancestor, Ragna Brave.
The Sage was the first king, Edward gran Aetherdam.
Both of them looked exactly like me and Edward in the present.
However, the one who appeared was the Ancient Saint.
A lady from the Ocean barony, Patricia von Ocean.
“This one is different from the present.”
I started to get confused.
“I thought for sure the Saint was Mariana Ocean.”
Given the flow, it should be a woman who looks just like Mariana.
But… Patricia, it was you.
I wouldn’t say it’s impossible, but the game world in my mind feels like an illusion.
Could it be that the real saint is actually Patricia?
No, it can’t be.
I don’t understand why Headmaster Vorsea treats Mariana specially.
“You’re not mistaken.”
Sebas said, as if to support me, who was a bit shocked, thinking I knew this world.
“She too can be considered a reincarnation with the saint’s essence.”
“Then you’re saying Patricia is a saint too?”
“Indeed.”
That annoying woman, a saint? In that case, Alicia is more of a saint!”
“Now, now, please calm down, young master.”
When Sebas snapped his fingers, the images began to flow again.
Information started to pour into my mind, using the pitch-black darkness of the abyss around us as a 360-degree screen.
By the way, even as we were talking about this and that, we were still falling headlong.
We had been falling for so long that we ended up sitting on chairs Sebas had prepared, snacking on cookies and drinking coffee from a table falling at the same speed, while watching the memories.
This scene felt like something out of a comedy skit.
“Surprisingly, things don’t spill much when you’re falling upside down.”
“As expected of you, young master. You adapt quickly.”
“It still doesn’t taste like anything, but at least the atmosphere is better.”
Tea and coffee are usually enjoyed for their atmosphere anyway.
The spice of such indulgences is largely determined by one’s mood that day.
“At this stage, I imagine you have many questions, but you’ll understand if you keep watching.”
“Alright.”
I turned my attention to the incoming videos, using the bland tea snacks to distract my restless mouth.
The scene showed the ancient Edward persistently asking Patricia out on a date.
“Lady Patricia! Shall we go on a date? Look, I have prepared a necklace that would suit you well!”
“I-I’ll just take the necklace.”
The scene kept changing rapidly.
It was like a typical “intense appeal from a flagged character” in an otome game.
“Lady Patricia! A date! Look, I had a custom ring made this time. It suits your holy attribute well.”
“I’ll take the ring.”
A necklace, a ring…
“Lady Patricia! This time I’ve had a bracelet specially made. How about it? Its shine even outshines the light attribute. So, a date?”
“Thank you. But I have work now.”
A bracelet, earrings—it seemed he approached her every day.
Edward was showering Patricia with various gifts.
He never got tired of it, acting as if this was the happiest moment for him.
What felt a bit different from the present was the look in his eyes.
It wasn’t the look modern Edward gave Patricia, but more of a sparkling admiration, similar to how he looked at me nowadays.
Still, I had a sense of déjà vu about the items being given. They all seemed to be the holy relics enshrined in the game.
So that’s how those holy relics were made.
Thinking about it that way, it made even less sense why they were deep in dungeons, but that’s not important right now.
“How could he keep approaching with so much enthusiasm?”
Ragna watched Edward, who looked satisfied after handing over the presents and leaving, and spoke with a hint of exasperation.
“And you, how can you keep giving such vague responses and still wear them?”
“It would be rude not to wear what I received, right?”
Ragna commented while looking at Patricia’s ever-growing collection of accessories.
“You’ve got quite the personality.”
Ragna thought that completely rejecting him might be a kind of kindness, but Patricia’s conscientiousness in wearing the gifts only encouraged more.
Seeing this, Ragna let out a big sigh.
“Well, I don’t dislike him, so it’s fine to wear them.”
Patricia chuckled while looking in the direction Edward had gone.
“The country is in chaos, and there are monsters everywhere. Despite that, I don’t dislike seeing him struggling, unable to sit still.”
“I see.”
“It makes me feel like this country isn’t done for yet.”
“True.”
“Though we still don’t know the root cause of why the monsters suddenly appeared, I believe he will surely lead the people in a good direction.”
Ragna did not deny the hopeful look in her eyes.
According to Sebas’ explanation, in the historical records, this Edward was the one who created the barrier.
Using the saint.
The heroes of the past, unaware of what the future held, seemed to dream of a brighter future.
“Well then, Ragna, shall we go too?”
“Yeah, yeah.”
“There are many people injured by the monsters waiting for us. Neither you nor I are good at politics, right? So, let’s use our legs to help as many people as we can.”
Even though her face looked like Patricia’s, her words were sensible.
Trying to keep my mind from getting confused, I focused on their conversation.
“You’re not so bad at it, are you? If you wanted to, you could handle the nobles quite well, right?”
I nodded at the past Ragna’s words. The reincarnated Patricia was a remarkable person who could handle matters against the country.
“I can’t.”
With her hands clasped behind her head, Ragna’s words were met with a short response from Patricia.
Looking up at the clear sky, unshielded and open, a symbol of limitless freedom, she spoke.
“I don’t have the strength to choose when it comes down to picking one or the other. So, as long as I can move my legs and use my magic, I have to fulfill my mission.”
“That’s a noble sentiment.”
“If you call it noble, it’s really quite selfish. It’s just self-preservation because I can’t choose, so I don’t.”
The trolley problem… a question with no real answer.
Seeing Patricia showing a bit of hesitation, Ragna spoke to her.
“Isn’t it pointless to worry? If we save everyone, that’s all that matters.”
“Of course, that’s my intention. But…”
Patricia started to say and then shook her head, making a determined expression.
“Yeah… I’ll find out the cause of this miasma filling the country and fix it. That’s my mission.”
“That’s the quickest way.”
“Of course, it’s not just Edward. Ragna, I trust and expect a lot from you too, you immortal adventurer.”
“I’m not really immortal. When it’s time to die, I’ll die.”
“As long as I’m here, you’re immortal. I might not have the skills to fend off sparks, but I have the magic to help. So will you continue to lend me your strength?”
“Consider it done. It’s a promise.”
Walking on the road leading out of town, they had this conversation.
Suddenly, Patricia turned to Ragna and smiled.
“But, in a way, you’re just as stubborn as I am, aren’t you? Persistent, or whatever you call it. We’re quite alike, aren’t we?”
“Don’t lump us together! It makes my skin crawl!”
At that point, the scene cut off.
“Well, that was a glimpse of the three heroes who will save the country.”
“Yeah.”
This could very well be one of the scenarios in an otome game, such is the relationship among these three.
Initially, Edward and Ragna were like cats and dogs, but eventually, they came to respect each other. It’s kind of annoying, though, for me, the Ragna living in the present.
But I’m somewhat relieved that neither Patricia nor I have raised any flags with each other.
“Still, I don’t think we can just relax.”
How did they end up using the saint as a barrier with this kind of relationship?
Was it a result of love turning into hatred?
How could my ancestor, Ragna Brave, who was always by the saint’s side, let this happen?
“Well, you’ll understand if you keep watching.”
“Though I already know about the sage’s fall to darkness…”
Sebas casually mentioned it, but I knew that Edward would eventually fall into darkness. If these are past memories embedded in our blood, then it’s history repeating itself.
“Aren’t you curious about what caused his fall to darkness?”
“Whatever it is, it’s all your fault—everything, including the miasma.”
“Oh, indeed, indeed, it was.”
He laughed softly, but even with that light-hearted attitude, the consequences of his actions wouldn’t disappear.
However, tracing it back, it was due to the atrocities committed by a king even before their time. The demon merely granted human desires as a demon would, so there was no way to hold it accountable.
“Well, what’s done is done.”
This is a story from the past, and no matter what happens or what anyone thinks, the facts can’t be changed.
I don’t particularly care, but he says there’s a chance for my redemption after my pathetic death. So, I’ll just watch and see.
With that thought, I refocused on the video.
“Damn it…”
It was raining.
In the rain, standing alone, was the hero Ragna.
“This is escalating way too fast.”
