- Chapter 45: The Protagonist And the Background Maid. The Villain And The Maid. Clear as Day
“I’ve returned.”
“We’re back~”
Hibari and Yuito had come back. The two entered the living room.
Yuito had two bags of takeout sushi in his hands, while Hibari was holding what looked like bags from the supermarket.
“Thank you, Hibari-san! Let’s talk again sometime!”
“I enjoyed our conversation as well.”
They seemed to be getting along quite well. Hibari still maintained her usual expressionless face though.
Poke poke.
“Hm? Yes…?”
When I turned around after feeling someone poking my back, I saw Riina narrowing her eyes with a somewhat displeased look. Her gaze was directed at Yuito and Hibari.
“…Why did they get so close?”
“No idea.”
Unlike Riina, I didn’t mind if Yuito and Hibari became friends. But that interaction felt more like… girls chatting excitedly with each other.
“…Hmm.”
“If you’re that concerned, why don’t you go ask them?”
When I said that, Riina’s eyes darted around, and she said, “I just… can’t interrupt when Yui-kun is having fun.”
“Yes, yes. That’s the kind of person you are, Riina-san.”
Yuito’s smiles were her top priority, after all.
“Then you’ll just have to quietly watch over them.”
“…Hmm.”
“Hey, don’t make such a dissatisfied face. Riina-san, you have a surprisingly difficult personality…”
“I’m not difficult at all~”
Riina stuck out her tongue at me. That part of her that refused to admit things was what made her difficult… but I’d better not say that or things would get even more complicated.
“What are you two talking about?”
“Ah, big sis. Look at that.”
Mahiro had arrived as well.
“She’s upset that Yuito and my maid are getting along.”
“I didn’t say that much!”
“From my perspective, it’s just as strange that Kasajima-kun and Riina have become close.”
When Mahiro smiled, Riina made a complicated expression.
“We’re not particularly close.”
“You’ve been interacting with Kasajima-kun quite a bit since the school trip.”
“That’s only because he’s Yui-kun’s friend…”
“Hmm~”
“Big sis, that smug feeling you’re giving off is annoying.”
“Riina is just not being honest. You should just admit you’re interested.”
“Sis…!”
The beautiful sisters were arguing about something. Why was I, the villain, surrounded by beautiful sisters? Yuito, hurry up and get back to your rightful position.
I stood up and went over to Yuito and Hibari.
“Hey, welcome back. Yuito, I’ll take it from here, hand over the sushi. Thanks for accompanying Hibari.”
“Yeah! Then I’ll leave it to you.”
I took the bag containing the sushi from Yuito. By “take it from here,” I just meant taking them out of the bag and removing the lids.
“What did you buy, Hibari?”
“I thought I’d prepare some dishes.”
With four men here, sushi alone might be slightly insufficient.
“Yuji-sama, could you help me?”
“Oh, sure. No problem.”
I answered while glancing at Yuito. Yuito was… talking with the beautiful sisters. This time he didn’t immediately offer to help.
I rolled up my long sleeves and stood in the kitchen with Hibari.
“What are we making?”
“Side dishes and salad to go with the sushi. Yuji-sama will gain weight if you only eat carbohydrates.”
“Ugh… yes…”
I wish I had a body type that wouldn’t gain weight even if I ate only carbs…
“Yuji-sama, what vegetables do you dislike?”
“Eggplant and bitter gourd.”
I just couldn’t come to like those two. The texture of eggplant’s flesh and that unpleasant drying sensation in the mouth when it was not properly prepared was somewhat traumatic. As for bitter gourd, I couldn’t get used to its unique bitterness. Just being near it was traumatic.
“Then, let’s make a salad using those.”
“Those are clearly not salad ingredients. Besides, I’d cry if they appeared on the table.”
“I’m joking. I bought ingredients to make salmon miso soup and a Japanese-style tofu and mizuna salad.”
“That sounds perfect.”
Warm miso soup infused with the richness of salmon would go well with the cold sushi. The Japanese-style tofu and mizuna salad would be easy to eat as a palate cleanser.
We immediately started cooking. I was in charge of the salad. Well, it would be complete just by cutting and mixing.
As we both worked smoothly, suddenly—
“You two look like a married couple, you know~”
“Huh?”
Tajima, who had his chin resting on the table while watching us, suddenly blurted out.
“Showing off your practiced teamwork. There’s no room for me to step in… grrrr…”
“You still haven’t given up?”
“Ignore him, Kasajima. This guy’s an idiot.”
“Yeah, I know.”
“Who are you calling an idiot?! What part of that conversation was idiotic?!”
Leaving the noisy Tajima to Satoshima, I was about to resume cooking when I felt another gaze. Looking ahead, I met Yuito’s eyes.
“What is it, Yuito?”
“Nothing. Just thinking it’s nice watching the two of you.”
“Oh, okay?”
“Thank you very much.”
“You’re welcome. Hehe.”
“Wait, that was the moment to say thank you?!”
It was not that I was insensitive, right? It was just that they seemed to understand each other. Yuito and Hibari… What had happened in just about 40 minutes?
The main dish of sushi, along with salmon miso soup and Japanese-style tofu and mizuna salad, made for an impressive lunch spread. When spending a day studying for tests, the most enjoyable part was eating lunch together. By the way, I’d invited Hibari to join us, but she’d declined.
For the afternoon session of our study group, we studied longer than in the morning. Towards the end, concentration began to wane as mechanical pencils stopped moving, but…
“Alright. Today’s study session ends here. Good job everyone. Don’t get complacent just because you studied today. Make sure to thoroughly practice and review during the test preparation period.”
Mahiro concluded the session with those words. And thus, the study session successfully ended.
After seeing everyone off at the entrance of the apartment building, I returned to the room. Hibari was washing glasses.
“Whew, that was quite tiring. Feels like I really used my brain.”
“Good work. It was a proper study session, wasn’t it?”
“I actually thought it wouldn’t be productive.”
I had expected the beautiful sisters to fight over Yuito, making the study session unproductive, but all three of them worked silently. That’s what you call knowing when to be serious.
“By the way, you seemed to have gotten close with Yuito. Did you talk a lot and come to appreciate his good qualities?”
“We didn’t talk that much this time.”
“Hmm.”
“But it was harder to talk to him since he’s not Yuji-sama.”
“Because he’s not me?”
“Yes.”
Did that mean she found it easier to talk to me? If so, that made me happy.
“I want you to study properly, but do you remember the promise we made before the school trip?”
“Promise… Ah.”
“Next time, let’s go somewhere even more fun than the amusement park or shopping mall.”
Of course I remembered. It was because Hibari was being honest when she’d made that request.
“Leave it to me. Let’s create more fun memories together.”
“Yes.”
Hibari’s slight smile was still something only I’d seen. I wondered why I felt so proud about that.
