- Chapter 93: My partner was discovered by the Second Princess
“Prince Harold, thank you for your hard work.”
When I exited the audience chamber after my meeting with King Salomon, Monica was there waiting for me.
“Phew… As a result of our discussion, Princess Lisette will be coming with us to the Kingdom of Dehaubarz.”
“I see…”
“Well, it’s under the pretext of studying abroad at the Royal Academy. Until then, she’ll be getting used to our country.”
Letting out a deep breath, I explained the details of the meeting to Monica. After all, we would now be taking Lisette in as a state guest, which meant my personal maid might be troubled by the arrangement.
“So, how did things go on your end?”
“Yes. Just as you predicted, Prince Harold, Prince Jean has met with the Knight Commander.”
“I knew it…”
Since this morning, I’d had Monica acting separately to track Jean’s movements, because after last night’s incident I was certain his associates would make contact.
And sure enough, it turned out that the suspicious Knight Commander was indeed connected to him. That confirmation alone made me quite satisfied.
“In that case, it’s highly likely Jean entrusted future plans to the Knight Commander. They’ll probably start moving toward a coup.”
Jean would want to avoid drawing any more suspicion, so even if we kept watching him, no one else would approach him directly. It would be better to keep an eye on the Knight Commander insisted. That way, we could track the movement of the plot itself.
“I keep giving you troublesome assignments, Monica, and I feel bad…!?”
“Please don’t say such things. Besides, I’ll expect my pay to reflect all this extra effort.”
With that, Monica gently pressed a finger against my lips. Her expression barely changed, but she gave a small, elegant smile.
Hmm… honestly, I still thought she was way cuter than any of EnHaza’s heroines, yet she wasn’t even a mob character. This game really was full of bugs.
“Well then, I’ll excuse myself for now.”
“Right. I’m counting on you.”
Monica bowed gracefully, then disappeared from sight without a sound.
“Now then… I should get back to the garden. The girls are probably worried.”
Muttering to myself, I started walking toward the garden where Sandra and Lisette were waiting.
On the way there…
“Ah…”
I ran right into Lisette’s younger sister, the Second Princess, Elyne.
If I remembered correctly, in EnHaza she was portrayed as the poor younger sister bullied by the villainess Lisette. In other words, not a heroine, just a background character.
Still, after hearing King Salomon’s story earlier, I could see they shared some resemblance, but not much. It must be because they had different mothers.
“Well, well, Princess Elyne. Good afternoon.”
“Eep…!”
Huh…? I’d only greeted her lightly, but she let out a little squeak of fright. She was clearly terrified of me. Sure, I might have the face of a petty villain, but still, that stung a bit.
“A-ahaha… e-excuse me!”
If I stayed any longer, it’d probably look like I was bullying her instead of Lisette. And since I already had the public reputation of being the “talentless wicked prince”, that rumor had surely spread even here in the Capetien Kingdom.
So, before any misunderstanding could happen, I quickly slipped away, but…
“…”
Wait… why was she following me?
Her behavior was so inexplicable that I had no idea what to do. If I called out to her, she’d probably get scared again. But if I ignored her, she’d just keep tailing me anyway.
I really wanted to know what her goal was, but in this situation, I was at a loss.
And just as I was thinking that, trouble kept piling up.
“Ah! Haru!”
“Whaaaaaaa!?”
W-why on earth was Cass here!? And worse, she was talking in front of Elyne!
Panicking, I sprinted forward, grabbed Cass, and immediately clamped a hand over her mouth.
“Mmph!?”
“You idiot! This isn’t the Dehaubarz palace! Why are you even here!?”
Yeah, I was really panicking at that moment. I was so focused on silencing Cass that I blurted out something I definitely shouldn’t have said.
And because of that…
“C-can that cat talk?”
…Elyne ran right up to us, eyes sparkling with excitement as she asked.
