The Tale of the Redeeming Villain - Chapter 45- Caught?
Blake’s mana was tracked. There was a scout in the team with exceptional tracking skill, as the mana which Blake emitted from his spell was almost non-existent.
Currently, they were heading toward the forest to lose the soldiers who were pursuing them. However, because Blake’s mana was still getting tracked it was nearly impossible to completely get rid of them.
If these people caught them, then they would surely bring the duo to the Emperor. And that was not unacceptable.
Blake was aware of Noelle’s wicked personality. He would imprison Catherine as a hostage to ensure his safety during the great war.
Hearing the loud thumps of horses, closing in their direction Blake clicked his tongue. Telling Catherine to take another path would be futile since they must have other soldiers surround them already. And in this vast jungle, it wouldn’t be surprising for them to get separated.
And stopping to fight them can be dangerous since he was unaware of what kind of fighter they have on their side.
*Sling*
Suddenly, Blake sensed something advancing toward his head, urging him to tilt his head just at the right moment to evade the incoming dart.
Not only that but several more darts were shot in their direction, aiming for any spot that it could hit and render them unconscious.
“Catherine!” Blake pulled her towards him as one of the darts was about to hit her shoulder.
His ring changed its shape and a shield was formed around the two. The black material which Blake used as a scythe against the dragon was now serving as a shield to protect them.
For further protection, Catherine chanted a barrier around them, just in case.
The darts continued to be shot in their direction, but none of them penetrated through the thick wall of gluttony.
It continued for several more minutes before finally, silence descended upon the forest.
“Don’t remove your barrier,” Blake told her before he slowly removed the black curtain.
“Ah!” Catherine gasped upon seeing tens of soldiers surrounding them completely.
Blake frowned seeing these many soldiers surrounding them. It was almost like they knew they could find them here.
The one who looked like the battalion captain jumped off the horse and approached the duo.
Catherine erected another layer of barrier, which not only blocks physical but also magical attacks.
However, from the soldier’s demeanour, it didn’t seem he intended to attack them.
The man paused a few meters before the first barrier and introduced himself, “I am Cobalt, the knight commander of this unit and someone who wants to politely escort you to the capital.”
“Are you sure you want to ‘escort’ us not drag us to your master?” Blake asked; his voice sounded condensed enough to make the tracker gulp.
The flowing dark matter in his hand gave a very ominous vibe, urging Cobalt to raise his brows.
‘So it’s true. This man is one of them.’ Cobalt was informed that the Saintess had been corrupted by an evil-worshipper and it was his duty to bring them back so they could heal the Saintess.
Cobalt heaved a sigh and told them, “See, there is no point in arguing over the choice of my words. All I want you two to surrender and come with us.”
“I am curious about the next part that comes after otherwise,” Blake provoked; his creation now humming violently to devour some humans and shed some blood.
Cobalt’s next words would decide many things. Whether Blake and Catherine leave after a massacre or without one. They are leaving this place, that was for sure.
However, neither Cobalt said anything after that, and what followed was not something that could have allowed them to leave just like that.
Cobalt gestured to one of the soldiers before three children were pushed to appear before the duo.
Catherine’s eyes widened as she screamed, “No!!”
The three children were among several of the orphans with whom she used to live back in her hometown in a small house.
“S-sister…”
“Bwaaaaahhhhh!”
Two of them started to cry, and the oldest one called out in a weak tone, on the verge of sobbing.
Seeing them here nearly made her drop her spell and run towards them.
From their condition, it was evident that they were beaten and wounded. Catherine’s eyes turned moist seeing those innocent lives under the shade of danger because of her.
Blake gritted his teeth and was about to release the wrath of Gluttony on every single soldier around him when suddenly Cobalt warned,
“Uh-uh. Think before you make any decision, Mister Blake. There is a soldier amongst the crowd who has a very strange skill called Soul Sync. It attaches to one’s life with the skill users, so if you kill the skill user the children would die as well.”
Blake snarled, “There are no such skills in existence.”
Cobalt shrugged, “I mean, you can try your luck and endanger the life of those children whom the Saintess nurtured like her own siblings.”
Blake hesitated and glanced at Catherine, who was already on her knees and crying while covering her mouth.
He was very well aware of how much she adored those children, and the fact they were captured by the soldiers meant the church was involved in this.
Cobalt stepped forward and provoked, “Go on and show that you care about no human life and just desire your own happiness. Come on, show us what kind of demon you are.”
It has been years since Blake felt angered because of someone like he was feeling right now.
Not only Cobalt chose the method of a sissy but he was also now provoking him while hiding behind some children. What a shame on knighthood.
However, there was nothing Blake could do. If Cobalt was right and Blake ends up killing every soldiers there was a chance that those innocent lives also get involved in the onslaught.
And Blake cannot live with the guilt of murdering his beloved’s family.
Raising his hand, he stepped back and knelt on the ground; allowing a smirk to stretch Cobalt’s lips.
“Good decision~”
