- Chapter 39 : The Aftermath of a Bloody Battle!
‘I won’t bury them.’ Having come this far, Alba decided to leave the remains of the cult members who kidnapped Sheria and planned to retreat back home, throwing the responsibility onto the protagonist, Yuris.
Defeating the cult members who had abducted and nearly killed the Saintess was undoubtedly a great achievement. It should serve as compensation for all the trouble they caused.
With that in mind, Alba left their corpses behind and slowly made his way back to the ruins.
The moment he set foot inside, he was unexpectedly attacked by a flying ‘rocket’ at his abdomen.
“Alba-kun!”
“Huh—?!”
Alba had not expected to be attacked right after the conclusion of the curtain call, and he fell backward without a chance to defend himself.
He was about to complain, thinking, ‘Hey, what about some recognition for the hero here?’ but those words were halted just in time.
“Alba, Alba…! I’m so glad you’re okay!”
Sheria cried as if confirming her own warmth by pressing her face against Alba’s chest and snuggling closer to him.
Although he had come to her rescue, she was anxious all this time. Even if she was called a saintess, there was no way a girl who is young and is currently in her teens wouldn’t be frightened when her life was in danger.
The tears streaming down her face were likely the result of a mixture of relief.
So, Alba gently smiled and affectionately patted Sheria’s head.
“There there, is this an extra-large sale for being spoiled?”
Even in response to teasing words, Sheria continued to sob.
Alba, somewhat disappointed that his joke had been ignored, smiled wryly.
“If you keep crying, what will you do if we end up in a situation where I have to make you cry, especially in front of the Pope and your sisters?”
“B-but…!”
“I’m safe, and you’re safe. Isn’t that enough?”
As long as he could end things with a smile, the details didn’t matter. Now that the current situation of being able to smile was secured, there was no need for anxiety or worry anymore.
To reassure her, Alba continued to pat Sheria’s head while feeling her warmth.
Then, a young boy whose age was the same as that of Alba appeared, treading on rubble.
“Impressive, defeating that woman, she was a really tough opponent.”
Yuris spoke, and there were no traces of the injuries he had seen back then on his body. Most likely, Sheria had healed him properly through her blessings.
Alba felt relieved at that thought and bowed his head while still lying down.
“Thank you.”
“Huh?”
“If it weren’t for you, Sheria and Mina’s sister would have been badly injured and in the worst case scenario they might have got killed.”
Alba suddenly turned his gaze to the nearby wall.
There sat a girl, still unconscious but not chained and clearly breathing calmly.
“Although I couldn’t do anything, it’s thanks to you they are alive.”
Misjudging that he had done nothing would be a big mistake. Without a doubt, Yuris had saved this situation. It was a fact that Sheria and Mina’s sister were safe now.
Receiving Alba’s grateful look, Yuris briefly looked bewildered before quickly breaking into a small smile.
“I just returned the favor for what you did for Alice.”
‘So, he probably had a sense of justice as well.’ Alba smiled wryly at the sight of Yuris, who didn’t try to act cool unnecessarily.
At that moment…
“Haah… Haah…”
At the entrance of the ruins, a girl appeared, leaning against the wall with red and black wings and sharp claws.
However, her red eyes were fixed on the girl sitting against the wall, as if struggling to accept the reality in front of her.
Alba looked at the girl and urged Sheria to step away. Unwillingly as she lost the familiar warmth, she moved away from him, and Alba stood up and approached Mina.
“Mina.”
“Al-Alba-kun…”
Mina’s red eyes were fixed on Alba. She seemed to want to say something but didn’t know what to say. Mina’s mouth opened and closed repeatedly as no words formed.
In response, Alba simply smiled.
“I told you, didn’t I?”
‘What were those words meant for?’ Despite the lack of a subject, the words that had lingered in Mina’s mind began to surface.
“I’ll save everyone and no one will die who is precious to me.”
Those words from that time had been true. Despite denying it as a lie, something impossible, he had proven it. Sheria wiped her tears, Yuris smiled, placing a hand on his hip, and most importantly, the sight of Mina’s sister, Kanna, breathing safely and soundly.
Mina felt compelled to say something, considering her own guilt. She opened her mouth and tried saying…
“Uh, I…!”
However, Alba interrupted her with those words.
“You don’t have to say anything to me. Just go and see your little sister.”
“Huh…?”
Alba gestured to make way for her. There was no sign of reproach in his eyes. He directed a gentle gaze towards Mina.
“You should have a heartwarming reunion with your sister as soon as possible, right?”
Mina hesitated for a moment. After all she had done, was it really okay? Her guilt didn’t allow her to accept it easily. Still, worry for her beloved family moved Mina’s feet without her consent.
“…Kanna.”
Her steps gradually quickened.
“Kanna!”
Running, Mina reached the little girl’s side. She picked her up and put her ear to Kanna’s mouth to confirm that she was breathing or not.
Then, when she realized Kanna was alive, tears streamed down her face.
At that moment, whether it was good timing or bad timing, Kanna’s eyelids slowly opened.
“Onee-chan…”
Kanna’s hand touched Mina’s cheek.
Tears flowed, wetting the girl’s hand, but Kanna simply moved her lips slightly.
“What happened to your eyes? No, it’s not good. You shouldn’t look like this anymore…”
Mina’s tears increased even more. Yet, there was a gentle and warm smile on Mina’s face.
“I’m sorry. Your onee-chan couldn’t keep her promise.”
But…
“It’s all over now.”
Mina embraced her sister, Kanna.
“It’s over!”
Sobs echoed through the ruins. However, those who watched could tell that these were not tears born of sorrow, but of something else, something different.
Nearby, Yuris had a pleased smile on his face, as if he were happy as if it were his own accomplishment.
On the other hand, Sheria wiped her tears and came to Alba, grabbing his sleeve, and said just some words, despite her teary voice.
“It’s good, isn’t it.”
What was good? It was obvious without needing to be said.
Alba shifted his gaze away from Sheria’s face, looking at Mina, who was tightly hugging her sister with a tearful smile.
“Indeed.”
And so, this event, which had started with the kidnapping of the saintess, came to an end. Twists and turns had deviated from the original story, but in the end, they all wore smiles without missing a beat.
The protagonist, the heroine, the supporting characters, and even the villains.
