- Chapter 19 : The Hero and The Villain!
The Protagonist of Clearana Fantasy — Yuris.
From the moment the game begins, Yuris is the character the ‘player’ controls, and he is the one involved in all the events.
While the principles and types of actions they take to be controlled by the player are not often emphasized, according to the setting, Yuris is characterized by an overflowing sense of justice and a kind nature that strongly dislikes seeing others in sorrow.
Furthermore, being of commoner birth… even without anyone to guide them, Yuris mastered swordsmanship through self-taught methods, possessed an exceptional combat sense, and had the potential to become one of the strongest in this world regardless of the route taken after the game’s conclusion, though his talent and strength was slightly inferior to Alba.
As a result, more than half of Alba’s demise as the antagonist was caused by Yuris.
With a sword in hand to save the heroine, even when Yuris stood as the final boss, he killed Alba while bearing a heavy heart.
In other words, Yuris is more intertwined with Alba’s death flags than even the heroines who are the capture targets and is currently the character that Alba must avoid interacting with the most.
However…
‘…This situation is the worst.’
Alba let out a deep sigh.
He felt intense regret that he stopped here.
His speed when he cloaked himself with ‘lightning’ was not something visible to the eyes of others. If he hadn’t stopped out of curiosity, he wouldn’t have been detected by his opponent.
But by stopping, he was completely seen by the boy right in front of him — Yuris.
Should he turn around and run away from here? Just as he was considering that thought, Alba delivered a round-house spinning kick behind his back. The result was a red-black liquid and pieces of flesh scattering around in the vicinity.
“Why are you here?”
Without shifting his gaze, Yuris inquired about Alba.
While doing so, Yuris swung his sword without looking and effortlessly cut through a beast attempting to cross their path.
It seemed their stats were as the story indicated; solitary beasts weren’t a match for them.
“Well, that’s my line, but aren’t students supposed to evacuate?”
“I suppose I should be evacuating too, but… Millie, my childhood friend, got separated from the group for a moment and we ended up in this situation. I still haven’t found her, so I’m still searching for her.”
As Yuris spoke, he continued to cut down the beasts that were attacking them.
Hearing this, Alba began to ponder.
‘So, the current events are related to the childhood friend route…?’
The childhood friend of the protagonist is also a capture target in this game.
In the initial event, the protagonist saves the childhood girl who becomes isolated from the group due to a beast attack, hence increasing his favorability in her eyes.
From what Yuris was saying, it appeared the protagonist wasn’t planning to join up with Sheria, Ireina, or the sage’s disciple, but was heading toward his childhood friend.
In other words…
‘Currently, if I avoid involvement with the childhood friend, I can avoid interfering with that route. Then, at least one of the death flags won’t be triggered.’
At present, Alba’s goal is to eradicate the magic beasts to prevent harm from befalling Sheria, Ireina and the other students.
As long as he keeps that in mind, it’s unlikely he will delve any deeper in the plot.
‘However, there’s one concern… It feels like things are slightly deviating from the story I know.’
[T/N : Bruh, that was bound to happen. He should have already realized this thing by now]
This might be due to the fact that he, as the original villainous Alba, is making different moves.
While he understands this to some extent, considering the somewhat ambiguous direction things are taking, it’s probably best not to hold onto unwavering certainty.
“So, why are you here?”
“Hmm? Oh, I’m just going around defeating the beasts to keep them from reaching Sheria and Ireina. I guess our reasons aren’t that different.”
“…I see.”
Alba struck down a beast leaping at him.
Yuris, too, swung his sword sideways to cut down a beast that had appeared in front of him.
However, their numbers were vast. Despite defeating them like this, the number of beasts coming at them didn’t seem to decrease.
“If you’re looking for your childhood friend, try heading west from here.”
“Huh?”
“I might be imagining things, but… I feel like I saw a girl running over there earlier.”
Of course, it was a lie.
He was merely stating a location based on knowledge he had barely remembered from playing the game in his previous life.
But Yuris, who knew nothing of this, had his eyes shining and he gripped his sword tightly.
“Really?!”
“Uh, yeah… She might have moved by now, or it could be my imagination.”
“Well, that’s still plenty of information! Thank you!”
Although his eyes made him momentarily flinch, for now, he didn’t sense any signs of a looming disaster.
He was likely just worried about his childhood friend… Being so grateful for providing information in the current situation brought on a slight sense of guilt and remorse.
‘I might be faster if I go there, and it’s probably how the story is supposed to go originally… But, I’ll be able to help much faster and considering the danger, it’s better if I am the one who goes to save her. But still…’
A conflict arose within Alba.
The feeling of not wanting to be involved any further, and the genuine desire to help the girl whose life is in danger.
However…
“I’ll never forget this favor! Thank you so much, Alba-kun!”
Before Alba could come to a conclusion, Yuris ran off from the scene.
Watching his receding figure, unable to reach him even if he wanted to say something, Alba let out a deep sigh once again.
“Ugh… What am I doing? When it was Sheria, I was ready to help without a second thought.”
If this weren’t the main stage, he probably wouldn’t have overthought things.
But here, on the main stage, every action could potentially lead to his death.
His thoughts dulled, and the sense of justice that shouldn’t be in a villain’s character wavered, perhaps understandably so.
“Well then, I’d at least prefer it if I didn’t feel indebted and didn’t get involved because of this opportunity… damn it!”
Alba moved closer to the approaching magical beasts from all directions and crushed their heads in an instant.
A pale blue light adorned his blood-stained fists, gathering further around his body.
“Well, if I defeat all these mana beasts, in the end, everyone will be saved.”
Alba clenched his fists in determination.
Even though they were his bare hands, they held a powerful weapon for him.
“Now, come on, you damn pests. I won’t let you get anywhere near Sheria and Ireina.”
And thus, at a speed imperceptible to the eye, Alba began snuffing out the lives of the magical beasts.
In the end, by the time he had put an end to the lives of every creature in the forest—Alba’s pristine uniform was completely dyed in a deep red shade.
