Chapter 07: The Case of the Gals’ Boyfriends Who Totally Don’t Exist
Honestly, I just wanted to give up and head home.
But the guilt of making Hari cry kept me rooted in place, forcing myself to endure.
I tried to picture the personalities of the Four Boyfriends of the Five-Star Gals.
It felt like connecting random dots in the night sky—desperately trying to invent a constellation that simply wasn’t there.
With no real clues, no background, not even a half-decent hint, those “stars” were nothing more than scattered points, glowing in meaningless patterns.
“So then… what’s the one thing you like most about him?”
I changed tactics, hoping to crack the wall from a different angle.
“He’s always on my side.”
Even Hari—usually the most dignified of the four—wanted a boyfriend she could lean on.
“He vibes with me!”
Naturally, if her boyfriend couldn’t keep up with Hinawa’s boundless energy, he wouldn’t last a second.
“His kindness.”
Miyu’s answer was basically a repeat of before. No real progress there.
“He thinks fast.”
At least Platina’s reply had a little sharpness to it.
“…Come on, these hints are way too fragmented. Give me something more concrete—an actual story, not just vague words. Otherwise, this so-called contest of yours is never gonna have a winner.”
I gave them my honest impression.
They were way too tough to pin down, and none of their answers carried any weight.
If they’d really dragged me into some kind of boyfriend showdown, I figured each of them would be dying to insist, “My guy’s the best!”
But not one of them gave off that vibe.
In fact, whenever I asked a question, some of them looked like they were desperately scrambling to make something up on the spot.
And yet, when they heard each other’s flimsy answers, they still reacted like it was somehow entertaining.
“Of course it’s hard. Trying to explain someone you’ve never met is like walking on thin ice.”
Hari chose her words carefully, as if every syllable might crack the surface.
“Exactly! Stuff like this, you just gotta pick up on the vibes☆”
Hinawa, as usual, was pure instinct—logic not included.
“Girls always go for someone prince-like. That’s just hard for guys to get.”
Miyu’s voice drifted as dreamily as ever, her words floating somewhere far from reality.
“Once you start dating, they’re all pretty much the same anyway.”
Platina, meanwhile, didn’t even bother to hide her lack of interest in romance to begin with.
After hearing all four, I couldn’t hold back the question that had been gnawing at me.
“…Do you four actually even have boyfriends?”
Because no matter how I looked at it, none of them seemed truly head-over-heels.
There was no giddy excitement, no lovestruck glow, none of that “I’m so happy I can’t think straight” mood people in love always carried.
““““────””””
At my words, the Four Five-Star Gals all sucked in a sharp breath at the exact same time.
“No, wait—I might’ve said something rude again. You girls stand out a lot, so maybe you’ve got your own reasons for not talking about boyfriends. I’m not that close to you anyway, so I should probably stop prying into your privacy.”
I quickly corrected myself, trying to sound as gentlemanly as possible.
Curiosity had pushed me too far—it was only natural to want to dig deeper once the conversation started rolling.
“But really, isn’t romance just about enjoying it between two people? If you get into the habit of comparing and ranking, you might lose sight of what actually matters.”
I offered my personal take.
Love was different for everyone—there was no absolute right or wrong.
“Kizuki, that’s actually a really good point.”
“Any girl who gets to be Ikoi’s girlfriend would be lucky.”
“Yeah, yeah. I totally agree.”
“You’re unbelievably straightforward for this day and age.”
The four of them reacted like my words had really struck home.
The legendary Five-Star Gals—and yet their responses felt almost innocent, like girls who had never even dated before.
No objections. No counterarguments. Just genuine awe.
“So then, how about we just call it a draw for today and wrap this up?”
I seized the moment and declared the contest over.
They traded quick glances before nodding in agreement.
And before I could even reach for the plates, the four of them had already polished off nearly all the food that had just been brought out.
“Ikoi, that was a perfect call! I knew it was the right move to leave it all to you☆”
Hinawa smacked me on the back like she was showering me with praise.
“As long as you’re satisfied, then I’m glad.”
With my role safely wrapped up, I finally asked the one thing that had been bugging me.
“Mind if I toss in a personal question before we end?”
“What is it?”
“There’s four of you… so why are you called the Fives?”
I honestly had no idea why they were labeled the Five-Star Gals.
There were only four of them.
From the very beginning, I’d always wondered where that missing “fifth star” was supposed to come from.
