Chapter 30: Encounter
“It’s really you, Onii-chan!”
Saying that, An ran toward me while holding her shopping bag.
“I was just about to start making dinner, so wait a bit—”
Just as she began to speak, An’s gaze shifted to Shirayuri-senpai, who stood next to me.
“…Huh?”
She let out a confused sound and stopped mid-sentence. Then, glancing up and down at Shirayuri-senpai, she murmured:
“Smooth hair, a beautiful face, a slender body with a large breasts, long, slim legs, and incredibly pale skin… Wait, what?!”
Muttering something under her breath, An turned her eyes back to me and said:
“Could it be… Is this woman your girlfriend, Onii-chan?!”
“Wha—!?”
I couldn’t help but let out a startled cry at An’s sudden question.
Meanwhile, Shirayuri-senpai placed her hand on her face and, wearing a blissful expression, began murmuring:
“Even though I understand that someone like me being in a relationship with Ritsu-san would be unfitting, could it be that, to those around us, we appear to be a couple… Me and Ritsu-san, in a relationship—”
“Sh-Shirayuri-senpai…? Are you okay…?”
“Shirayuri?”
Puzzled by her reaction, I questioned her. At the same time, An tilted her head and muttered something to herself. Shirayuri-senpai then snapped out of it, removed her hand from her face, and spoke with her usual gentle smile:
“It’s nothing. More importantly… Since you call Ritsu-san ‘Onii-chan,’ does that mean you must be his sister?”
To this question from Shirayuri-senpai, I nodded and replied:
“Yes, this is my sister, Sorakaze An.”
“I see, as I thought,” she responded.
Shirayuri-senpai, looking convinced, shortened the distance between herself and An, speaking in her usual kind tone:
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, An-san. My name is Shirayuri Junkoi.”
“Shirayuri Junkoi…? Wait, you mean that Shirayuri Junkoi, the daughter of the famous Shirayuri Group, and a third-year student?!”
An, who attended the same high school as us but was only a first-year and had only been in school until May, naturally hadn’t met Shirayuri-senpai, a third-year. However, it seemed she had heard of her name and was clearly very surprised.
“Yes, I am. I’m glad you’ve heard of me.”
“Of course, I’ve heard of you… But, wait—does that mean you’re really my brother’s girlfriend?!”
Ah, I forgot to clear up that misunderstanding! Remembering the urgent need to correct it, I immediately opened my mouth to speak:
“I’ve said this before—I don’t have a girlfriend! And even if I did, someone as amazing as Shirayuri-senpai wouldn’t be my girlfriend!”
“…?”
Hearing my words, Shirayuri-senpai let out a small, unclear sound. I didn’t know why, but before I could dwell on it, An stepped closer to me and said:
“You can’t be sure about that! Spending time together on a day off makes you look plenty like a couple. Plus, does that mean you went out with Shirayuri-senpai today? And on top of that, she gave you a ride home in that super fancy car parked behind you?!”
“Th-That’s true, but…”
When laid out like that, it did seem reasonable to mistake us for a couple. However, it wasn’t true, so for Shirayuri-senpai’s sake, I needed to dispel this misunderstanding.
“Shirayuri-senpai, could you also—”
To clear up An’s misconception, I turned to Shirayuri-senpai for help…
“Ritsu-san… What do you mean by saying it’s impossible for me to be your girlfriend?”
“…Huh?”
To my surprise, Shirayuri-senpai lowered her gaze, her tone growing darker as she asked me this.
Confused by her unexpected reaction, I froze, only for An to step closer to me with a similarly darkened expression.
“Hey, Onii-chan. What’s this about? Have you been lying to me all along about not having a girlfriend?”
As if in sync, Shirayuri-senpai also stepped closer and added:
“Is it that someone like me is not good enough to be Ritsu-san’s girlfriend?”
Just moments ago, we’d been having such a fun time… And yet, in the blink of an eye, I found myself cornered in a crisis.

Chapter 31: Misunderstanding
The situation escalated so suddenly that, honestly, I couldn’t fully grasp what was happening.
For now, I needed to clear up the misunderstanding between An and Shirayuri-senpai.
With that thought, I turned to An and started speaking.
“An. I’ve said this before, but I don’t have a girlfriend.”
“But you went out together and even came back in the same car. That’s—”
“As you probably know, Shirayuri-senpai is the daughter of the Shirayuri family who owned the Shirayuri Group.”
After this preamble, I continued.
“For us, giving a ride to someone of the opposite sex might make us think of certain implications… but—”
“…Are you saying it’s normal for Shirayuri-san?”
An asked, and I nodded in response.
“Yes. In fact, she seemed concerned that I might get tired walking home.”
It seemed that part of her intention was also to spend more time with me.
But it was clear that Shirayuri-senpai didn’t want to cause me any undue fatigue.
That’s something I must never forget.
“A kind senpai who worries about her junior getting tired from walking home and offers a car ride instead—that’s exactly the kind of person Shirayuri Junkoi-senpai is, the only daughter of the Shirayuri family.”
“…”
After a brief silence, An stopped looking downcast. She nodded, as if she understood, and spoke in a bright voice.
“So that’s how it was… Sorry, Onii-chan! I think I totally misunderstood!”
“It’s fine.”
Anyone would be shaken if they suddenly received news that the brother who insisted he didn’t have a girlfriend might actually have one.
“I see… So that’s how it was. That’s a relief…”
Watching An sigh in relief and mutter something under her breath, I judged that I had successfully explained things to her. I then turned to Shirayuri-senpai.
“…”
Unlike An, it wasn’t clear why Shirayuri-senpai seemed so upset.
For now, I decided to state the facts.
“Shirayuri-senpai. When I said earlier that someone as amazing as you couldn’t possibly be my girlfriend, I didn’t mean it in a bad way—”
“What I want to ask is not that!”
“Huh…?”
Raising her voice unusually, Shirayuri-senpai took a step closer to me. Then, she continued.
“Ritsu-san, you said that I’m an amazing person. And because of that, I couldn’t possibly be your girlfriend.”
Placing her hand on her chest, she spoke with an expression of distress I had never seen before.
“Ritsu-san, did you call me an amazing person because I’m part of the Shirayuri family? And by saying someone as amazing as me couldn’t be your girlfriend, do you mean that, as long as I bear the Shirayuri name, you don’t want me as your girlfriend—or worse, you don’t even want to associate with me?”
“What!?”
The conversation had spiraled so wildly out of control that I couldn’t help but let out a voice of surprise.
But I had something I could say with absolute certainty right now, so I quickly spoke up.
“That’s not it! I’ve never once thought about not wanting to associate with you, Shirayuri-senpai!”
“But… you said I’m too amazing to be your girlfriend—”
“It’s true that I said you’re an amazing person because you’re part of the Shirayuri Group, but—”
I continued, making sure to clarify.
“More importantly, the reason I think you’re amazing is because of the academic and athletic skills you’ve worked hard to achieve, the fact that you’re so humble despite being at the top, and your kindness. Those are the reasons I admire you. So, your family background has absolutely nothing to do with whether I want to associate with you!”
“…Ritsu-san…”
Wanting to clear up this misunderstanding no matter what, I spoke firmly. Shirayuri-senpai’s eyes widened for a moment before she stopped looking upset. Then, with an apologetic expression, she spoke.
“…I’m sorry. It seems I misunderstood a little.”
“No, I should apologize too for saying something that caused confusion.”
“There’s no need for you to apologize, Ritsu-san.”
Saying this, Shirayuri-senpai smiled at me as usual.
And with that, I somehow managed to resolve the misunderstandings between the two of them.
—But this was only the beginning, the start of touching upon the depths of their heavy love.
—And at this moment, I had no idea that later today, I would face yet another glimpse of that heavy love.
