Chapter 28: I’m Here for You
“…Shirayuri-senpai? Is something wrong?”
When I called out to the suddenly silent Shirayuri-senpai, she replied in a somewhat subdued voice.
“Hinase-san… Is that referring to Akari Hinase?”
“Yes, that’s right.”
Since it was true, I nodded and answered. After a brief pause, Shirayuri-senpai spoke again.
“I had heard, like rumors carried by the wind, that you two often talk at school. But I didn’t expect your relationship to be close enough for you to go shopping for clothes together. That surprised me a little.”
“Oh, so that’s what this is about.”
Nowadays, it’s natural for people to see me talking with Hinase at school. But a year ago, when I first started interacting with her, it caused quite a stir. After all, she was a popular model with no signs of having male friends, and I was just an ordinary guy with nothing remarkable about me.
So, it wasn’t strange for Shirayuri-senpai, who normally wouldn’t visit the lower-class classrooms, to know about our relationship. And it wasn’t surprising that she’d be shocked to hear we’d gone shopping together.
As I convinced myself of this—
“Are you two… dating, by any chance?”
“…What?”
Out of nowhere, Shirayuri-senpai dropped that question.
Caught off guard, I could only let out a confused sound. But soon, I processed her words and hurriedly replied.
“N-no, no! We’re not in that kind of relationship at all!”
“Really…?”
“Of course, really! We’re just plain old friends, nothing more!”
Since it was the truth, I stated it firmly. Hearing that, Shirayuri-senpai stopped looking so downcast and let out a sigh of relief.
“I see.”
Then, she added, “I apologize for asking something so out of the blue,” but I quickly assured her it wasn’t something she needed to apologize for. After that, she muttered something under her breath, too quietly for me to hear.
“If my feelings are realized and I could date Ritsu-san… Would I be allowed to do things with him that he doesn’t do with other women…?”
Then, after a short silence, she spoke to me again.
“…Ritsu-san, have you ever wanted to date someone?”
“That is… I’m not sure.”
It was a question about whether I’d ever wanted to be in a relationship. Most people would have a clear “yes” or “no” answer. Even if they chose otherwise, it’d likely just be an excuse to avoid answering directly.
But for me, it wasn’t like that.
I truly didn’t know.
I lowered my gaze and explained my reasoning.
“I’ve always been so focused on working hard to make ends meet… If I ever had feelings like that, they probably got buried by a sense of urgency telling me I didn’t have the time for them.”
“Ah…”
“But even so, I don’t resent my circumstances or regret anything. I’m thankful that kind people like you, Shirayuri-senpai, are in my life. That’s more than enough for me.”
I wasn’t just putting on a brave face; I genuinely felt this way.
Around me, there were people like Shirayuri-senpai, Ann, Hinase, and Hiiragi—truly kind individuals.
And just that was—
“Oh, sorry! I didn’t mean to bring up such a heavy topic out of nowhere—”
I apologized as I raised my head, but then I noticed something odd.
Shirayuri-senpai, who had been sitting right in front of me, was no longer there.
Confused, I sat frozen for a moment—until I heard her gentle voice behind me.
“Ritsu-san… You’ve worked so hard all by yourself until now. But it’s okay now.”
Her kind words reached my ears just before she gently embraced me from behind.
“I’m here for you, Ritsu-san. So, as I’ve told you before, from now on, please rely on me for anything—whatever it may be, I will always do my best to fulfill your wishes.”
“Shirayuri-senpai…”
I didn’t want to rely on Shirayuri-senpai. I didn’t want to burden anyone else.
I should’ve quickly pushed her away and told her, “Don’t worry about me; I’m fine.”
But…
…How could I reject such kindness?
“…”
Though my feelings were conflicted, I decided to let myself be enveloped in Shirayuri-senpai’s warmth for now.
—I still didn’t realize that this kindness was a reflection of her deep love.
—But the day I’d come to understand it wasn’t far off.

Chapter 29: The Lady
After a while, Shirayuri-senpai and I left the donut shop and wandered around the department store.
While exploring, I noticed a certain shop and instinctively spoke up.
“Oh, these sweets… My little sister bought some for me before, and they were amazing!”
“Is that so? If they are Ritsu-san’s favorite, shall we purchase some?”
“Yeah… Since we’re here, let’s buy them.”
“Understood.”
Shirayuri-senpai continued, “Wait a moment, please,” as she pulled out her smartphone and said:
“I’ll make arrangements to acquire the company operating this shop right now.”
“What…!? A company!?”
“Yes. Since it’s your favorite, we can’t risk it going out of business. By integrating it into the Shirayuri Group, we’ll eliminate that risk entirely. Furthermore, I’ll instruct them to provide as many sweets as Ritsu-san desires in the future—”
“Please stop!”
After much effort, I managed to convince Shirayuri-senpai, who had come up with such an outrageous plan, to simply buy the sweets.
We purchased the sweets and ate them together. As usual, Shirayuri-senpai refused to let me pay, so I gratefully allowed her to cover the cost.
This pattern continued throughout the day as we spent time together in the city. There were many twists and turns, but each time, I taught Shirayuri-senpai some common sense, preventing her from doing anything overly unconventional.
Eventually—
“The sun is starting to set, so let’s call it a day,” I said in the evening.
After a brief pause, Shirayuri-senpai nodded and replied, “Yes… It’s a bit disappointing, but let’s end it here for today.”
She then took out her smartphone.
“Allow me to arrange transportation to take you home, Ritsu-san.”
“Wha—!? T-Transportation!?”
“Yes… This way, I can reduce even a little of your fatigue—”
She stopped mid-sentence and continued, “No, of course, reducing your fatigue is important, but… I also wish to stay by your side for as long as possible.”
“…!”
Hearing the word “transportation” felt like a big deal to me, but if her intentions were simply to spend more time with me—
“…Alright. Please go ahead.”
“Thank you very much.”
When I agreed, Shirayuri-senpai smiled warmly.
Soon after, she made a call, and before long—
“Wha—!?”
A black limousine stopped in front of us, and the door opened automatically.
“Please, step inside, Ritsu-san.”
“O-Okay.”
Encouraged by Shirayuri-senpai, I nervously climbed into the limousine. Inside, it was like stepping into an actual room, complete with sofa-like seats and even a small refrigerator.
“Here, Ritsu-san,” she said, handing me a monitor displaying a map.
“What… What is this?” I asked.
“It’s a navigation monitor. Simply tap your home on the map, and the driver will take you there.”
“I-I see… Thank you.”
Even the texture of the monitor felt absurdly luxurious. I tapped my home on the map, and though the car made almost no noise, a slight jolt indicated that it had started moving.
“Now, we just wait to arrive. Let’s chat in the meantime,” she suggested.
“O-Okay.”
Despite my nerves, we talked as the limousine moved. After some time, Shirayuri-senpai paused before speaking.
“Ritsu-san… I think I caused you a lot of trouble today. Yet, you stayed with me until the end. Thank you so much.”
“N-Not at all! I never felt troubled, so please don’t worry about it. Actually, I had a great time spending the day with you. And thank you for everything, including the expenses.”
When I expressed my gratitude properly, Shirayuri-senpai smiled softly.
“Ritsu-san, you’re so kind… I’m still inexperienced, but if it’s alright with you, may I spend time with you like this again?”
“Of course. If you ever have any questions, feel free to ask me anytime.”
“…! Thank you so much, Ritsu-san.”
As we exchanged these words, the limousine stopped, and the door opened automatically.
Shirayuri-senpai and I stepped out of the limousine together.
“Well then, Ritsu-san. Let’s meet again on the school rooftop.”
“Yes, Shirayuri-senpai. Thank you for today—”
Just as I was about to finish,
“Huh? Onii-chan!?”
“…Huh?”
I heard a familiar voice I had grown accustomed to hearing every day. When I turned toward the voice—
There stood An, holding a shopping bag.
